Facebook: good or bad?

With the social networking site such a popular pastime now. How do you rate being active on Facebook from your experience?

People say it's addictive, get too many random friend adds coming and so many people in your life unnecessarily knows what you're up to. On the other hand the social contact through the screen is good entertainment, you're bonding with people online you already know and it's a way to enhance your periods of boredom at home

So what's good and bad about Facebook?

I just deactivated my facebook. I'm fed up of it tbh.

At least now my family can't bitch at me about being a hypochondriac. I doubt any of them even know my email address.

I love it! Its a way of keeping on touch with people

    Good:
    Alleviates boredom
Keep in contact with people you otherwise might not
    Meet new people

    Bad:
    Possibly addictive
    Distracting from uni work
Everyone knows your business (of course there is the option of umm... dont put anything on there you dont want people to see!!!)
Seeing something you dont want to see - heightening paranoia about relationships
People treat it like PerveBook with requests from random creepy guys coming through

Cant think of anymore right now but as Franki has done, if you dont like it, dont do it!!

I like it for the games. I did a couple updates but nobody cared so I gave up on that part and just play my farm ;)

Bad: I still have about 40 pages of stuff and a presentation to write in 18 days and havn't done a thing :p

Also bad, my boyfriends friends have now turned farm into a competition and its no longer fun. I havn't done anything but the 4 hour blueberrries and carrots for overnight or work days in ages *saddest person in the world* :p

I wish I worked at a job where I could play it!

I've not tried the games. Given up on status updates myself- helps fuel addiction as you look for any comments. I don't do much on Facebook now, except log on twice a day to view only

You're be amazed........one day a family member or close friend will persuade you to reactivate! if just it was possible to completely and irreversibly deactivate

I don't get that many random friend requests, really. You can change your privacy settings if that kind of thing bothers you. Spent ages on it at uni, less so now but it's definitely good for keeping in touch with people, more so than just by phone.

It's what you make of it really. You can choose to put your whole life on their, or you can choose to keep details to a minimum.

I reckon I'll grow out of it one day, but not just yet.

I doubt that very much. My family were the reason I left. I have no real reason to be on there - all the people I want to keep in touch with have my email address.

To be added to the list of Bad Things About Facebook:

The endless bloody invites to applications such as Farmville. Get the message, people. I wasn't interested the first time I heard of it, inviting me to join another 12,000 times is not going to change my mind.

I think its total waste of time, i have not deactivated it yet because most of my friends email me there, but i no longer visit the site (it was really hard to controll).

But there is another way to stop wasting your time on facebook. What i have seen is that people waste most of their time in watching funny videos shared by their friends and its because facebook has "New Feed" tab at the top, which means you will see whatever your friends are sharing, so there is only one solution to that, move "Status Updade" to top, since people update their status not more than 2-3 times in a day, but they share more than 20 videos in a day, so you dont have to look at those and just see what your friends up to and you can do it only once in a day.

I don't go for videos, but like to shift through friends photo albums

Send a semi polite/rude message back to tell them to stop

It tends to be when you have lots of friends from certain networks. Complete strangers from the same network see your profile box pop up on the home page, with mutual friends, decide to add you only to beef up their friends count. I just block these random friends request- no thanks I have all the Facebook friends I need today

the random friend requests is werid :p

but i'm loving FB at the min, even if i keep getting invitations for quizes!

The good side of Facebook - I've managed to network with a few old classmates. It's kinda taken off from where Friends-Reunited had left it in year 2001, except that Facebook is free.

The neutral side of Facebook - Well in 2005, it was all about Faceparty. Then overnight, the rave was Facebook, as black and white as that.

The bad side of Facebook - People's constant necessity of sending *poke*, virtual beer/hugs/younameit, and quizzes. It's not the quiz itself that bothers me, but the fact that it requires about 10 clicks and careful reading of their disclaimer before you install it as an app.

For a social networking site, I prefer deviantART. It's for artists, mod/skinners and photographers. If you have a specialist interest and you draw such art, like-minded people can search out your art and network up with you. My example is Lilo & Stitch, the Disney film. I've touched based with many on there now who are also interested in the film and Disney in general. You do get a profile page and you can lay it out likewise to Facebook's. You can even add applications to it but you don't get spammed with application requests from people on your buddy list. You do get something equivalent to FB's "wall", where people will usually comment on your art or something else if they already know you a little bit. No *pokes* though, thank God!

