You don't think its worth commenting on the fact that 3 out of 4 current female housemates have false tits? Its a higher ratio that I remember from previous years. Personally I think it reflects popular culture - most of the women in lads mags have false tits.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

I don't disagree that the mags have a negative effect on some people, or that they are part of (and create) a popular culture which you also feel is negative. I just think that if you feel that moving a mag from one shelf to another or banning them entirely is going to make a blind bit of difference then you're sadly deluded. I also think you do a disservice to kids if you don’t treat them with the intelligence and perception that they so evidently have.

I also think that the people who believe that the grip these mediums have are all encompassing are wrong. You have big brother pumped through the idiot box at you because it is popular for a whole host of reasons. I think many people watch it because they can't believe the utterly bonkers people they are seeing. If you had me on a regular T.V. slot telling you how i chortled on the loo at the ridiculousness of a magazine, i'd wager many more people would agree with me but wouldn't watch me talking sense week in week out.

I think people are confusing the demise of culture with the fact that generally what you get force fed by the media is low brow bollocks. Just because you see more of it doesn’t mean it’s the norm.

It doesn't refelct anything other than the BB producer's opinions on who they think will make watchable telly. You could pick 10 absolute nutters from any cross section of any community or culture, regarless of media influence.

This is a rather naive statement. Why on earth do you think they pick the people they do? Its not just cos they're a bit nutty and entertaining. Its cos they fulfill certain cultural stereotypes - the bitchy queen, the miss Wales beauty, the porn star with pneumatic tits, the blonde etc etc.

Exactly, if they picked ten ordinary people it would be boring as fuck.

I don't think anyone has suggested it will make much difference. I certainly haven't. I do know though that my g/f would feel happier without seeing sexist shit in her face while queuing for a loaf of bread in Sainsburys. My friends with kids would also feel happier not having to explain to their kids why that woman has no clothes on.
I also think you do a disservice to kids if you don’t treat them with the intelligence and perception that they so evidently have.

I think you missed the point again.

I didn't say it was "all encompassing".

Channel 4 when it started had a remit of showing minority interest programs and arts.
Just because you see more of it doesn’t mean it’s the norm.

How do you define the norm? Who gets to define it? Using what criteria?

    Respectfully, bollocks!

You could culturally stereotype anyone put on the show.

My BB Profile: White, middle class, computer science nerd who is a product of the internet generation. My negative influences are Computers Weekly and PC Gamer. I could have been a regular, self-confident member of society if i hadn't been enticed by the alluring world of online quake and the internet's ability to hide my social inadequacies behind a catchy username. Currently on a crusade to make online gaming only available to over 18s who can confidently hold a conversation with a stranger.

You hardly fit into current media/celebrity/popular culture stereotypes. I'm on about the stereotypes such as the pretty in a dull tedious way blondes of Hollyoaks etc.

Nerds aren't a popular sterotype these days? Try walking a mile in my shoes!

Edit: God, that sounds self-pitying. I just want everyone to know i'm perfectly comfortable with my nerd status, if fact i embrace it!

Nerds have been a popular stereotype for ages - maybe you should give BB a go!

I've totally lost track of my point now. :grump:

I don't care if you're some tight lad who knows what the craic is with "life" and whatever, you're just a cunt all the same. So haha hadifuckinghaha!

I think people, yet again, forget that environment scuplts behaviour.

If you are consistently exposed to a media environment in which certain behaviours are deemed acceptable- such as using people as nothing more than a receptacle for orgasm- then those behaviours are normalised.

It isn't as simple as saying media creates behaviour, but if a person is exposed to something enough they become normalised to it, and they start to see it as acceptable.

Taking girls in nightclubs is a good example. No man would consider raping a woman to be acceptable, but many think its fine to grope women who are dressed sexily. After all, they're "gagging for it" if they dare to wear a revealing dress. If you don't believe that men do think this, go and look back at the last thread on the subject.

BB is also an interesting example. BB edits according to social stereotypes to make "good telly". The media portray this thing as fact, as reality, but it isn't anything more than what Endemol want you to think about people. ben Elton hit the nail right on the head in his satire of it.

I don't think lads mags are the root of all evil, but they normalise behaviours that I don't think are good for anyone. They upset women by holding them up to the same standards as a fridge or a pair of sunglasses, and they upset men by breeding dissatisfaction, especially in young men who simply don't have the experience to make their own mind up.

If it's nominally aimed at 18-24 year olds, you can guarantee that the people who actually buy it are the 14 year old boys who want to feel like grown ups. Actual grown ups wouldn't use it to wipe their arse on.

Some of the articles in mags such as GQ and Loaded are very good actually.

GQ especially tends to be quite good.

Lads mags are brainless entertainment, they cerainly aren't evil. They do normalise things that shouldn't really be normalised, especially the whole thing of treating sex as a consumer item.

One thing they are certainly not suitable for is for sale to minors. And not because of the nudity- you get that in The Sun.

Which must mean you have a problem with people having recreational sex. Bizarre.

where does it say 18-24? in all honesty i've been obsessed with breasts since i was a young one despite seeing no media stuff for it, very fruedian yes, but it is me - im not saying all guys are the same, some 18-24 guys like that crap some dont, i personally dislike zoo etc for being a waste of money, and i think the fashion sections of guys magazines are bollocks, but some of the sections i like

if i want something serious, i read a newspaper, if i want disturbing, unique or sexual images i read bizarre or a lads magazine

as the classic saying goes: young girls grow into women, young boys have a job for life
    that applies to me

some things go beyond whom they target anyway, viagra is for people with erectile dysfunction, there are people who use it despite having no problems :p

and more generally, the lady who introduced this bill is a nu labour arse kisser wanting to get herself a ministerial job - the bill is unworkable anyway as these 'lads mags' would just join regular wank material on the top shelf and become it, not forgetting that teen girl magazines are just the same, with semi naked guys and sex stories and silly things to me like make up and celeb gossip (which in my opinion is garbage, like some people see photos of shark bites are garbage ala zoo)

I have a problem with young men being told that if they don't sleep around then they are not as masculine as someone who does.

I have a problem with young women then being pressurised into doing this because if they don't they are frigid losers.

Don't try and pretend that that doesn't happen, because you damn well know it does.

And why is it "bizarre" to not think that recreational sex is a good thing that can only do wonders for the health of young people? I'm genuinely interested in how your brain jumps to such ridiculous conclusions.

But then, I'd expect no better from someone who finds it acceptable to grope people in clubs and holler abuse at them from car windows...

you dont have to believe it.... :thumb:

womens magazines are far worse in regards to suggesting their readers follow certain stereotypes

sometimes i find the guys magazines alright, sometimes i dont - personally have never liked those crappy weekly ones, refer loaded and fhm cause they dont just have orange big titted ladies but some really hot ones instead as well as some stff that its amusing to read

No, you don't have to believe it, but these things are deliberately targeted at people who are either young and impressionable (whatever anyone says, Zoo and Nuts are targeted at 14-year-old boys) or unsure fo their self-identity (just about any other adolescent).

I don't think lads mags are the only problem area of the media, but they are an important and successful section of the media and I think that they should be doing more for their readers than turning them into frustrated and unhappy consumers.

I admit I do buy some of these "lads mags" occasionally, and I really have no idea what for. I'm wasting my money. The only mildly amusing part of most of them is the letters pages. Half the women in them look completely artificial. Yep, I've wasted my money...
