I received an email today from uni regarding my mitigating circumstances...they have allowed me to retake 2 whole modules without capping my marks. I am extremely pleased that I have the opportunity and I am genuinely thrilled about them allowing me to do my retakes over the summer as it means I don't have to retake the whole year which was the original plan...however, I am feeling quite overwhelmed at the amount of work (I have 5 weeks to write 2 essays and sit an exam!?!) and I have no notes because they got lost in the move and I am managing my Dept for 3 of those weeks whilst my manager buggers off on hols...but I will do it...it might mean sleepless nights and tears and doubts in my abilities but I will do it...I will fight for it...and right now I'm going to confirm I want to do it, decline my 3 different places on different college courses and start planning these essays!!!!! *and breathes....*

No doubts miss! Break it down into manageable chunks, and tackle it bit by bit!

    Congratulations Missy!

    So pleased for you.

Like others have said - bite sized chunks. You know the stuff - you can easily do this if you put your mind to it.

First things first, get the diary out. Put all your work/other commitments into it.

Then write a list of what needs to be done with the uni stuff - split it into bitesize chunks and slot them into the slots on the diary. We'll help you.

Thank you guys :) I seemed to have turned into a raging hormonal emotional wreck but im blaming the heat, my period and the fact I seem to have forgotten to eat!! I have to keep uni as a positive factor/distraction/focus or I will fall apart completely! I have rescheduled my working days and today as I have been working I only aim to do the intro to my first essay in prep for my day off tomorrow where I'll get stuck into the first part! :)

    Sounds like an excellent plan.

I found that trying to plan slightly further ahead, and making reaslitic chunks really helped with a sense of perspective.

Also, don't forget the value of planning when you're dealing with essays. I'm sure you know all this, but you can make a lot of progress with an essay without writing any sentances or paragraphs. Mindmapping, spidergrams, bullet points etc are all valuable tools on the way to the finished essay and can be easier to do before/after work or in lunch breaks than actually writing the prose. Then you can splurge the paragraphs at another point, and then come back and do the formatting at another point.

Again, referencing and formatting is something that's often easily done in the evening in front of the tv/after work.

Got 5 weeks - so no massive rush.

You've had practise, and can provide some guidance and reassurance my dear.

The best tip I can give you is to do it as you go along. Especially if it's a long essay with lots of sources. Either write them all down on a separate sheet (saves having to change everything if you add/remove any in your final draft) or add them as you're writing.

    What's your subject?

I don't know what referencing you use, but I use Southampton's guide to Vancouver - http://www.southampton.ac.uk/library/resources/documents/vancouverreferencing.pdf

I tend to write them down separately as I go and any referencing in paragraphs i make a rough note of in the paragraph and amend later...

The first is Contemporary Issues in Management and the second one is International Marketing Management.

Thanks YSH...we use the Harvard Referencing system...im not sure how different they all are?

I used Harvard, found it really easy. Some basic info on this sheet (it refers to UCL policy, but Harvard referencing as a style doesn't change between universities).

So, today is officially Day 1 of retakes and I have written 20% of Essay 1 (400/2000 words) and I spent a good few hours doing research...I started at 7am and plan to finish in 10 mins (4:30) for the day! I don't know what I set out to achieve but it sure feels good to have something on paper and a plan!

I promised I would make my Dad proud; therefore, I WILL graduate next Jan! :d

    Woohoo!!!!!!!

Go you. That's a fantastic start. As things progress, you might find it handy to have some kind of plan, or at least list of things to achieve (slightly more broken down into chunks than essay 1, essay 2, revise) so that you can put MASSIVE ticks next to them.

You're doing brilliantly - getting started is always the hardest part and you've just aced that.

    Thanks :)

I am really rubbish at planning when it comes to coursework. When I do my exam I will have a proper revision timetable in place and revision cards made, etc.

I tend to find as I start my essay I then make a plan, so for instance, I know that although I have written the section in the actual essay I need to do a PESTLE analysis to include in my appendices and have made a separate note...also this particular essay has three parts so I have split each part into two so I have research findings and recommendations. As the three parts aren't equal in marks I have also estimated a percentage of the wordcount to each question to reflect that.

I think I need to write a plan at the start of each day and bullet point what parts I want to have covered...I guess that way I know exactly what I will achieve and by when...I am much more focused this time round though and I feel my head is in a better place. Also, doing this unit has made me reconsider marketing as a career choice and I made plans for what I want to do on graduation as an incentive...

I need a marketing expert to tell me if I am even doing this right because I keep looking at my essay and thinking..."this is nowhere near good enough for at least a 2:1" and I know I don't HAVE to achieve that; however, I have a lot of grades to make up from 2nd year so ideally if I want a 2:1 degree I need very high grades in all of my final year units...no pressure! But yeah...anyone who has done/is doing marketing who can advise? Greatly appreciated!

Probably a stupid question - but is there a tutor you can talk to about it? Or another student on the course? Or a post grad type?

I have the email address for the unit tutor but I don't know how much advice she is allowed to give? I almost want someone to read the first 1000 words I have written as a draft and go "yes that's along the right lines, but you should consider including x, y or z" or "no, that's not what they are asking - you need to consider x or y"...if that made sense?? In terms of other students - I study entirely online so I don't actually have any contact with them or know any of them and the units I study are different to the ones the full time groups do...

I have drafted an email to the tutor that goes something like this:

"I am currently writing my IMM retake assignment; however, I was wondering whether you could give me some guidance on whether or not I am along the right lines with my current draft?

I have attached a copy of my first draft that, so far, only answers question 1 and the beginnings of question 2 and doesn’t include the correct references or appendices that will document the relevant case studies which support my arguments. I am just unsure as to whether I am on the right lines or should be addressing the assignment in a completely different way?

I understand that you may not be able to give me specific feedback on the draft I have included; however, any advice you can give would be gratefully received?"

Underestimated the workload. Still no answer to my email. Lost all motivation. No faith in myself or my abilities. Never going to finish it in time so may as well just give up. Was unrealistic to think I would ever get a decent degree anyway.
