Student Union

Alright, we got one at college. But... an issue here... you MUST seemingly be a pro-liberal, pro-america, pro-west type person to be allowed in it. Yes. What do you think of this idea? As, otherwise, it would seem views are not tolerated. So much for liberal part of it, but you get the image, right? What do you guys think?

    Um....I don't think so....

The National Student Union is on average a body that is slightly left wing. (Even if exeter is weird and has a really big Conservative Youth division :()

I've paid very little attention to what our student union does. One of my friends did ask me to be the events co-ordinator for the Conservative Society :D

It didn't work out because I had too much stuff on, but for Freshers, I was going to organise a day where we handed out blue condoms with the slogan 'Stop Labour' on them. It would have been wonderful had it not been for that bastard essay on serine proteases in blood coagulation :crying:

its odd tories together can have a good debate but in national views theyre scum :p

When I was at Durham University the Union was campaigning against something in particular but I was actually in favour of the thing they were against... actually come to think of it there were two issues I felt strongly about but in the opposite manner to the Union. I didn't do or say anything but they professed to speak on behalf of all students. Hmmm. :(

Exeter almost disafiliated from the Student Union last year. For some reason our 'Student Union' is called a 'Guild' Though loads of people dislike this.

Also our union last year refused to not support top up fees. :|

my unions actually alright its just far too pc it has a womens officer and a ethnic minorities officer, when a good proportion of my university is ethnic minorities and female so nowasdays theres no need for it - scrap the 2 roles and replace with one for stopping unfair discrimination

The NUS is a pile of crooked, wannabe-lefty, pinko tree huggers who are just as corrupt and bent as any other union there has ever been.

So it stands to reason that if the union at the top is like that, such a consciousness will filter down to the rest.

I thought they were just there for giving me 10% discount at topshop.

Charles Clarke and Jack Straw are both previous NUS presidents...I guess it's recommended training for aspiring Labour politicans. Probably part of the reason why the NUS is so crap that whoever is leading it is probably just in it for a bit of work experience before going into politics. I'm sure whoever's leading it at the moment will forget their opposition to Labour's top-up fees when they become a Labour politican...Wonder how Charles Clarke would have reacted to the idea of top up fees when he was NUS president. :chin:

Still the NUS is good for 10% off at HMV and Topman even if it is useless in every other respect.

That girl who was the NUS president last year actually seemed to align herself with the socialist party. She did a talk at a socialist students meeting at my uni last year.

And you can bet in five years time she'll still be talking the talk about socialism whilst on a £500k per year salary in the City.

And you’re very naïve if you believe that means a thing.

As NUS president Charles Clarke consistently complained of student grants not keeping up with inflation and not enough people getting the full grant…As Education Secretary Charles Clarke forced through the introduction of top up fees, now students pay more and very few are eligible for grants.

Clarke too, like Straw and every other NUS president aligned themselves with socialism (and some past NUS presidents have been more communist leaning) yet they soon turned into respectable moderate politicians.

I’m not a socialist so it doesn’t really bother me that NUS leaders pretend to be uncompromising left wingers and then transform into ‘respectable’ Labour politicians or stroll into top jobs in the city but it does really make a bit of a farce of the NUS. Although I’d have far more respect for the NUS even though I am not a socialist if their leaders were genuine rather than just aspiring Labour politicians on work experience.

yet they soon turned into respectable moderate politicians.

So abandoning belief in correcting the wrongs of the world and establishing a system which works for the benefit of humanity deems him "respectable"??

My student union is cool as they've moved to put a fair trade coffee shop in the canteen and stopped selling coca cola products. However the Union bar still sells coke but... -shrug-

The Union here is quite liberal or so it seems, but then my university is very multicultural, has courses such as human rights and is in a fair traid town.

Are you insane?? Have you been to uni yet?? The Student Union is the complete opposite. They are very aint-west, anit-american esepcially and crow on an on about liberal democracy and who they are so democratic when in actual fact they suport socialism, marxism andnot said squat about brutal fundamentaist regimes.

In fatc, if you are even somewhat for the west, america and a liberal democracy you get put down and looked down for it. Thats how it was at my uni.

    That's an easy one

Socialism = good and kind and fluffy

Capitalism = nasty, bad and evil

Or do you have a more sophisticated analysis that you've never got round to sharing with the rest of us
