Surely if you believe what it says in a physics textbook, you can understand why people believe what is written in the Bible?

completly different things, the bible explains things that happen in life, whilst physics normally comes aobut as a way of explaining things

ive put it badly there, but they work in different orders, and physics doesnt stop anyone, well all those formulas dont, and physics can be bent one way or another anyway

and that guy, he SAID he wouldnt let his own personal beliefs get in the way of his job which is to prevent discrimination, he probably believes its gods job to judge, not us for thing slike homosexcuality so let it happen

I don't totally get your point.
I wasn't comparing physics to Christianity. I was just saying that you have to be taught something to believe in it and trust it. If you believe something then someone telling you that they don't will not alter your belief. I probably wouldn't be able to persuade you that the theory of relativity is nonsense, and likewise you wouldn't be able to persuade a Christian that Jesus didn't exist, or didn't say he was the son of God etc.

Put a colon after silly and I'd agree with you.
Oh so you would agree with me if there was a colon in the text?

    You're weird

So anyway. Why don't you prove to me that Santa doesn't exist and while your at it prove to me that the earth is not flat and that tooth faries do not exist.

    Sheesh :crazyeyes

Surely it would be up to you to prove that they do?

Well I can see exactly where eternalsunshine is going. And he has a point.

If he says he knows Santa or the Tooh Fairy and thus that they exist, I don't think a Christian (or Jew, or Muslim, etc) could object much...

I seem to recall saying: Fair enough. I don't.

If (s)he has a point, I wish (s)he would make it.

You're assuming I've be a christian my whole life. I havn't. It is not by chance but by purpose.

If someone has experience of a living God working in their life, surely you can accept that as evidence that God exists.

Oh come on, I know you're not really this stupid, so why pretend to be?
Physics is based on hypotheses and repeatable experiments to test those hypotheses. So knowledge can be tested.
    Religion is not the same.

Most people are actually born into religions I think you'll find. If it doesn't come from your family, it comes from the culture around you.
What makes you so sure you are right? And that everyone else is wrong?
They don't contradict each other anyway - at their core, all religions pretty much say the same things.
You're getting bogged down in windown dressing.

Yes, that goes for you too - just because I challenge your beliefs, there's no need to get so uppity about it. You're not right either.

If someone believes in God, they must have some basis for the belief.

It's one thing to question, it's another to deny someone else's experiences as entirely false.

And what I'm trying to get you to consider is that there is a far more sophisticated approach than believing in the literal truth of the Bible - as I showed before, most sophisticated religous thinkers don't. They would tend more to my view.

Can't you see the difference? Physics WORKS, it can be demonstrated to work, it doesn't matter what your spiritual beliefs are, it WORKS. Your CD player, TV, etc are proof of this.

It is a product of the culture around you. If the culture around you was primarily Muslim, that is what you would be.
And you know it, no matter how much you protest that you don't.

What is it with religion that turns otherwise bright, intelligent and enquiring people into gullible idiots?

I think Marx had it right when he said

Religion is the opium of the masses.
