Tories: We'll build more prisons

According to the BBC: "The Conservatives want to build more prisons so offenders can be kept behind bars for longer. They are considering allocating £15 billion to create more places in Britain's near-capacity prisons. The plans, revealed by the Sunday Telegraph, would be funded by scrapping government plans for identity cards. The Chief Inspector of Prisons has also warned prisons are close to putting up 'house full' notices with less than 1,800 places left." Click here for details
Let's be in no doubt about two things. Firstly, the news that a paedophile could be free in five years is very alarming. A justice system that genuinely protected the public would ensure this man was never, ever released. Secondly, the Tories idea of scrapping ID cards will surely be welcomed by most P&D regulars. I, for one, think it a gargantuan waste of money that will do nothing to protect the public from crime. Labour has failed to do that for nine years - this is one leopard that isn't going to change its spots.
The Tory leader is all too often susceptible to the charge of being all spin, no substance. (laughable when you look at Blair - what was that fawning drivel he sent to Michael Foot about, for God's sake?) Inevitably, liberals will cry "barbarism" and bleat about "human rights", but what alternative do we have to building more prisons? Finally, the Tories have got something right!
And to those people who don't agree, what alternatives do you suggest?

i'd prefer if the money that could be saved by scrapping id cards was spent on the countrys infrastructure.
the pedo won't be out in five years ...he will be eligable for his first parole board sitting.
agree
it's well known surely that the prisons have huge populations of people who pose no threat to the rest of us and can be dealt with differently.
prisons should be for the violent and the disgusting.
prisons should be full of muggers and robbers and burglars ...sadly that isn't the case.
So, you think that when it comes to stuff such as people being put in prison who haven't paid for their TV licence, they should just have to appear in court, pay a certain amount each week and let it be?
TV and possessing personal use drugs should not get you locked up.
Prisons should be for the murderers, attempted murderers, Violent people who have harmed some one else. Paedos as well, along with the truly dangerous who shoul dbe taken off the street for the sake of protecting the public and not just punishing the guilty, though i do agree with punishment for crimes.
Also, i think certain crimes, such as the recent paedo scandals in the papers should have something done, longer sentences, or something of that nature for such horrible crimes.
Finally, no...TV should be free for all, just like in Japan where the Government paid for everyone in the country to possess a high definiation tv!
if you can be locked up by one television company ...why not all of them?
I take it that what you're trying to say is that you think prisons should be a form of protection for (and possibly from) the public? This, I totally agree with. With petty crimes (not paying for TV licences, posession of drugs for personal use. etc) people shouldn't be put into prison.
If we are going to keep on locking up as many people as we are, shall we buy some old Gulags in Siberia? It's taking the piss now...
And major offenders are being let our early! What is going on today? Fucks sake... state of affairs in Britain.
Anyway. Yes, we needed newer prisons... and a few more than we have... but half the people in them shouldn't be in there anyway.
Yes, pretty much what i meant. Glad you got it. :thumb:
repeat offenders within the spent conviction time can go to jail as far as i'm concerned, but otherwise there is no need for jailing everyone and anyone, as prison doesn't work and hasn't
prisons will suddenly be able to do their job mroe effectively
there should be more punishment options available also, like tagging etc
on people who dont pay the defence budget % of tax, or those done for shoplifting, or those who steal to fund a habit which would be dealt with better if these habits were treated like smoking or alcoholism?
prison doesn't work on serious offenders, it just makes them either more careful, or it stops them being able to commit crimes cause they behind bars - that's why it should only be saved for violent offenders etc
prison is known as the university of crime for a reason, we don't need more prisons blatantly, what we need is a more efficient and well organised system of dealing with convicted criminals, whether it be community service for like 18months, or tagging, or prison - i'd be open to have more low security prisons with family/friends visit and maybe for lovers to 'visit' and lowering the maximum/medium secure facilities capacity, and increasing the amount of low security places
we shouldn't be locking up so many people as it stands at the moment but any move in the directions of dealing with serious offenders better and keeping them more isolated, whilst non-violent criminals just get their freedom of movement etc removed are fine by me
for christ's skae i give mroe information than the tories do on this, and these people want to be in power, but i guess people like vague headline grabbers
A lot of people who should be in prison aren't there.
The answer is not to build more prisons. Britain has already one of the highest if not the highest prison population in Europe, and for what?
TV is fucking fun stoned. I'll watch anything ;p
what you in for mate ...switchint telly on and having a smoke.
(1) Release anyone who's in prison because they failed to pay the TV licence fee or smoked some joints at home whilst not doing any harm to anyone but themselves.
(2) Scrap the licence fee and let the greedy, bloated BBC fight for its survival in the commercial market.
(3) Lock up murderers, rapists, paedophiles and other scumbags for the rest of their lives with no chance of parole or release.
(4) Make sure a life sentence means life, not just 5 years.
(5) Scrap the Early Release Scheme, which forces judges to lie every time they pass sentence.
Brill.
Ah... funniest thing I watched was Wonder Showzen.
Absolutely agree with that. Prison often does no good for those who end up there and only leads to more problems when people do get released and find it hard to get things back on track with life. Other punishments would be better in dealing with people who have committed crimes but without totally ruining their lives.
Obviously people can say that while people are in prison they won't be committing any further crimes and that's true but what happens when people do come out and are in some cases worse because of their prison experience?
well what reason is there for them to behave in prison then though....
in terms of paedophilia, just label it as a mental illness, and thus if someone gets convicted of it they can be automatically sectioned until they're no longer a threat :thumb:
most prisons are full of petty criminals who shouldnt be there, if you got them out on other punishments, you'd more than halve the prison population and be dealing with their problems better
automatic early release is a joke imo as it should be something you earn by behaving behind bars
the automatic 1/3 off sentences for pleading guilty shouldn't be automatic either, it should depend on whether the judge thinks there was a reasonable defence
the papers are so overblowing this, i bet people are wondering what happened to all the knife crime
