Perhaps the best way forward, with so many countries on America's side with this and support even coming from some unexpected directions, is to convene an international terrorist tribunal, like the war crimes one in the Hague, and catch Bin Laden and friends that way. Deal with this appalling situation with JUSTICE not VIOLENCE.

What is clear to me now is that we haven't evolved at all over the last 1000 years. Nothing has changed. Humans will always fight amongst each other because we are so blatantly territorial. No different from a pack of lions.

No, this is - as the Muslims say - a holy war, based on religion. The Islamic extremists see US foreign policy as detrimental to muslim states - support for israel, bombing libya, Iran, Gulf War etc - and they see this as an attack on their faith. The US doesn't understand this yet, they still believe that every one of their actions in the past has been to help the Middle East. These people don't WANT to be another part of the US, they don't want to be westernised and they want to have their OWN culture.
To defeat an enemy you first need to understand who they actually are, what motivates them and what their final aims are. Eliminate any and you win, but also you need the political will to go further than your enemy(Al Capone knew that one). The fanatics have attacked the symbol of money, which is what appears to motivate the US - what was the reason for the Gulf War again?
What they have actually achieved is to give the US the motive and political will to strike back hard...

The fact is that a US city was attacked by terrorists. Indications are that this act was carried out but islamic fundamentalists. The US, quite rightly, wants justice and to prevent this happening again. If that means that they bomb the shit out of a 'third world' country, then so be it. If Bin Laden (or A.N. Other) didn;t think he could defend himself, then he shouldn;t have ordered this action.

My thoughts are with you and your friend. A friend of mine has a boyfriend (fiance) who is also in the marines and has been posted. He left yesterday but its worse than that. She is pregnant and was due this weekend gone while he was with her on compassionate leave but the baby has not been born and so he will miss the birth...what if he never sees his child? She is putting on a brave face but i think she is crying inside...
