Typical examples of right-wing socialists are fascists and neo-cons.

You truely have no understanding of political ideology, fascists and neo-cons are in no way 'socialist'

so you reckon that a 2litre deisel engine in a 4x4 emits more poluution than a 2litre deisel engine in a mondeo ...how strange.
4x4 doesn't have to be used off road.
this is one seriously hilly area ...as i said ...once the road freezes my son cannot get home without one ...and he lives in the middle of a town.
i have just been to ruthin livestock market with a mate ...there must have been three hundred plus 4x4's ...there goes three hundred liberal votes then.
all this talk of danger is pointless. just keep out of the fucking way!
i need to be able to pull a trailer on road and off ...an escort van won't do the job.

    your all jealous.
what about newage travellers who on the whole claim to be green ...driving clapped out third hand busses?

The war was a direct result of their efforts and if WWIII happens we will have to thanks both left-wing and right-wing socialists for it.

Also, for the arguement, not everyone in canada drives a 4x4. And it really snows there.

Scandinavians seem to manage without Land Rovers.

Most people can't drive in this snow not because of their vehicle, but because they are stupid. I've seen 4x4 after 4x4 get stuck in snow because the silly blonde bint driving it floors the thing in 1st gear. Not that this is of any strict relevance.

If you live in the country you can make an argument for needing a 4x4. Last time I checked, you didn't need a 4x4 to go to the Waitrose half a mile away and back.

No, they shouldn't be banned, but doubling the c-zone levy for them would be a good start. Along with vans and campers.

    Caravans I would ban.

    Kermit,

What about the jobs that would be lost if extreme measures against 4x4 drivers were passed? Aren’t Land Rovers/Range Rovers made in England?

Well, ultimatly there are going to be job losses in the uk manufacturing market, it has been and ongoing trend. If 4x4s are not manufactured to the same extent, then other cars will be. The jobs will still be available.

    What about them?

If people could only buy mid-range cars, those factories would make mid-range cars. Market forces.

I'd be more worried about the foreigners owning UK car companies, and then shutting the plants and moving them all to dagoland.

A 1.8 Mondeo is far mroe economical than a 4x4.

Ellie's parents get 19 miles out of a gallon of petrol in their Discovery. They get about 28 in a Mondeo, and we get 300 miles out of a Fiesta's tank.

As for the ice, a 4x4 makes no difference, does it? You can have 27 wheels scrabbling for grip, but if there is none you'll still slide gracefully into the hedge.

it gets him up the ice covered hill. fron or rear drives go sideways.
well a 1.8 will obviously do more than a 2.4!

But 4x4s are heavier too, because of the extra driving mechanisms, so they are less efficient. And it doesn't just apply to the big jeep things, Audi Quattros aren't as efficient as normal Audis.

If they go sideways more often than not its the driver. I've never had any bother in a little Fiesta, and t'missus' family live on top of a fook-off hill in the Lake District. Only problem they have is if the drifts are six foot high, but then the only thing that gets through is next door's tractor:D

Sorry, though in my hunt for the information i found this
By law all new car models must pass key safety tests before being sold. Data from the Euro NCAP safety tests, which rate vehicles on a star rating of 0 – 5 for crash assessment and 0 – 4 for pedestrian protection, support the premise that 4x4s are dangerous to pedestrians in accidents. Here is a selection of findings from tests on 4x4s:

    BMW X5
    • Front and side impact ratings: 4/5

    • Pedestrian protection: 1/4

    • Assessment: “High vehicles pose problems for pedestrians, especially children, and the X-5 is no exception. Its front is unfriendly and its bonnet top little better; a poor rating.”

    Volvo XC90
    • Front and side impact ratings: 5/5

    • Pedestrian protection: 2/4

    • Assessment: “The bumper and bonnet leading edge were unforgiving. But the top of the bonnet protected children’s and adult’s heads to give the XC90 a two-star rating. Volvo needs to work harder to improve pedestrian safety.”

    Suzuki Grand Vitara
    • Front and side impact ratings: 3/5

    • Pedestrian protection: 0/4

    • Assessment: “Protection was dire and scored no points. Suzuki said it will do more in future to protect pedestrians.”

    Which I though was interesting.

Though what I think you want follows...
    Consumption
Fuel consumption on some 4x4s is poor. On diesel versions, 4x4 consumption is around 30mpg, falling to 25mpg on slower journeys. For petrol versions it is around 20 mpg. Some of course are much worse. The notorious “Hummer”, a specially adapted US military vehicle weighs 8,600 lbs, is seven feet high and is made of aluminium. It costs £55,000 and does just 12.4 miles per gallon (Oakland Tribune Online Review, March 2003).
According to the House of Commons Library, the larger 4x4s consumer more petrol and produce more carbon dioxide emissions than the larger saloon cars.” The table below shows this to be the case across a range of specific examples. All emissions given are measured in grams per kilometre (g/km).

Model Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Nitrous Oxide (NOX)
    Volvo XC90 (4x4) 242 0.48
    Volvo S/V 40 (saloon) 184 0.061

    Toyota Land Cruiser (4x4) 277 0.52
    Corolla WT-I 1.4 (saloon) 159 0.02

    BMW X5 (4x4) 259 0.637
    BMW 320d (saloon) 206 0.392

    Mitsubishi Shogun (4x4) 251 0.583
    Mitsubishi Carisma (saloon) 174 0.018

Well, you did ask. Though it's an interesting question, one with deep philosophical meaning. And other than the obvious answer, that is shows a correct and incorrect viewpoint. I'll have to get back to you.

I told you what my sources were in the post mate. But yes, Kermit's right I facts can be manipulated to prove anything. I could have lopped off the rest of the table where there was very little difference between the 4x4 and saloon or even results were the saloon version was worse. I didn't, but it's possible.
