of course fat jokes and jokes about people from other countries are funny because we can laugh at them as a whole. someone says a paki joke and their racist. whoops im must be a racist towards my own ethnic group.

I still don't get this whole "insulting your own kind" thingy. I have never called any one a "******/nigga/whatever". Making jokes is fair enough, I find it quite easy to laugh at myself, but why use stupid, offensive words?
i'm an english man living in a part of wales that is quite hostile to us english invaders ...the english jokes in the pub are relentless!
the politics are often nasty ...the english here are reffered to by the welsh nationilsts as being no more welcome than foot and mouth ...the english should be wiped out. thats not the jokes thats a very serious side to some of the politics round here.

This is the reason we've got such a "them and us" culture in society these days, and I don't think it's even because black and Asian people are too easily offended, because I don't think that's the case one bit.
On the other hand, that's not to say "targets" of jokes like these have no right to be offended, race relations are still a touchy subject. If that's the case then you're well advised to apologise and not do it again.

I think most sensible people realise that "racist" joke does not equal deeply racist person.
But as I said, if someone gets offended then it should stop, irrespective of whether they need to lighten up. It's not just to do with racism, it's to do with manners and respect.

I have a theory. I feel that something should only be classed as racist if it is meant as an insult. I felt that joke was insulting, which is why I feel it is racist.
