Human Rights...

Teh_GerbilTeh_Gerbil Posts: 13,332 Born on Earth, Raised by The Mix
So, the USA is attacking Cuba again on Humans Rights issues and violations, although I do like how Cuba pointed out that the US doesn't have room to talk when it runs centres like Guantanamo and Abu Graib.

BUT: Why have large and powerful countries like China been ignored? Is it because they weild so much power? Hell, China even made jokes about the US picking on Cuba.

Its nice to see that these things are only a problem when the country isn't a world superpower.

The U.S. doesn't give shit to China because China is kind enough to be a trade partner with us. When Castro kicked out the U.S. backed regime he cut ties with the U.S. which apparently is equivalent to sitting you butt on the San Andreas fault because the party has been going since then.

The limitless supreme fucking hypocrisy of the US government knows no bounds.

The way it has castigated Cuba and made millions of people suffer for four decades while happily supporting (and in some cases, installing in power) brutal fascist dictators a million times bloodier than Castro simply beggars belief.

No one is suggesting that Castro's regime is a good one. But the incredible obsession of the US with that little country and the appalling embargo it's applied (and the threats to countries that dare trade with Cuba) is completely disproportionate to the regime.

Funny how ultra-poor Cubans still have better levels of literacy, education and healthcare than the all-powerful Land of Opportunity.

And funny how the US claims to be doing the right thing by imposing a disgusting embargo on Cuba while washing with money and weapons evil murderous regimes such as Augusto Pinochet's, Saddam Hussein's, Uzbekistan's or the Taliban's.

For that reason alone the EU should give all the support possible to Cuba... and Dubya can go fuck himself and fucking die.

Strictly speaking it was the other way round. Castro wanted to continue ties with the US. There was a period just after he came to power when a more intelligent US Foreign Policy could have brought Castro onto the US's side (in the same way left wing European government's prefered the US to the USSR) and possibly even had led to a democratic Cuba.

Instead the US Government listened to literal gangsters and both Democratic and Republican Presidents are now in a mess they cannot get out of.

i'm not castro's biggest fan, but you have to give him credit for sticking two fingers up to the u.s..........i've lost count how many times they've tried to assassinate him now........this is what i mean when i say human rights is a joke, mere political rhetoric to wield human sympathy and in turn justify military might......double standards is what the u.s. does best.

Cuba is the strategic key to the Caribbean. That's why the US tried to either take it over or install a favourable regime for so long. It's a defense thing.

    It's a defense thing.

could you elaborate on this more...are you trying to say that America needs defence from Cuba as if Cuba is a threat...

I really fear for the island because for all its faults and poverty it is still blissfully free of the faceless capitalist megacorporation culture that plagues other countries. I fear that when Castro goes, rather than monitoring the situation and perhaps allowing the UN to encourage a civilised transition, the US will invade and install a puppet "democratic" government- and of course, make Cuba a nice little holiday destination for Americans and fill it up with Disney and Universal Studios theme parks and exclusive golf clubs.

When you see the legions of salivating vultures waiting in Miami you just want to cry.

The only concern with Cuba was that any missiles launched from there were too close for the US to detect them and take them down in time.

But other than that Cuba hasn't got much geopolitical interest. It's not as if it was the only island to be found in the area...

No. I now you have, so you could perhaps confirm: is it full of Universal Studio and Dysney theme parks?

I can confirm that it is a third world nation rife with poverty.

Pity they picked the losing side during the Cold War.

Cigars are great though. Go down any back alley and you can buy hundreds of factory standard ones in boxes for a quarter of the price of the official shop.

    Isnt capitalism great. :D

well i'd say that's enough of a reason to want it, at the height of the cold war america was convinced cuba was getting ready to launch a missile strike..........that's still the only reason they won't attack overtly because cuba could hurt them.......who knows what will happen after he goes, people are constantly speculating about his health, i think he'll be around for a few more years yet just to spite the u.s........god help cuba when america rushes to bring in democracy.

