Went to pick some more medication up today and since the start of my brand spankin' new HIV drugs, my Viral Load has gone from 1,766,000 to 1,025 and my CD4 has gone from 23 to 343. So i'm sorry to say i'm gonna be around a bit longer ! and no more fucking nebulisers, hurrah :)

I understand that this is a good thing - but what do the numbers mean?

Viral Load - number of copies (viruses) in X amount of blood. The lower the better.

CD4 - The number of a particular white cell (CD4) which is a major part of your immune system. The higher the better.

If your viral load went down that much, why is it not possible to lower it to 0 and basically cure you of the hiv infection?

The way i understand it. HIV just isn't in your blood. It's in your bone marrow, it's in your joints etc. The drugs work not by killing the virus, but by slowing down the speed at which it replicates. I used to have undetectable (less than 50 copies) but im still HIV+.

Nothing can kill HIV, well Flash antibacterial wipes can but you can't inject those :D

the way I understand it, HIV is actually quite a weak virus outside of the body, it's just that we have no immunity to it, quite the opposite.
