Personally, I'm with clem mostly. I though this was "meant" to be a thread about "actually I quite like 1direction" or "no I don't like bacon" or perhaps more extreme "people who can't park should have their license revoked" but seeing some of the stuff on here... not great is it? This shouldn't be a free ticket to air stuff that's frankly offensive rather than unpopular.

:-) when I originally made the thread that's what I thought, but people raised difficult issues and then mods moved it to p&d. Are you referring to my posts wrt to 'frankly offensive'?

Yeah it's weird because that's how it initially started out. I quite like this thread even though I do find some of the opinions depressing. But I disliked the earlier assertion that I had to suck it up and not respond at all. And most recently 'well what do you expect in an 'unpopular opinions thread'?

If you spew an opinion like 'those over 70 should be culled' or 'the holocaust never happened' then expect a reaction or a counter argument. People can air their ugly views but by the same right people should be free to question and respond to those views.

There are more than enough threads if people want to go post inane banalities. I'm glad this thread's turned out the way it has; it's about time we had some discussion in P&D. And if people are crying "offence" then all the better - it means we're talking about something of substance for once.

    Since you mentioned that:
Anyone caught driving under the influence (perhaps not the first time but the second or third, although I'd support it being the first) should be given a choice: either they can never again drive legally, or they can never again drink legally. They'd be fined (or worse) any time they are found in a driver's seat or holding a drink, depending on their choice.

Yes, love discussion. Discussion good. However, hiding under a shroud of "I don't have to explain myself cos this thread" isn't cool when saying some of the things that have been said.

If that's directed at me, I never said "don't respond"! If I said anything it was "don't be surprised you disagree with opinions".

Yeah it was. It's hard not to be surprised at some of the things in this thread. Your drink-driving choice is interesting btw.. ha

Is anyone hiding under that shroud? As stated, I believe the most controversial were trolling attempts initially and only turned serious as people discussed them. I've not seen anything like 'we should burn gays lol' and the report button is right there...

I think we need to divorce outright trolling and antagonising from the majority of posts which are simply unpopular opinions ranging from 9/11 to depression to weight loss.

    Could be wrong though!

considering I KNOW a lot of the people posting on this thread arent 14 and brand new to teh interwebz, im surprised people think this thread is shocking and disturbing. I have seen nothing on this thread I find particularly outrageous.

stupid maybe, but not shocking or unique, but its possible to respond with why you believe someones opinion is ridiculous, rather than be all horrified that people actually THINK those things.

Ive seen more offensive stuff in the daily mail, and thats freely available

SCC- Everytime I have tried to respond I've been discouraged from doing so because being offended and explaining why you're offended tends to get confused with 'she's a leftwing martyr on a high horse who wants our freedom of speech taken away'. Miraculously.

I'm trying! But if another person tells me the title of this thread or misunderstands my disagreement for a gagging order/this thread to be locked then I'm liable to explode.

I'm quite entertained that so many took my suggestion that people over 70 should be culled (although I think I said 72 to be precise - but I may have rounded it for simplicities sake).

I was kind of being serious. I am aware that it's a way out there idea, but it would potentially also solve a lot of the issues in society that we seem to prefer to ignore.

In fact, I'm going to toddle off and start a thread for it all by itself.

I thought it was tongue in cheek given the context of the thread at that point (most of the posts were getting more and more ridiculous) but the discussion it spawned was and is interesting. Bongbudda made a similar thread about 6 years ago.

I never, ever intended to discourage you from posting. I'm sorry if anything I said had that result.

everyone is entitled to have their opinions, even if theyre obnoxious and evil I guess.

If anyone had tried to knock off my lovely nanas 14 years earlier than they needed to be when they were living full healthy and enjoyable lives and were still enriching the lives of so many around them, I would have killed them with my own bare hands.

Ageism is something that really pisses me off. I have a real soft spot for the elderly in general. They are so ignored, patronised, abused, forgotten. We used to respect our elders and their wisdom and life experience. Now they are just treated like absolute shit and its shameful

    Post of the Week/Month

The way we, as a country, treat the elderly is fucking disgusting. Denial of care, NHS treatment, abuse in care homes/hospital......... Thank fuck i'm never gonna get old and still have a voice by the time i die.

    Agree too.

Having worked as a carer in a care home for elderly people with dementia I would do everything in my power to avoid sending my mum to live in one. This is from personal experience. I don't want to upset anyone whose grandparents/parents/whoever is in a care home now but the lack of training and ineptitude of some carers I saw who were supposed to be 'mentoring' me scared the shit out of me.

and 70 is not even old. My mum is 64, still working and enjoying it, healthy, goes to the gym twice a week, does voluntary work for several different charities on her days off paid work, enjoys live music, socialising, just bought a place in france for when she can eventually bring herself to retire. Shes been paying into her own pension for years.
I cannot think of 1 single good reason why you would think she would need euthanasing in 6 years apart from you being deluded/unrealistic/stupid/evil/cuntish/sociopathic

Speaking of unpopular opinions. This chap wants New Zealand to be free of cats. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jan/22/new-zealand-cat-lovers-campaign

I like cats as much as the next person, but I think thats fair. New zealand was always free of predatory mammals and had a unique ecosystem of birds, the population of which has been decimated for the sake of people having fluffy domestic pets

I agree that pet owners should be encouraged to neuter their cats to prevent overbreeding but I think it's a bit much to wipe out the entire population of cats for that one nation. Cats can't be the only predatory animal to kill birds and I think there is a danger of getting too involved with nature.
