Dirty Harry

So Prince Harry was involved in a scuffle with the press outside a nightclub last night.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3762200.stm

The age old debate about freedom of the press vs. right to privacy for public figures re-emerges. Was Harry right? Has it got a right to privacy? Should he be prosecuted for assault? Should the photographer have been given a good smack?

Opinions please. :D

From what I understand it wasn't a totally intentional assault, but I'd have smacked him one myself. Why is it that this 20yr old lad is expected to be perfect the whole time?

I don't even understand why we have this topic to be honest. I can't imagine anyone else here would have tackled the situation any better.
The last thing you want is people taking pictures of you once you're out of the club.

So here's the question: should royals be entitled privacy at any cost? Should it be made illegal for the press to photograph them without permission, or allow the police/bodyguards to prevent photographers from snapping royals by all legal means possible?

It's interesting how these photographers are all against privacy laws and the right to not be followed everywhere when they are the stalker, but when they are the stalked suddenly it's a terrible horrible thing.

Didn't Private Eye stalk one of the paparazzi photgraphers once, just to prove a point? If it was the Eye then it was something else, but I remember that the paparazzi's reaction was less thanm civilised and rational.

Paparazzi photgraphers are vermin of the highest order, and I will be cheering when every single one of the cunts is swinging from the gallows.

That is complete bollocks I'm afraid.

everyone is entitled to a private life and freedom from stalking, unless it is in the public interest. Stalking Harry into a nightclub is not in the public interest, all it is is tabloid tittle-tattle that Murdoch and the rest of them thrive on.

That photgrapher should have been dealt with by harry's bodyguards, in the most appropriate way. Of course, it is terrible of me to say that the most appropriate way is, of course, by kicking the turd up and down a flight of stairs for several hours.

Personally i feel sorry for him, it is not like he is going out asking for fame like many of the popstars who thrive off it!

Give him a break, he wants to be a normal teenager whats wrong with that?

As far as i am concerned he did nothing wrong end of story!

Just as celebrities. At premieres the they're there for being photographed. At Royal events, they're there to be reported on. But when they're out having a laugh, out doing their shopping then what do I gain from seeing them pick their nose or whatever?

There shouldn't be made laws about it. It should be common respect.

Yes, I remember. That'd be Private Eye's 'favourite' paparazzi, Jason Fraser (I think that's the name anyway). By far the most repugnant little worm in a profession full of worms. He threatened to sue Private Eye for infringement of privacy or some bollocks like that because the magazine printed an official portrait photo of Fraser. Incredibly, and with apparently a completely straight face, the man who specialises in stalking people and taking photo-lens pictures of them as they sunbathe topless (shock horror!) sometimes in their own private property, was genuinely offended that Private Eye would print images of him without permission.

I agree with what you're saying Jacqs.

What is of public interest and what interests the public are two completely different things. Sadly the tabloids and gossip mags use the pretext of the former to provide for the latter.

But not than his brother. No-one really expects him to step into that position.

But as has been said so many times before, the masses are complete and total asses.

Fraser, that's the one. He was so humble at the Eye's treatment of him. Dickhead.

Isn't it perfectly obvious why Prince Harry would lose it against the paparazzi?

i think harry and to a lesser degree william have a hard time trying to live up to their mothers legend, but i also think the public have a right to know what the inbred germans are frittering their hard earned taxes on (apart from murdering foxes of course)

    Why?

Unless we start demanding that every student, and every JSA claimant, every public employee, has to do the same.

sorry for sounding so irate, it's just that i got wound up when the queen mother disclosed that she had a 4 million quid overdraft with coutts the royal bank, and the taxpayer had to pay it off. she was only the mother of the richest woman in the world, 4 official residences and a collection of old masters that would have made herman goering green with envy, but no, we had to pay for fucks sake.

what makes me laugh is when the royals pretend to join the armed forces, as harry is planning to do; they will never be put in danger. one of the favourite misconceptions of monarchists is that the queen mother stayed in london during the blitz, yeah; im sure she slept in the tube stations with everyone else, do me a favour!

And I didn't see any other "important" people down there either, for that matter.

I really will never understand all this grumbling about the monarchy- it's far preferable to the pissing contest one gets in the US every four years.

So he should be charged and prosecuted like any young guy.

He is famous, thats part of the job. Celebreties will always be photographed. He didnt need to lash out, he isnt stoopid, he should have had the maturity to quickly get in the car.....not lash out like a thug.

I think Andrew flew helicopters in the Falklands conflict. Not exactly safe. I have great respect for anyone who joins the army. Harry doesn't have to - he could do anything - but he's chosen to join the army. Good for him.

As for the royals in general, the queen mum would have got a lot worse press if she'd sold one of her 'official residences' to pay off her overdraft. The monarchy is a net benefit to the country, on tourism alone.

I agree, that is the rational thing to do when you have time to think about it. When someone's flashing a camera in your face and you're half pissed up at 3am, I think Harry's chosen method of dealing with the papparazzi would be my choice too.
