So poverty and social deprivation don't contribute to alcohol abuse? Errr...yeah, right.

    This is worth a read

a very lengthy read, some other time.........so i suppose everyone at this uni is poor and socially deprived? you're talking bollocks......maybe it used to be a contributing factor, now it is anywhere and everywhere.............tell me do you interact frequently with the youth of today, and i don't mean at work i mean socially?..........

You've got a real knack for missing the point.

You're both right, to be fair.

I'm not sure what point apollo is trying to make. The one I'm making is that
    (a) young people like to socialise and have sex (so do old people to be fair)
    (b) excessive public drunkeness has been a problem for hundreds of years and is related to poverty and social problems.

And he's saying that alcohol abuse transcends the social strata. Which is true.

There is of course a link between social deprivation and alcoholism - the fact that they end up worse off could be the lack of access to adequate healthcare, and more generally poor health.

Sorry, I should qualify this. How much actual or perceived harm it causes is often related to poverty and social class (e.g. posh hooray Henry's getting drunk and misbehaving at Henley Regatta is seen as less of a social problem than working class lads getting pissed up in Croydon on a Friday night). How people cope with alcohol problems is also very much dependent on money and class.

your first point i agree with, at least.

the second, well dont get me started.......all i can say is poverty and social problems may well lead to alcoholism and rowdy behaviour, and in the past when living standards were lower in general this may have been the cause..........but now we are comfortable in the main, enough disposable income to waste on all the little luxuries...........alcohol abuse these days has little to do with poverty, cos all the students down the bar are wearing the latest trainers/ fashion accessories.......and the majority are middle class.

Most students aren't alcoholics, and most alcoholics aren't students.

Most problem drinkers do have less than ideal social circumstances. And it has everything to do with poverty when these people spend their entire income on booze and don't eat properly and become seriously malnourished.

Going out every night and getting drunk doesn't come close.

well that just means we have different definitions of abuse........i say they are abusing it, what's the point in being so drunk you can never remember half the evening and end up with some minger you regret? and this is a good night.......of course there are different levels of abuse, but that's a different debate.

Yeah, but they may not be alcoholics. They definitely do have a problem if they are doing that regularly though.

that's my point, this is actually viewed as a fun way to spend an evening.......young people can't socially interact normally anymore, without being completely hammered they feel awkward and don't know what to do with themselves.........so get as sloshed as you can, doesn't matter what happens or what you do, its FUN.

Your points about masculinity and feminitity etc (which is what got my goat in the first place) really aren't very useful at all in trying to understand alcohl abuse and social problems. Some historical awareness is needed as is an awareness of the economic and social reasons underlying problems in our society. This approach is sorely lacking in most of your posts.

Well I used to drink too much and at least try to shag around. But like most people I grew up - we get into long term relationships, cut down on our drinking, get responsible jobs, have kids.

Good to see things haven't changed since I was a teenager in the 80's then.

yes we did go way off track, i stick by my original post that those words are greatly misunderstood today..........the youth of today is a very confused individual, one expression of this is the drooling and lewd behaviour, that was my point and i don't believe it's normal.......

i know you're older blagsta and whatever but so are other posters on here, and they manage to come across hell of a lot less patronising than you...........and your last post makes you sound more like a juvenile and less like an adult, you really think it's good that teenagers are dysfunctional drunks and can't function normally?...........where does this lead society?......

i do think the playboy/playgirl lifestyle means people will find it harder to grow up, accept responsibility.........this is already evident in society, lol ever watched trisha? obviously not everyone's like this, but i do think it is gradually increasing.....only time will tell.

people have more money than they did 20 years ago - they spend it on leisure, including drinking. I don't think its the end of civilisation as we know it. Most of them grow up...
