Ethical dilema

Say a person is over 18 and they are suffering from anorexia. One day they decide to stop eating all together. They end up in hospital because they pass out from malnutrishion. The doctor says to her that if she does not eat then they wil have to forse feed her via a tube.
Now this girl is over 18 so she has the right to refuse treatment, but then the docter has the responsibillity to keep this girl alive. You could argue that she is not in a stable frame of mind to make the desicion for herself, but then she could later on sue the hospital for going agaisnt her wishes.
If you were that docter what would you do?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

I think the general procedure is to wait untill the person passes out/blacks out, then they can give treatment.

If they are able to refuse treatment then they have the right not to recieve it.

Section her under the mental health act then force feed her.
I'm not having someone die on me just because they want to, especially if they are suffering from a condition that can be treated.
Once she's feeling fitter I'll refer her to an agency that can help.

No but the doctor has a duty of care. In this instance the option is legal.

If the person is serious then they can have a "living will".

Usually with anorexia though it isn't a wish to die, is it?

Of course the doctor has a duty of care, and when the woman/man has passed out then they give treatment. I thought thats how it worked.

It certainly worked that way when a bloke I knew took an overdose. He didnt want to go in the ambulance, they waited till he passed out then took him.

But do they really strap people down and shove a tube down their throat?

as whowhere says the Mental Health Act could be used, but...

Healthcare Ethics is the reasoned examination of moral issues relating to health, life and death. The focus of healthcare ethics is the worth and dignity of each patient, health care decision-making and the responsibilities of care providers, the patient, the patient’s family and significant others.

so i don't think it is clear cut

if I was the doctor I would be involving all those concerned, including the psych and then work through the difficult balance of consent, paternalism, duty of care and so on.

btw, this sounds like the archers, so it will be interesting to hear what they do...

Well certainly, but she's such an annoying person I hope she just snuffs it and we can go back to the others.

Oh definately, either that or someone should kill her.

Who's that old woman who's always cracking on to young men, I can never remember her name, she's a bit scary.

You should listen to The Archers then shouldnt you.

Just one of the many reasons Radio Four is the best broadcast medium of them all by a large margin.

My dad listens to radio 4, he's 60.
Though to be fair, just a minute and other comedy is most amusing.

If she don't want to have it done it's her loss. The doctor will get blamed not matter what goes wrong.

If I want to listen to a cracking record then I'll put it on myself. Anyway, everyone knows Hardcore reached perfection in 1995.
