I used to like the C&C games though, so I thought I would give this a quick go... I was bored of it in 10 mins lol
I just dont like the feel of it at all or how close to the battleground you are forced to be with the camera. The units seemed a bit lacking to be honest and as shyboy said, its just a race really.
I will prob play it a bit more to give it a go but so far just dont know what I was expecting. ever since EA took over things have been going downhill (In fact I still love Tiberian sun ima go play it now!)
Supreme commander is probably the biggest 'macro-management' where you must set up an effective economic infrastructure and then perfect your output, get them pumping units out as fast as possible and then organising large scale attacks with hundreds of units.
Although for realism and immersion, nothing has come close to beating Company of Heroes where you control squads of men that react to what's going on (so if a german MG42 nest open fires on them you can be sure they all duck for cover, which is why you then send another squad round the side and throw a grenade in ). To prevent mass rushes, your side is limited to '75' men, where each man is a man obviously, thinks like heavy tanks are 8, snipers are 3 and so on. It's a really good game, much slower and requires much more thinking. It can get stalematey though, especially if I'm playing because I just spam mortars behind bunkers with a good couple of AT weapons, then rush in with a half track (gives unlimited men ) and two squads of heavy / specialist infantry to smash something up quite nicely, then run back.
For something in the middle, command and conquer generals is good. It's nowhere near as fast as command and conquer, more like starcraft (which doesn't have a fucking sequal yet, bastards!), except with a realistic-ish setting. It's quite good fun.
I think my favourite 'old school' c&c is tiberian sun. It's just brilliantly balanced and requires different play styles depending on what side you are. My best win on a clan match was me rushing into their base with titans 8 minutes in.
But you got the tournie maps that sucked because nod just dug in every time and never attacked. Arses.
Company of Heroes really isn't anything like any other ww2 game - though obviously you're gonna need to like RTS games to like it. And yeah Jarvey C&C is an rts (thankfully they haven't tried to do anything silly with the format)
hmmm, downloading now but by far the best CnC ever, is RA1, although overall i prefer the Nod/GDI series over RA series.
Nod dig in with their tanks that turn into turrets, and also their artileery which can fire STUPIDLY long ranges (think v2 x 2), GDI get hover mrls and titans which are like, sex in a mech. I'm sure the cannon is symbolic.
But the nod get banshees which are really evil bombers that can take out most things super easy. I prefer GDI though, they get firestorm defences (basically an impenetrable wall you have to charge up).
Ahhh, I need to calm down, they were the days...
I have every CnC shyboy I am a massive Command and Conquer fan, Download failed so i might try again.. I dunno yet, will prob buy the game.
Cool. I'm thinking of getting this game because I enjoyed Tiberian Sun and the Firestorm expansion so much.
lol, you invoked some memories of mine there. You ever heard of Sunedit 2K? It's a third party program to change all sorts of stuff and it gave TS and FS a new lease of life. I used it mainly to make the Cabal Core defender less powerful, the banshees more powerful and everything cost 1 dollar hehe.
We've just had some people playing it, after 2 hours they were still in a stalemate.
Takes tooooo long
not played them in ages.
I like it alot, I prefer zero hour though
It's out

Likewise!
Good game! Starts getting pretty hard in Act 3 GDI!
bit pissed off though, i forgot to save the game and the GDI campaign has reset itself. Make sure you save it at the last level
