I just wonder what everyones opinion is of this?
I mean many disagree that the jobs have been taken away from this country and that the techn ical support is thousands of miles away on the phone. I think its damaging for our country that the employement of 20,000 people is taken elsewhere and although it may be in the companies best interests do you think it's wrong of them to utilise that resource for next to nothing like that?
What do you think?

Fuckers.
secondly, this is damaging to Indias technological industry they have so painstakingly developed is it not? They have their own computer technology development industry to think about with out foreign companies moving in, it is just the first step to buying up what is there.
Welcome.. To Capitalism!
Of course they don't because the governments over there are using guns to stop it happening.
Welcome, to statism!
Why?
Because it usually takes about half an hour to establish who exactly they are what they're calling about before you can tell them to get to fuck.
A lot of these foreign telesales people can't do their jobs properly because of regional accents as well. Getting a pakistani with basic command of english to understand a dafty from glasgow just isn't going to happen.
Exactly!!
UK based or not.
Of course, if location is a source of any communication barrier, then it's the wrong location.
On the subject, the problem with a lot of these call centres is, well, the service suffers. You could end up speaking to someone whose grasp of English is, to put it mildly, a little shaky, they might not understand me when I talk either. That said, I sometimes struggle to understand people who talk in the Yorkshire accent and the Scots, so it's not a unique situation. Customer service from a lot of these companies leaves a lot to be desired, whether the call centre is in Calcutta or Croydon.
I understood subject13 to be saying that all telesales people should speak RP and not have a London, Brummie, scouse, Scottish etc accent. Surely you don't find British regional accents difficult?
Yeah providing jobs in a developing country to help them escape poverty.....
Damn them
Yes. Removing jobs from one country because they DARE to have a higher minimum wage, going abroad paying people shit-all... and probably buying up local industries so as to limit competition!
Oh, not to mention these call centre people often have little to no idea what they are talking about. Don't tell me you haven't have the fun of spending hours on an Indian call centre getting nowhere?
Don't be so naive
i agree, the last thing we need are more and more productive people in the world. Every time anyone makes something, a fairy dies. :nervous:
I honestly can't decide if you're naive, stupid, or both.
But anyway.
What commitment does Dell have to the UK? It's an American company, for starters.
I am not the one being naive.
Suggesting that global capitalism is evil because a private company is creating jobs in a developing country is what is naive.
Obviously things are more complicated than I made it but I simply felt the need to highlight one obvious good point of this move before the 'communists' on here start spouting drivel.
I was clearly too late..........
What was factually incorrect in that statement?
The thread is baout Dell moving jobs to India. India is a rather poor country. Thus the provision of these jobs will help may people get higher incomes and possibly for some, escape poverty.
Easier to make a glib statement though, rack up that post count eh?
Please... you can't HONESTLY think they do it out of the good of their hearts do you?
Its cheap slave labour, its logical, cold, and financial. Thats all there is to it - if someone else does it cheaper, they get the deal.
The reason for it is completely irrelevant, the result is all that matters.
Why is it slave labour?
Yes it is cheaper amd that is why they have located there, this is the logic of free markets that has led to development in other areas of the world and will lead so in India.
Do you concede that this is good for India or not?
If not, what is it that firms like dell should be doing to encourage development in the poorer areas of the world.......
What on earth are you wittering about now?
And people in India are queueing up to get jobs in these call centres - it may be cheaper for the company, but it also pays a damn sight more than most jobs in India and drives up the standard of living (not just for the employees, but for all the people who they in turn purchase goods and services from).
Have you suddenly become me? :chin:
And... they are still NOT being payed reasonably - and of course... the quality of the product decreases. I want to talk to someone who actually KNOWS what the blithering hell they are on about.
Anyone who has ever had to suffer using a call centre knows what I mean.
"Hello, I am having trouble connecting to the internet."
"Is the computer turned on?"
"Yes, It is. I have made sure the modem is plugged into the phone line and computer, checked the power, and checked it is dialing the correct number."
"Ok. Have you made sure the cables are connected?"
This is an actuall conversation I had with an Indian call centre chap working for AOL. I promtly changed ISP.
the quality of service goes down though from my experience
Totally Agree
They're paid very well for the place they live - which is why call centre's based there have no trouble recruiting workers.
Fantastic, you agree with me. That final sentence just prooves the benefits of capitalism. You don't like the product or service you shop somewhere else. AOL now either has to improve the quality of its service, become cheaper (so people are content for a poorer service) or it looses customer, profit and eventually goes bankrupt.
Yes, but I've found my current ISP - is just as bad. Luckily, they don't punt me off every half hour.
And indeed, it appears all companies are. It seems WHATEVER I call up about - I get some halfwit who barley understands me or the subject matter.
See, Capitalism... everyone will do it, because of it - as cheeply as possible whilst charging me - as much as possible - to increase profit. So all companies do the same - and we all get shit on.
Under socialism there's no incentive for 'companies' to provide any decent service or to innovate or to bother with their customers at all.
