Something as trivial as the name "Christmas" aint that big a deal, I wasn't advocating general passive acceptance of what the council does, I myself have relatives and neighbours in my own council and talk to them regularly about my opinions on whats going on.
    It's trivial now?

Ok fair enough, but India itself has a minutely small Christian community and I doubt they're that fused on Christmas lights and I don't think Christians here should either, it's about religion, not some glitzy showpiece.

That's hardly comparable to the situation here.

I think you know what I mean. Jesus even here we'd have our own wee ways of life whereas people on the other side of Ireland would have theirs.

Probably more in number than in this country though. It's estimated that about 5-10% of the UK population are Christians.

You're missing the point, India has 1 billion people and they're not concerned about whether the streets are filled with Christmas lights and Christmas activities, i'm sure they celebrate it in their church in a private manner.

I get the impression that a lot of people here (who probably don't even go to mass) are making a big deal over this because when they shouldn't because Christmas lights have nothing to do with religion at all.

Does Ireland have more than 1600 languages?

Must be something to do with communicating with the fishmonger. I wouldn't know.

The point I was making is that if Christmas decorations are not causing offence to anybody, why not call a spade a spade?

well when people come to live here like asylum seekers and stuff who aren't christian (im not saying all), they know we're generally a christian country so obviously we'll celebrate christmas.....and they should be prepared to deal with it
it seems more and more that we have to change our ways to suit them, if they wanna come and live here they should learn to deal with our culture. It won't kill them.

If we were to go live in non christian country we would have to adapt and learn to live with their culture. So why can't we keep ours?

It does seem that way. And if they don't like it, they should go back to their own country. Personally, I think this is stupid...

    It's a non-story, a fabrication (in Lambeth at least)

    :banghead:

Kentish...it doesn't offend anyone, it's obviously the council taking precautions in case it does offend anyone, if the community has a problem with it, they should consult the council.

My point is that even if the council does remove the name and some Christians are offended, I say they have no reason to be offended, Christmas has nothing to do with lights and glamour, it's a celebration of Jesus' birth and that they should celebrate it in the Church.

Yes, but if that were the case, there would be no reason for anybody to be offended by the Christmas decorations, and therefore we just end up going round in circles.

Which is why all of these stories are just publicity stunts and nothing more.

Well I'm not a Christian but we do celebrate Christmas as my Dad's Catholic (but a non-militant one thank fuck). I'm not offended by Christmas or indeed calling things Christmas lights or Christmas presents or whatever because to be honest, it has nothing to do with me. What I hate is people who indulge in all the commercialism and either don't believe in God or don't even know what Christmas is about. And trust me, there are a lot of those type of people.

What's wrong with that though? It's a holiday.

Nothing really wrong with that because the family gets together, we eat loads and get drunk. But it's not really the real meaning of Christmas. I mean, most of the population would celebrate Ramadan if it meant presents, food and drink (which it obviously doesn't).

I was read in my local paper last week that some town council's have changed "Christmas lights" to "Winter lights" and "Celebrity Lights" because the term "Christmas lights" could offend some non Christians.

How could it possibly offend people?
There was a thing in the Express on Friday about a registry office that took down a picture of a couple getting married in case it offended homosexuals. FFS why would a picture of heterosexuals getting married offend gays?

I wouldn't be offended if someone put up some lights to celebrate Divali or whatever, so why would someone of a different faith be offended by us Christians celebrating Christmas?

Sometimes, reading through 5 or 6 threads is too much like hard work if you only want to reply to the one message.

Is India a multicultural society, no it's not.

    Er, yes it is.

Leaving aside the significant Christian population, India has three major religions playing a part in its culture. Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs are all dominant faiths in different parts of the country, and in places like Delhi and Bombay they are all there in significant proportions.

As for the PC article, some of it is true, but most of it is exaggerated, mis-represented or downright lies. PC is knocking about, and it isn't very god, but it isn't anything like it has been reported.

And some PC isn't PC at all, it's about not using terms that have become offensive. I don't see many people whingeing about how Scope changed its name, and what it changed its name from.

I'd say calling some commercially sponsered tacky lights 'Christmas lights' would be considerably more offensive to Christians than any other group.

The ones in London feature charactors from the new Ice Age film, hardly the spirit of this religious holiday is it?

    Say something!

Can i ask if any of you guys have actually written to anyone about this?
It has getting me down lately and after reading today about Havant Council renaming the switching on of the 'Christmas Lights' to 'Festival of Lights' i was gobsmacked. Even those of us that aren't christians we have always known the holiday period in December to be christmas. Havant council, so as not to offend minorities, have gotten rid of our heritage and named it after a HIndu Festival
So who's going to be offended now? :chin:
Well i thought i moan enough already so i took action and wrote an email to Tony Blair. All i can say is; maybe everyone should and then he might sit up and take notice. Its easy enough to do, just click here: http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/page821.asp or copy and paste into your address bar and type away.
I am going to go now and bug my local MP aswell now so that it doesn't happen here.

So they have named it Diwali now, have they? No, didn't think so. Fesival of lights is a generic name, it's not supposed to be associated with just diwali.
