The problem is that harsh sentances sound like a good idea. No one rational is going to risk robbing if they are going to get 10 years for it.

But neglects to realise that most people who commit dangerous crime either dont care about the risk, dont think they will get caught or are desperate/dangerous enough to take the risk.

To a heroin addict it really makes no odds whether the sentance is 1 year or 100 years. They NEED that fix.

Theoretically yes, and that is why prison should be about rehabilitiation just as much as punishment. Sadly at present it's all about punishment and humilliation with few rehabilitation, education or skill-building programmes being available. Add that to the violence and drugs that are present in every prison and you will see why so many people re-offend.

I'm using a drug addict as an example but others can be just as desperate.

As I have said before, if you give someone nothing to lose they are dangerous.

We have the health secretary saying smoking is one of the few pleasures for people on sink hole estates. I think that tells you how bad even the government knows they are.

Community sentances are cheaper and more effective.

As I said - you're misinformed. Yes there is some help in prisons for addicts, but the workers are often overworked and underpaid, given little support by the screws and often there is no aftercare.
Couple that with the huge amount of heroin inside prisons, and people often don't get any help at all.
In fact a mate of mine went inside without a habit and came out with one.

Blagsta I think he was saying that there SHOULD be help in the prison not that there really is.

lukesh ...after all thats been saifd in this thread you still seem to think jail is an easy ride. british jails are probably the toughest in europe.
all this stuff about rehabilitation and help coming off heroin. there are people breaking out of the softer jails and knocking on the doosr of the tougher ones to escape the amount of heroin within the jail. there are many people go in for persistenly refusing to pay fines or even council tax ...they come out armed with criminal knowledge and a drug problem ...that can't be right.
we lock up more people than anywhere else in europe and the result is we have the biggest drug problem in europe the biggest drink problem in europe and the highest reoffending rate in europe.
if your idea of re-educating/training people in prison is to work ...where is the money going to come from ...some of you don't like paying taxes!
teachers ...specialist teachers ...psycologists ...psychiatrists ...social workers ...medical staff ...councilors ...your ok about lavishing all this money on these proffesionals so that razor rick can learn to read and write?
...and people won't be queuing up to work in prisons where the men have no running water or electricity ...most of the british jails ...the places stink. there are men sobbing their hearts out ...there are people going crazy ...there are lunatics in there ...there are desperately broken and sad people in there ...there are innocent people in there ...there is violence and bloodshed ...would you want to work there?
the problems are huge ...just lock everyone up and throw away the key doesn't work.
you could find yourself in jail for a few years because you make one terrible and tragic mistake driving down the road ...if it happens to you do come back and tell us all about the cushy life you were living in there won't you.

As a matter of fact it's probably another form of punishment.

They could even be really twisted and make them watch Big Brother all day long.
