    Hmm... I bet they do!

Throwing snowballs at cars? Heheh... brings back memories of hising in bushes and amushing anyone we knew. Or getting Council vans while they sit in them, failing to work, reading porn mags. As ever.

well when people come to live here like asylum seekers and stuff who aren't christian (im not saying all), they know we're generally a christian country so obviously we'll celebrate christmas.....and they should be prepared to deal with it
it seems more and more that we have to change our ways to suit them, if they wanna come and live here they should learn to deal with our culture. It won't kill them.

If we were to go live in non christian country we would have to adapt and learn to live with their culture. So why can't we keep ours?

I don't think our country should be allied to any religion.

Exactly. If we were to live in India, we wouldn't change all of their traditions because we don't celebrate them.

It's a term usually used to describe the people who try to impose (think that's the right word) Political Correctness on people.

Seeing as most of these stories are made up or exaggerated, who are these "people who try to impose (think that's the right word) Political Correctness on people."?

Anonymous do-gooders trying to make a name for themselves, usually.

Do you not have an opinion on political correctness?

I think I've made my views quite clear on this before, but here goes again - the vast majority of these stories are fabricated or wildly exagerrated. For instance, most schools don't use blackboards anymore so PC just doesn't come into it, or like the story about Birmingham City Council banning Christmas a few years ago in favour of Winterval. These stories are used by right wingers as a stick to beat the left. PC does however have its roots in trying to not use offensive language such as ni gger or p aki and I see no problem in that, except for when people think that they can overcome racism by changing language without challenging the power structures that underlie it.

That's part of the objection though. For example, we had "spastic" and "mental retardation", which have become unfashionable because they were used as terms of abuse. But they are actually useful terms - spastic is the medical description of an involuntarily contracted muscle etc, and retard just means slow. The reason for the shift to "learning disabled" (a nonsense term imho) was driven by the assumption that changing the name would alter the perception among the public of these people.

Having said that, terms like "mong"/"mongol" and "funny looking kid"/"flk" are rightly now frowned upon.

Yes, but spastic and retard became terms of abuse and surely cerebral palsy is a better term? Although the word spastic is still used in medicine as in "spastic colon".

    P.S.
I don't know anywhere that uses the term "learning disabled". The term is "learning difficulty".

No, they are both used, and mean different things. Someone with a learning difficulty would be, for example, someone with dyslexia or maybe ADHD. Whereas a learning disability would be someone with a permanent low IQ. (There's an exact definition somewhere that I can dig out).

ps "Cerebral palsy" is a specific diagnosis, but I take the point.

Interestingly, "spastic colon" is now included in the "irritable bowel syndrome". It seems 'irritable' is an acceptable description. Maybe that will change in the future...uncooperative? disgruntled? petulant?

God, how stupid. When I worked at the toy shop last year, the guy I worked for and everyone else who worked there was Jewish, and he made us all wear Santa hats and made me tape tinsel to all the shelves. He knew it was good business, and he wasn't offended by the Christmas lights going up all over Freeport, or the reindeer that came round.

    Stupid, stupid people.

Is India a multicultural society, no it's not. Britain is, and thats besides the point, so what if the council is doing it, big deal. Put a big "happy christmas" light banner in your garden and make a stable depicting Jesus' birth all ya want. If that is your perogative ofcourse.

Councils are accountable to council taxpayers. What you are advocating is complete and passive acceptance of whatever council chiefs decide should be done in the town.

That's not why we have elected councillors in my view.

By the way, seeing as Lambeth council are one of the council's that are supposed to have done this, it might be an idea to see what they have to say on the matter.
The suggestion Christmas has been banned is absolutely ridiculous, the usual Christmas tree will be up in the town hall, the usual Christmas carols will be sung and we're looking forward to the Christmas lights being switched on.

I'm not usually one for defending Lambeth Council as they are fucking incompetent shitheads, but the story is untrue in this case.

Maybe some people should check their facts before getting their knickers in a twist?

Something as trivial as the name "Christmas" aint that big a deal, I wasn't advocating general passive acceptance of what the council does, I myself have relatives and neighbours in my own council and talk to them regularly about my opinions on whats going on.
