Sounds like you are contradicting yourself there.
Careful that you don't go confusing religion and politics.
Political tyrants have always used torture to cement power, lets not pretend that its the domain of the Church.
I an't think of many people in a congregation who go off torturing and killing.

I an't think of many people in a congregation who go off torturing and killing. [/QUOTE] Not any more, though only a few hundred years ago (and in some nations, still today) the congregation would be calling for the poor heretic/blasphemous/demonic person in question to be burnt at the stake or stoned to death without delay. Or they would be doing it themselves.
But no, I was referring to organised religion and the evil influence it has had on mankind for millenia, as opposed to individual worshippers themselves.
And religion has done some good things as well, the drive to end slavery and child labour were primarily driven by people who believed it was their Christian Duty. Plenty of charities today have religious roots.
Mostly, yes. I do lose my rag over fools and bigots, but mostly I'm tolerant and informed, yes.
Except this is to misunderstand what science is. Science does not ever claim to be "correct". What it does do however, is to look at phenomena, evidence, form hypotheses and accept or reject these based on the evidence. Religion claims to be correct based on wild conjecture, science is constantly self-examining and changing. Of course, this completely ignores any of the politics involved, but its the basis of it.
So, based on a few people in your town, you'll make sweeping statements about "liberals" in general. Hmmm...
I was looking for a way to say what you've just said Blagsta, now i don't need to, that sums up my views perfectly.
believing blindly in anything is dumb.... people are like that though
scientific and logical thinking is another ball game all together i know plenty of religious people doing science degree as its about the methods staying constant not the end results
what gave you a device that cools things down, and calculating the efficiency of a steam engine etc etc
science is nothing in itself apart from a way of thinking and using the construct of mathematics to further our understnading of the physical world
Some people ignore the teachings of their own religion to suit current social trend, but that doesn't mean you can't say Western religion isn't opposed to homosexuality, because it most obviously is.
What political ideology did Stalin produce? Stalin didn't produce any political ideology - he twisted it. You really must get to grips with distinguishing proper socialism from soviet communism.
modern science is desperatley trying to hold on to a nineteenth century theory of evolution when modern science itself is coming more and more to the conclusion there is inteligent design in the building and programming of living cells.
bible ...first to state the world was a globe hanging on nothing.
medical and hygiene advice that most 'atheists' ignored for a few thousand years until their science cuaght up.
advance warning that we would kill a third of all life in the oceans ...news papers published the same tale 2000 yrs later ...
most of you know diddly shit about religous books and their teachings.
Did the Church (the RC Church only recently changed its official position i believe) not support the theories of a flat Earth? Obviously the Church may not follow the actual bible 100%...
You know any url's to sites which look at biblical accuracy at all?
archeology is a good place though.
cities and kings mentioned only in the bible and thought of for centuries as myth ...have many times been dug up with ...the names of those kings and their exploits carved in stone ...matching bible writtings.
to the point even ...of many archeologists using the bible as a guide ...
understand even less.
their leader jesus ...who they are supposed to emulate trashed a church/temple ...cos he was disgusted and angry in the materialistic and money making attitudes ...the catholic church is one of the most fabulously wealthy organisations on the planet ...maybe THE wealthiest.
their jesus had run ins with the religous leaders ...he hung out with prostitutes and thieves ...he called those religous people ...accused them even ...of being hypocrites ...snakes ...sons of satan.
if he's alive and well ...i don't think his views will have changed were he to examine the lives of bishops ...eveyone of them living in a palace with servants ...fluanting themselves with the military and political leaders.
but ...the blind christian ignores these stories.
I'm just pointing out that differing people have ideas of what's moral and what isn't and using them as an example.
I'm not sure I made any comment about whether Stalin's regime was or was not proper communism or said that he produced an ideology. For the record I think that the USSR is more properly described as State Capitalist than Communism as defined by Marx. However however you describe its ideology it was officially atheist and killed millions.
Also you say that it was twisted from proper socialism - which may be true. It may also be true that the Spanish Inquisition is twisted from proper Christianity.
a real scientist would would admit that darwinian evolution doesnt cover the whole picture, however religion itself does not attempt to explain things instead it latches onto current scientific belief then fills the gap with its crap, when real science involves actually trying to explain and REASON and model the things we dont understand
real scientific methods admit flaws but try to study them instead of just saying "oh its this"
what are you on now all the things you mentioned havent been proved or even explain things work, a real scientist would not say "oh we dont know lets give up and put it onto a higher being" - science itself is an attempt to explain things in the ways of the world we know
the theory of relativity almost perfectly explains the gaps in mercurys obrit that newtons rules dont work on
quantum mechanics explains almost all of the chemistry we sort of understand and use to make almost every drug, and compund we use, theres gaps still, admitted, however we dont know it all yet, and its a continual process, but we know more and can explain with a mathematical model mroe things than we did hundred years ago, and they knew mroe than what they knew 500 years ago, get it?
Whether humans descend from apes hasn't been proven beyond reproach yet (just as it hasn't been proven that, say, the centre of Earth is not made of dark chocolate) but it still remains, by about 50 trillion times, the most plausable theory. Certainly more so than the story that the entire human race comes from a single couple. Something so absurd (and impossible) it is truly breathtaking some people still claim it happened.
So MR, while the Bible might contain the odd prediction that it turned to be right, it contains many more that were totally and undisputably, utter bollocks. Which should be alright with those Christians who agree that the Bible should be taking as a guide, not literally.
Good response.
Even better response.
Superlative response.
btw the Bible says the earth is flat.
Really? Can you point to any evidence for this?
Yes, using the example of a few kids in a small town. Pointing out that people have differing moralities is hardly earth shattering news.
im not a religious person at all, i dont have a faith as many people do in a god or such deity, but i do respect religion, and find it sometimes fascinating to study different aspects of various religions
but what does bother me is people who use religion as an excuse or reasoning to justify/do things which they wouldnt do/think of if they dint have their religion behind them
