How to prevent getting injured at football?

Lately, several people have gotten injured at the football sessions I go to. I had a minor injury myself when I saved a goal and the ball hit my finger so hard that it bruised and swelled for days. Even now, weeks later, I still can’t bend it fully. I can move it more than before, but it still doesn’t feel right, and when I touch the side, it feels like the bone sticks out a bit. I’m not sure what to do about it. The players tend to blast the ball into the net with force, and since it’s football, things like this are bound to happen. Luckily, my injury was only minor, but others have had it worse. Someone got injured just a few weeks after I started attending earlier this year and still hasn’t returned. More recently, someone somehow got kicked in the nose during a game and it was bleeding badly and apparently quite serious. I wasn’t there that day, but I heard it was a more intense session than usual.

It’s only a 7-a-side game, but the sessions can still get pretty intense with people getting injured. I only play once a week, and even then, a lot of injuries have happened during the sessions I go to. The games can get quite intense, and while I enjoy playing, I really want to avoid getting injured again. To stay safe, I try not to dive into tackles or challenge for the ball too much. That might not make me the best player on the pitch, but avoiding a leg or foot injury is more important to me. If the ball’s coming in too fast, I sometimes think it’s better to let it go in the net rather than risk taking another hit to the body or fingers. Getting winded or hurt would only make things worse, especially at the moment when the last thing I need is to be dealing with an injury. It’s not bad to go, it’s good exercise and helps to keep active, but I just want to be careful while I’m playing. I'm not sure if many people play football here but any advice would be great, cheers guys.

Hi @Redemption, thank you for sharing this! I hear how you like to play 7 a side football, but that the prospect of injury is something that's on your mind and affecting the way you play. It sounds like it's quite intense, and that injuries are quite common. Part of avoiding injury is prevention (e.g, stretches/warm down), and part is dependent on the people you're playing with. Are there perhaps similar sessions that you can join that are more casual or slower tempo, to ease that concern? We're here to listen to you!

Hey @Azziman , great to see you round again bro. Thank so much for your reply. I'd prefer to stick with these people as their familiar and it's a mental health group but I might look at other ones if it becomes too intense
