No Aladdin, there isn't. You should see it more as an example of what issues are being focused upon in many areas of this country with the arrival of the election.

and besides two or three people from massively different locations is hardly a co-ordinated attack on a website with 10,000 plus users a day

No.. well, except maybe The For Her, but he's a good laugh if nought else.

If they were trolling, it would likley be BNP's seeing if anyone here will support them in the next election. And they'd go for it in a much larger way.

Edity: Just remembered though, ATS did get get attacked by a bunch of Facists a while ago... perhpas they want to take over the net?

can you oppose multi-cultralism and not be a racist?

Yes. A large minority of the left do - but not in the way you mean I suspect. The left should be putting a class analysis first and foremost before race, looking at what unites people rather than divides, while still acknowledging differences in culture. http://www.iwca.info/manifest/policy.htm#race

more like abusive connotations..........it's someone who posts utter rubbish on a regular basis, as far as i'm aware, without attempting to enter into intelligent debate, which is what p+d is for........constantly harping on about left wing for instance, when that is an overly simplistic analysis, and adds nothing to the discussion.

It's starting to look that way to me.

The number of new/newish/recently banned or suddenly active individuals who have suddenly started posting their rather "peculiar" views on various subjects is certainly well above what we average at any other time.

Or maybe I'm just paranoid and should lay off the joints for a bit eh?
Strange. I have thought the same recently. I kinda noticed it when we had the new layout but that could be coincidence.

How do you constitute a troll?
Cause as far as I understand a troll is someone whose views oppose yours.

Yes, they might not beleive what they are saying, but say it to provoke a reaction. Like walking into a gay bar wearing a cross, holding a bible and proclaiming homosexuality a sin.

Not it isn't - it often isn't used incorrectly but we've seen posters sign up to deliberately infect computers with viruses, post child porn, insult other members continually in every post.

Again, you don't see what gets deleted most of the time. It is a term used wrongly and regularly, often by to make an unfait point and often unfairly against new users but it is valid and correct in some circumstances.

Not sure you can troll a politics board... Surely one of the aims is to put politically contenious posts and then stand back and watch the fireworks/defend your position against all comers...

Of course you can troll a P+P board.

Pretty much by posting politically contentious posts designed to cause a strong reaction ..... kind of like you describe the purpose of a political board.
Trolling is often described as an online version of the breaching experiment, where social boundaries and rules of etiquette are broken. Self-proclaimed trolls often style themselves as Devil's Advocates or gadflies or culture jammers, challenging the dominant discourse and assumptions of the forum they are trolling in an attempt to subvert and introduce different ways of thinking. Detractors who value etiquette claim that true Devil's Advocates generally identify themselves as such for the sake of etiquette, whereas trolls often consider etiquette to be something worth trolling in order to fight groupthink.

    Wikipedia

So, one of the signs may well be someone who arrives at thesite and starts complaining about the "lefties" here - a forum with a large proportion of right-wingers, where bannings most often happen because of racism in posts - which are most likely to come from people on the right ...............

Another sign might well be someone who arrives with very contentious and inconsistent views which become apparent because of a high volume of posts - in a very short space of time.

The term originates from usenet - and in particular from politics threads on usenet.

    Heres another definition:
An "Internet troll" or "Forum Troll" is a person who posts outrageous message to bait people to answer. Forum Troll delights in sowing discord on the forums. A troll is someone who inspires flaming rhetoric, someone who is purposely provoking and pulling people into flaming discussion. Flaming discussions usually end with name calling and a flame war.

Do you think all of this is bad? I'm guessing from I know of your politics that you would like to challenge the dominant discourse and assumptions of the forum. I know at times I like to challenge the majority view and I suspect others do as well.

Actually I'm far more interested in thinking issues through, and in finding ways of articulating my views. I'm not particularly interested in getting involved in flame fests - they don't really achieve anything.

But, as in other aspects of my life, what you get is what is real for me when I make the post - and I can only think of one thread where I was the only voice expressing a particular viewpoint - that being the thread about the woman pilot who wanted to work 50% and went to tribunal when she was refused that request. I still, to this day stand by what I wrote on that thread - and I wasn't motivated by a desire to cause controversy .

An occassional attempt to generate heat rather than express your own views is not the same as continuous attempts to generate controversy by "breaching"

Fair enough - but the first description seems to me to be relatively tame. I read it as almost a troll is someone who stands up for an unpopular viewpoint even if everyone else thinks that viewpoint is wrong. It could just be the way I read it.

Flamings different - whilst I suspect most of us do it at some time or another I try to step back when I feel the need to lay into someone personally (responses to the Fur Hers post being an exception).
