Bit like when you get a doctor who is overweight and smokes?

Most doctors I know don't like having to do the whole CAGE/alcohol and smoking 'advice'. They still have to do it (don't know how much benefit it actually has as people don't like being told what's good for them, and as House says, "People Lie") but it's secondary to what is presented in terms of symptoms or disease, unlike Slimming World where the primary aim is to act as support and advise those who want to lose weight.

Fair enough - not sure it's actually good that it's private companies in general providing that kind of support as opposed to it being done through the NHS, but I can understand the difference. And I wouldn't exactly want to see the results (on queues or patients) if GP's were suddenly providing emotional support :)

I have problems with places like Slimming world and Weight watchers anyway in general as they don't teach people to be critical enough with food or what's going into it. Sure, they tell you to swap something for something else that's fat-free, but they fail to mention that fat-free often means it is compensated with a lot of sugar or something artificial. Or that you can stick with white pasta when in fact wholemeal is better and easier to digest.
And I wouldn't exactly want to see the results (on queues or patients) if GP's were suddenly providing emotional support

Well, a lot of GPs do do that, some people just want to come to see their GP for some company or a chat, but in the current climate, it's very difficult to provide a more holistic approach, for instance, like in A&E where you have to fulfil your time targets otherwise you lose money.

Do you think that fat people are treated differently from any other physical feature, or are you just singling it out because that's the one you have most experience with? Why is it acceptable to take the piss out of skinny people, short people, bald men, young looking people, old looking people, people with glasses, people with cellulite, people with sticky out ears, people with sticky out teeth, people with ginger hair, people with different voices, people with spots, people with freckles, people with a large forehead, I could go on? Smoking is treated differently, because it's an activity, and so is treated differently. But everything else I've mentioned is the same, and many have the same sorts of stigma of being fat. Spotty people don't wash, skinny people don't eat enough, etc.

I'm a bit astonished that you genuinly seem to have missed this social phenomena. I can tell you're not fat but you don't have any fat relatives or friends either? never noticed the revulsion to fat, the new shocking tantilising healdline word - it's worse for a celebrity to get fat than it is to shove powder up their nose? Seriously, the word 'fat' has this vast, horric set of negative values attached to it that have notihing to do with the actual substance of fat. If I want to call someone a cutting insult, I know that calling them a fat twat it going to hurt much more than a fucking cunt because 'fat' is this nasty word with all the aforementioned connotations. I can't see how you can compare this society's demonisation of fat with being short or spotty.

That's like saying "Ask a Scottish person how to play bagpipes". I mean we'll show you, but we won't be very happy about it.

A lot of the food we cook does, always used it a lot in our cooking at home.

Also if MSG is so bad then why doesn't the whole population of Japan keeled over yet as they eat shedloads of the stuff.

Seeing how people have been upset by this topic, I guess I'm really lucky to have missed out on all this negative stuff. I guess that's to do with coming from a world where 17-24 stone is sexy on a man.

I haven't missed out on this "phenomena" at all, I just think that it's no worse than what a lot of other people have to deal with, the only difference is it's more widespread because more people are fat (by a long way) than have any of the other physical features I mentioned.

Not really hugely in to men (though I have and am open to date them again)... But to be honest, I don't really have an issue with these men at all. They don't freak me out or anything.

I think some bigger women are lush, depending on what you call big. To be honest I've been called 'fat' (not that I care, fuck you if you don't like my body size because I'm comfy with it) and I'm hardly gigantic. I love curves on a woman, they can be very sexy and of course something to cuddle. I guess being quite rough and tumble anyway, I'm scared I'd snap somebody very petit.

Still, nobody is doing it for me at the moment as much as Tracy Chapman.

    LOL

    Random.

Exactly. Cultural norms, and all that. There's no need to apologise for your weakness.

I wouldn't call it a weakness, different people find different things attractive. Obesity isn't typically attractive. It doesn't make you 'weak' because you're not in the minority who do find severe obesity attractive. That doesn't mean you can't be attracted to someone of that build, just that on appearances you're not going to be instantly attracted to them. Personality takes precedent in almost all cases.

Yeah but she looks quite happy with herself, and tbh its not up to her to conform to whatever you find attractive or not. Im sure youve never even met the woman. Shes not my cup of tea either, but im not everyone and there will be plenty of people out there that either find her attractive or wont find her especially unnattractive. One of my best friends husband has a very definite thing for big girls. Not that its the point.
