Possible explosive 'device'

Apparently they have found what they are calling an 'explosive device' in a car in the Haymarket in central London.
Curious use of words really, and a very curious attack if it was meant to be one, there arent exactly crowds of people out and about at 2am on a Friday morning in that part of town.
Scared yet?

Beep boop. I'm a bot.

You'd never make a good terrorist! If it was a bomb, perhaps they put it into position for detonating later?
It gets wierder, apparently there were gas cylinders in the car and the bloke driving it crashed into a bin and ran off.
Not sure what's curious about the wording. It's just the technical term.
Depending on who left the bomb it may have been designed to cause damage, or they were planting it for later or they were transporting it to somewhere else when the driver paniced and crashed.
At the moment we just don't have enough info - we don't even know whether it was an Islamist terrorist attack or one of the small Irish Republican groups who aren't interested in a ceasefire or even a new group we've never heard of (perhaps some extreme right or left wing group)
I suppose so, but 'potentially explosive device' does cover a pretty wide range of things for one hair spray can to a small nuke.
Have to say I'm not overly fussed.
my money is on Islamist terrorist attack
Based on what exactly - the fact that it fits the IRA MO much better?
Well I hope its Islamic - either that or an IRA splinter group are gearing up attacks or we have something brand new...
If it is the Islamists they are taking a step down, there doesnt seem to have been any explosives in the car.
You're too trusting!
"A car bomb planted in central London would have caused "carnage" if it had exploded, police sources have said. A controlled explosion was carried out on the car, packed with 60 litres of petrol, gas cylinders and nails, in the early hours in Haymarket."

There's a lot of celebrations for it at the moment.
They use that term all the time here for crappy homemade bombs. Gas cannisters, nails and petrol? Hardly the work of someone who's experienced in bomb-making.
Could've been anyone at the moment, naturally you'd tend to point to the finger to some Islamist group but you can't really speculate too much now.
Trusting? No. More worn out of being on 'high alert' because of all of these terrorist threats. They happen regularly, streets get closed, tube stations shut, etc etc all the time. 99/100 times, it's nothing. The 100th... well, 7/7 occurs. I get bored.
You go with what you can get... It would still have been pretty devestating...
There's a surprise...
Do you think that's a coincidence?
Nope.
It makes sense to carry out an attack with new leader in place etc - both if it's really just an MI5 plot (where is Cladestine anyway?) or if it's legitimate terrorism...
All a bit convenient ay? Make sure the masses keep their fears... :chin:
Im sure it was just a 'normal' attack. Even I dont distrust those in power so much as to be the sort who wears tinfoil outfits.
To be honest so is mine. I'm not mad enough to think its MI5 or the SAS. And whilst I accept the possibility its an IRA splinter group I'd say the money has to be on Islamic terrorists (motive, opportunity, means)
I suspect that your motives are based, as yo say, on an understanding whereas Territ gives me the impression that his beliefs may be based on "hatred"...
a gas canister like that exploding ,from what tey've desribed would jsut provide a fireball, nowhere near enough gas expansion to send nails flying
and the nails report, come from an eyewitness, who must have a good eye surely :O
my bet is currently either a hoax/mistake from what the bouncers saw ie guy was carrying a canister, possibly in a uninsured car or something and crashed into a bin - got worried about the canister and ran off
considering gas specialists havent turned up to london from what ive heard, i doubt the thing weas leaking propane, and it is very difficult to ignite a gas canister, especially from what we've heard at the moment, especially that no high impact ignition devices have been reported
obviously im only gonig by whats reported, but currently thats my guess - i am a graduate chemist so i know a 'little' bit about gas canisters and explosives - they'd use fertiliser and bleach weedkiller if they really wanted to set off a bomb as its a rigorous solid into gas explosion so causes good shockwaves which is good for nails if there are actually nails
OK I'll give you that
Not neccessarily - you go for what you've got. The best explosive would be military/commercial, but that's hard to find. Mass buys of fertiliser and weedkiller tend now to lead to rapid police enquiries (plus its damn unstable).
I imagine its a lot easier to buy gas canisters and nails without suspision.
I think its quite good for them, it gets them used to dealing with emergencies, but these arent very big or dangerous. Its like a nasty training exercise.
