Does "Christmas lights" offend you?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I was read in my local paper last week that some town council's have changed "Christmas lights" to "Winter lights" and "Celebrity Lights" because the term "Christmas lights" could offend some non Christians.

How could it possibly offend people?

another thread about petty stuff being offensive
i suppose its because of people like jehovas witnesses and other religions that don't believe in xmas, but the way i see it....if they don't want to celebrate xmas then they don't have to....and if we want to, we will. They'll just have to put up with a few lights for a few weeks....doesn't kill them does it?

But....what i find stupid is the people in a house on the block next to me....last year they put up the most naff plasticky tacky decorations the day after bonfire night
they've just gone up again this week and it looks so ugly

but for heavens sake the word 'christmas' being offensive? :eek2: people are too over sensitive these days

We are a multi-cultural society, we should accept other peoples faith and traditions. I don't find it offensive when people let off fireworks for diwali, why should thy be bothered about a few bits of tinsel and some fairy lights? Political correctness being taken too far, me thinks.

I've become much more cynical about these stories over recent years. I think the councils care not a jot about offending people, but it gets their High Street in the press = more vistors and more £s.

    Simple.

It offends me that they have been hanging above the high street since before haloween :grump:

    ridiculous.

does anyone actually care? have you ever actually met a non-christian who was offended by christmas? i haven't. the ones i know are all for christmas as long as we don't mind them celebrating diwali or hanukkah or whatever festival is all gravy in their religion.

Winter lights a better description than christmas lights. If they were christmas decorations they should come down on twelth night (and not go up until christmas eve).

It also is a lot easier than calling them diwali, eid and christmas lights when you're trying to justify the cost....

Who the fuck thinks of Jesus and Christinity when they hear Christmas anyway these days? It's all about fat paedophiles and trees now.

all i have to say on this issue is, Church of England, this countrys religion is christian and we should be allowed to celebrate it, other religions should have to be able to accept that since we are allowing them to be part of our society ... gets on my nerves all the politacally correct stuff , just really stupid that people complain about our heratige

No, I've never met a non-christian who is offended by Christmas, however, sometime last year, a Jewish friend of mine did ask for us not to keep going about it all the time but would still ask me what I ended up getting for Christmas...

I pure, straight hate Christmas. It's such a sham these days. I suppose if I were a Christian I'd get even more offended. People have forgotten the meaning of Christmas in the name of commercialism. It's fucking crap.

 That reminded me of a great Christmas joke.

What do Father Christmas and Michael Jackson have in common?

They both go into kids' bedrooms and empty their sack.

What about the people who might get offended that they are taking the word Christmas out? Does anyone think about them?

Quite obviously not. I thought this was a Christian country, therefore we have rights to do stuff like this and if non-Christians don't like it then that's their problem...

    True.

How long though, until we cannot hold normal conversation for fear of offending someone? Or the Thought police incase we think something bad that may offend a mind reader?

Let's not go there. I have been to some places in my mind I would rather not go ever again.

I suspect the people most offended by the use of "christmas" in association with this consummerist festival are the true christians...

What a strange question. How could he not be real? - he's been leaving presents for me every year for 22 years.

 And this is no doubt where it will lead.

As an intersting point, notice how you go into a Muslim-owned shop in town... often as not they have deccies up in there!
WTF? If they are so offened, what are they doing?

Exactly. This has nothing to do with causing offence, but everything to do with publicity for whichever town is being the most ridiculous this year.

Maybe they have a competition between Town Halls up and down the land for the town with the most absurd politically correct policy each year. :chin:
