Anyone from Liverpool or studying counselling?

Hi! I hope you're all well :)

I'm currently living in Portugal but want to move to Liverpool next year. I would love to know someone there. Do any of you live or know someone who lives in Liverpool? I don't want to feel alone there like I do know :(

Also, anyone studying counselling? I would really appreciate some advise on routes, accredited courses (in Liverpool) and all that good stuff...

    Some people might not be too up for sharing where they live (but it's okay to ask about general areas/cities), but a few folks around here are interested in psychology and therapy of various kinds. Hopefully some people can come in and offer some insight. :chin:

    Hey there,

    I don’t live in Liverpool, or England in fact, but I am interested in counselling too so though I might share some of my insight with you and hope that it helps a little!

    Firstly, in the UK, counsellors are not regulated. This means that there are no set qualifications or training that you need in order to call yourself a counsellor, and instead there are many different routes into counselling.

    The two main routes of education in the UK would be college courses or university degrees. In college, there will be courses levelled 1-6 that start from counselling skills and theory to the different types of counselling and therapy. For university, you may need an A-Level in psychology (the a-level may also be offered in some colleges) or other qualifications that are equivalent to A-levels. With colleges, you can apply directly to the college by contacting them, but with university, you’ll need to apply through UCAS https://www.ucas.com/

    Even though there are no set standards, it is important to check that the courses available, either from colleges or universities, are accredited by professional bodies. For the college courses, you can check with the CPCAB http://www.cpcab.co.uk/ For university degrees and some college courses, you can check with the BACP http://www.bacp.co.uk/accreditation/Accredited Course Directory/ If you are more interested in psychotherapy, then you are better off looking for courses accredited by the UKCP https://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/join/our-organisational-members-and-trainings/training-organisations-2/

    And to make things ever so slightly more confusing, some organisations allow you to study their own counselling qualifications. For example, if you have a level 3 qualification in counselling skills, you can gain other counselling qualifications with the organisation Relate https://www.relate.org.uk/about-us/work-us/train-be-counsellor who specialise in relationship counselling.

    This may be a lot to take in, so just take your time and do a little research and remember we are all here to help if we can!

    Im from England but not in Liverpool. But Probably all the same.

    I'm interested in therapy. I do a corse which is called - Health and social care, level 3 diploma btec. Which i think a lot of colleges have. Which opens up a lot of things to do after. And wqnt to become a therapist after and know it is possible because my sister is one from it. But need certain grades and requirements to get in. And may in need to work your way uo after or go uni for counselling..I'm not sure.

    But there are probably appenterships and are A levels and could probably study subjects to do which counselling.

    Thank you @Shaunie I looked into that too but I found out that this may work better for me after speaking to the national career services. I was hoping to get some help about colleges since they can't talk about specific places.

    ​I've already done my studying :p​ I have a degree in Educational studies and am currently registering to be a teaching assistant. I'm just conflicted as to whether to go into teaching or counselling. But whatever I decide to go into, I probably will study in Wales, at least for the foreseeable future. I admire anyone who moves to another country though!