When people in TheSite's Relationship forum complain that such-and-such has changed their stance / status on their Facebook page, it tells me that people are taking Facebook too seriously. C'mon guys, people were friends before that site existed :-D

    I love it.

I don't use any crap on there, but its a fantastic networking tool. Also good for 'poking' people you kinda know and have added to your friends list but want to get to know better, without being overtly up front about it!

Obvious downside of when your ex is making kissy faces with her new fella and you're not over her, but you can't have everything :p.

For all it's downsides, it's very good at being able to stay in touch - like email but much more communicative and collaborative as you can send a message to everyone who cares saying 'I feel shit today. Someone buy me a beer.'.

The invitations and the "You might know [idiot]" are bad enough but then there's constant bullshit like:

"I'm walking the dog. It doesnt like rain."

"I'm at a really good party and am well pissed." - mobile phone update

"I just put pasta bake in the oven."

    "[Unintelligible text speak nonsense]"

being spammed on the feed thing.

    God I hate facebook.

It's great, and a PITA at the same time. I tend to think it works best amongst friends, rather than including family too... though that's a huge generalisation.

I quite enjoy seeing what folk are up to, often the ones I've not really kept in touch with, for a variety of reasons. Some of the people I knew at school, I've actually become fairly-decent FB friends with. Others continued to drift into oblivion, and likely for fair reason.

HOWEVER... I'm not massively proud when close family hear of my drunken vomit list... that's quite awkward. Yes, I chucked up over the printer, my slippers, weights, the carpet, headphone cable, and the bedside cabinet. Yes, I posted the list on Facebook when very, very drunk... yes, I'd sooner you didn't tell my Dad... ;)

Like anything else, it's very good - in moderation. I've made some fair friends through it, but it can easily consume much of your life. Particularly when you're playing Bejeweled Blitz and Bouncing Balls...

The repeated requests piss me off. If I ignore it, I'd like to ignore all future requests from it... though it may even be like that now?

What doesn't appeal, are certain Facebook status updates...

"I'm going to the chip shop"

    "I'm stuck in the queue"

"Woo! I've got chips AND a sausage AND fish AND a burger AND gravy AND curry sauce!!"

    "Feck, I'm full"

"xxxxxxxxxx has spent the day either in bed, or on the bog, squitting themselves."

Though it's likely no worse than me... ;)

E-mails are simplistic and unimaginative, whilst Facebook represents complex fun!

Just comment on their status 'did you have to tell us all the nitty gritty of your sad life?' and remove their friendship afterwards. Thats the joy of Facebook, after making a friendship there's the chance to give them the elbow anytime you fancy

That's why I'm retired now. Still got an account there, but done do anything except the occassional shift through profiles to remind myself of what's going on

To all the posters moaning about to many app requests you know you can customise what you do and don't see, right!? So once you've recieved just one request you can set it so that you never see or hear anything of that applicaton again. Same with notifications and the same with people whom are on your friends list but whos lives you dont particularly care to learn about.
Only downsides for me are that it is adictive! It can be a bit of a distraction from uni work but then pretty much everything seems interesting when compared with the alternative.
And FB chat is pretty gash, excellent feature when it works but half the time messages just dont make it.
I think all in all though it's a fantastic website, makes it so much easier to plan things (big night out, holiday, party etc), you can keep in touch with the people you want to without wasting a fortune in phone credit, and frape is always a fun past time.

facebook is good for catching up with my inner social circle, ha. and that word 'networking' i guess.

i dont like the self obsessional side that seems to come out in people on there. updating statuses all the time, moany statuses, people who take themselves too seriously.

ooh and the pretentious knobs who have really stupid about me sections that i like to laugh at.

oh and twitter. seriously? no one caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaares.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I used to hate it. Now I'm a lil addicted. Don't play the games, cept Poker and Bejewelled.

    Bad things:
Can turn into an obsessed stalker with someone you like. "why has he updated his status but not text me back???" "oooh his pic is so sexy ..." etc etc
Constant invites for hugs and farmville shit. I keep getting rubbish to join a praying network. WTF. I deleted her. I don't even remember who she is really.
Invites from friends you don't know, but know you should know who they are as you have mutual friends. Ooer.