Funny you mention cigars. Go to any border city in Canada and you will see thousands of Yanks queuing outside Cuban cigar shops- because of course Cuban cigars are illegal in the US, lest they're contaminated with 'communism' or something and everyone in America goes commie overnight.

Isn't the Land of the "Free" great? :D

Still, Cuban cigars are the best in the world.

So do you think it is reasonable to threaten citizens with jail if they buy products from a country the government doesn't approve of?

And do you think that the embargo extends to other dictatorships? Do you think there was an embargo on Chilean wine for instance when the biggest murdering fascist scumbag in the history of South America was in power there?

    "Land of the Free" indeed.

My, my, your virulent anti-Americanism is showing lamp boy!
The way it has castigated Cuba and made millions of people suffer for four decades while happily supporting (and in some cases, installing in power) brutal fascist dictators a million times bloodier than Castro simply beggars belief.
Castro is just an old Commie who has kept his people in slavery and poverty for decades - he should have been dealt with a long time ago!
The Soviets used him as a stooge in an attempt to blackmail the Americans - and talking about installing dictators, the Soviets were supreme masters at installing puppet Commie leaders all over Eastern Europe who had no compunction at killing their own people on the orders of the Kremlin. They kept their people under the most repressive Commie regimes, even building walls (Berlin) to keep their people in - if they tried to esacpe across the minefields and the wall, they were shot down like dogs! Welcome to Utopia my friend!
No one is suggesting that Castro's regime is a good one.
Oh really, how intelligent of you.
But the incredible obsession of the US with that little country and the appalling embargo it's applied (and the threats to countries that dare trade with Cuba) is completely disproportionate to the regime.
Not so, the people of Cuba would welcome a return to freedom and democracy. Its about time George W took a look at it.
Funny how ultra-poor Cubans still have better levels of literacy, education and healthcare than the all-powerful Land of Opportunity.
As Mark Twain once said, "there are lies, damn lies and statistics" so don't believe all you read!
And funny how the US claims to be doing the right thing by imposing a disgusting embargo on Cuba while washing with money and weapons evil murderous regimes such as Augusto Pinochet's, Saddam Hussein's, Uzbekistan's or the Taliban's.
Its time the US went in and freed the Cuban people, they're crying out for it. These good Roman Catholic people are being kept under the yoke of an evil God-less Commie regime. There are secret police on every street, people cannot trust their neighbours or friends, their living conditions are awful, the media is muzzled, and democracy is non-existent. Free the people they yearn to be free!
For that reason alone the EU should give all the support possible to Cuba... and Dubya can go fuck himself and fucking die.
The EU should support American action to free the people of Cuba as soon as possible.

It is reasonable. We are talking about "liars, thieves and murderers".The only difference appears to be the flags.

There must be "honour" among "liars, thieves and murderers".The CIA used to provide Kennedy with his cuban cigars, despite the embargo. That wasn`t long after Castro had been a buddy (a la Saddam).Daddy "Cunt" ;) was very much involved with all the goings-on to install the then revolutionary .

BTW your Chilean "mate" appears to have had friends in "high" places, the recently departed JP2."Pino" probably had his pinot blessed.

Spiders have nothing on the webs these "liars, thieves and murderers" weave.

Many people rush to Cuba’s defence and simply for the sake of disagreeing with and opposing America. I can’t think of a more childish and pathetic position. The Cuban regime is an undemocratic, dictatorial and tyrannous.

And Amnesty International hasn’t even been allowed to visit the country since 1988...Sounds pretty dodgy to me.

    China is communist isn't it?

nope...come to think of it neither is Cuba. Communism is (supposedly) the end result of socialist government that has deteriorated because it's no longer needed, it's a type of elevated anarchy where everyone’s needs are provided for.

China is more of capitalistic dictatorship these days. Cuba on the other hand is an oppressive Socialist government.
