Updates to Thursday Support Circle & Introducing Themed Chats! 🌟
We wanted to update you all about some changes we'll be making to our Thursday Support Circle sessions. As you know, this project was funded by The Green House and we've been able to deliver an amazing 42 sessions over the past year. Your feedback on how helpful these sessions have been for you was so lovely to hear.
The project is now sadly coming to a close. However, we've seen how valuable these sessions are and so we’re really keen to find a way to continue them and also introduce some new support groups.
Your feedback
We want to thank you all for taking the time to share your feedback with us on how support groups can become busy at times and this means that it can be tough to get support on certain topics.
We've been listening to the feedback that you've shared here on the discussion boards, in the support groups, through feedback forms, and our annual survey which we share each year to help us improve our services here at The Mix.
This really helped show how valuable the support groups are and where we need to make improvements, so we’re really excited to be able to open up more focused spaces of support.
Themed Chats
Excitingly, we’re planning to introduce themed chat sessions each Thursday, centred around a set topic each week.
We will still run our existing Support Circle for survivors of sexual violence (likely to be monthly) but we will rotate the theme of the support group each week to also cover support for topics such as 'exam support', 'anxiety', 'school', 'relationships', 'bereavement', and more.
We hope this gives you more choice in accessing support and will create an even wider support network, helping more young people find a safe space to reach out.
We would love to get you all involved in shaping this new support group and choosing the themes of our chats. What kinds of topics would you like to see covered? Let us know below!
---
Our Thursday Support Circle sessions will be paused during our support group break (27th May - 9th June) to allow the team the chance to plan for their re-launch within our new themed chat structure following the break.

Re: Having a parent who hoards
Hi @AnonymousToe this all sounds very stressful and it takes a lot of courage to reach out. Do you mind explaining what exactly has gone on so we can best support you- only if you feel comfortable sharing though. I just want to clarify with you that you are safe

Re: About itvx n britbox
Hi @ellie2000 I had a quick Google for you and apparently, the Britbox app is not longer available after April 2024. However, you are still able to watch it if you have an ITVX Premium Subscription- hope this helps

Re: has anyone read this book and knows the title?
Sounds like a book I read called Skellig. I don’t think I finished it because it was a school thing and I left but I enjoyed the bit I did read. Did you like it?
Re: Having a parent who hoards
I’ve been following along with this thread and hope you’re okay.
I just wanted to share the Facebook page called “children of hoarders”
I’ve had a read through of what they share and their quotes like “safe parents don’t bury their children alive” - think meaning with objects ect. And like safe parents should care more about their child than objects and it validated things for me. I don’t know even just the fact they call it abuse cause my mum would gaslight me into thinking it’s not or would blame me. And reading the stuff on their helped me. I’ll share some of the stuff that was insightful to me some how and maybe help you
And remember you do deserve better. 🫶🏻

Re: Shaken up in class
@Anonymous55
I am sorry to hear that you are going through this at school. School should always be a place where you feel safe and not frightened. I can relate to having had stuff chucked at me when I used to go to school and it is a horrible feeling.
You mention you have a 5 minute pass from classes. If you don't mind me asking, was this the teachers attempt to lessen your contact with the people chucking things at you in class?
When you get stuff chucked at you, does the teacher see this stuff happening? Or is it happening when there is no teacher present?
It is true that often keeping to yourself and not reacting to them chucking stuff at you can reduce it happening because the people get bored of not receiving a reaction. However, I would say if this has been going on for so long by the same people, it is a form of bullying.
I notice you have mentioned quite a few times about how frightened and terrified you feel. Do you perhaps have a teacher you get on well with, guidance, or a teaching assistant who you could speak to about this at school? I understand that you may be feared of them asking for names of who is doing this. So you could explain why you are not wanting to name names but make the teacher more alert and aware of keeping their eyes out on it happening within the classroom.
There is also the option of getting in touch with Childline:
https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/school-college-and-work/
This page directly leads you to information about getting support to do with school. Childline are trained counsellor professionals who are trained to support you and talk you through the options you could explore and also take your feelings into account. This could be a very helpful resource to use if you are not confident talking to any members of staff at your school.
Another option is do you have any family members you feel comfortable to talk to about how you are feeling at school?
I hope this helps.

Re: Psychology students
Hello @lunarcat522 I agree with @Diddy456
Google scholar was the most helpful tool to use for finding journals and books for essays and other assignments. Was a great way to find resources that were more unique to use for assignments too which often results in a better mark. Also make use of the filter options where you can filter the search results to be publications within the last so many years. Using more recent and up-to-date articles results in a better mark too!

Re: 🟩 Support Group Break (May 27 - 9 June)
Great question @Dancer. I added something into the spoiler which you might not have seen yet to explain why this one is a bit earlier which I'll copy here too

We're going to be scheduling in our next one sooner than expected as a lot of our volunteers are going through exams at the moment and we've noticed we've had to close quite a few sessions recently. We'll use this time to recruit some new volunteers so we're ready to open chats again with a more consistent service
