I agree, I thought she was going to leave during the programme. Im sure deep down she wanted to be like all other teenage girls. She also seems such a clued up and bright young girl. I hope she does leave the 'cult' as i really believe she could have a good go at making a happy life for herself.
Its just a shame, that she just seemed brainwashed. Never really sure what she was saying or how to answer. Poor girl obviously had to listen to that crap from her parents for years.
Obviously cunts like me.
I have to say I don't think it's particularly bad (or "cuntish" to follow a theme) to throw a drink at a group of hate-mongerers standing by the roadside pedalling intolerance and vitriol. I doubt they were aiming for the kid specifically since they threw it from a moving car and probably weren't trained marksmen but that's not really important. Of course I'd have laughed a lot more heartily if it had hit that Shirley woman right between the eyes but I just find it hard to find the headspace to be indignant about throwing soft drinks in the face of all the shite they were chucking about. Oh, and I certainly don't think the fact that someone chucked a cup at them justifies their view about the world and its inhabitants... at all.
As for the older girl, I don't think she's likely to leave at all. Lots of people in cults are probably highly intelligent and eloquent and possibly have thoughts that wander from the path of righteousness from time to time. But the bottom line is that she's been brought up there, it's ingrained and absolute truth to her mind and the key factor is that she personally is actually treated well and provided with an extensive support network by her "family". Despite what we think she's likely to do, all signs point to the fact that she'll live out her life as she stated she thought she would. That's my view on it, anyway.
As I followed it, they meant that if you were knocked down by a car or diagnosed with cancer or died in any other way then it was an act of God and punishment for some undefined sin you had committed (undoubtedly related to "fags") and therefore God's will was being carried out and we were supposed to collapse in an orgasmic (or probably not, considering) pile of justified happiness.
I did wonder how they would explain away their own deaths though... assuming they die "naturally" before this supposed impending day when God descends from the clouds to smite us all.
Wonder what their excuse was for Chicken Pox? :chin:
remember that these people are unable to discuss their point with a logical arguement. they believe something and they are unwilling to listen to the other side, dismissing everything else, thus somehow prooving to themselves that they are right.
That is of course, assuming that they haven't already....
Yeah but it's not really Louis' job to get them to justify their beliefs really. He's more one of those documentary makers who just attempts to be a bit more observational, rather than the Michael Moore style of making some sort of political argument (which let's face it, wouldn't take much effort with this group).
Yeah I agree it was like watching Theroux bang his head against a brick wall, i mean he was reaching no-one in that family. Plus, because the subject was so insane and controversial Louis couldn't get involved, which is usually a big part of his show (ie. when he investigated porn, he had his own portfolio done for casting) which did mean it was almost entirely observational.
Actually that was a bit strong and I apologise. Never post when you are angry, I should know better.
So assaulting children, because that it was happened there, is something to
a) laugh about
b) defend because the child's parents are hate filled morons?
One thing I do have the agree with them on is that they offer no voilence, but are met with it. The voice opinions and that is not good enough reason IMHO to assault either them or their children.
Although others have left the family. I thought that her body language spoke volumes.
He questioned a lot of what they were putting forward as viewpoints. It's a biggie really - they argued that their campaign was based on what the bible says and yet he didn't pick up on that really important aspect. It is for God to judge, not us.
But I just find it interesting that in many ways they are so normal. There was just one scene where the teenage girls were just goofing around (it only lasted about three seconds) and it reminded me so much of my sisters when they were teenagers and their friends. Or when the kids were trampolining.
Also does someone know if its true (I saw it on wiki which isn't a good source) that the Pastor actually won an award for his work on civil right cases and was heavily involved in anti-discrimination... That in itself just seems odd...
