Fashion/Brand names/Social class.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Hanging down the pub tonight with my mates we got into a conversation about brand names..

Lately one of my mates has lately been buying all clothes with the Nike TN brand on it.. Now his hat was 15.. top was 20 and etc.. Now I ask him why he brought this and why he spends so much on Clothes with a small 2cm2 brand on it and he says.. because it makes me cool..

Is this really what social classes have come to.. If you don't pay £120 for a pair of Nike air your not cool.. Is coolness come down to what you wear and not who the person is..

Why does what clothes you wear matter, I've seen a top.. the same as my mates for £10 cheaper than this.. same quality.. only thing missing is a 2cm 2 logo.. does it really matter if you have a logo.. does it really make you "COOL"..

Sorry.. I'm just curious. I don’t mean to offend people by it.

So what are your view on Commercialism and Big brand names?

He sounds like he dresses like a rude boy or what ever you want to call them.

To answer your question, then yes im afraid its true that what you wear makes you cool if your a rude boy anyway. Everyone of these people has to own a pair of TN trainers and a TN 2 tone hat.

Its kinda sad really because i was like that about 6 months ago  . Then i realised its not what i am so iv changed to the normal jeans and tshirt trendy guy.

But yeh im afraid thats what happens in some social classes

That has nothing to do with social class.

Nope, nothing to do with class. I know someone who's definitely not as well off as I am but spends ALL their money on branded clothing. Subsequently, they're always wearing the same thing because they can't afford many branded clothes.

I've worked in River Island for nearly 3 years and hence all my clothes come from there. They're reasonably priced, especially on discount, highstreet clothes of decent quality. I also like Etam & Next. Can't stand Topshop though - their quality seems to be kinda poor for the price and everyone my age (19) shops there and hence everyone's wearing the same stuff!

wow, not £20 for a top. surely not.

i'd hardly call wearing nike making a statement about your social class!

Aslong as something looks good, and i like it i'll wear it, usually its cheaper the better! Although i suppose i do like some expensive brands

it's nothing at all to do with social class, and everything to do with personal taste, and sometimes what all your mates are wearing.

I wear what I want to - these people who wear a brand just because its 'cool' are clearly attention seeking morons.

I wear what I want to, If its a good fit and looks decent I'll wear it.

    Well... My point is..

If you saw a top for £20 and the same one for £5 but the only diffrence was a Nike logo.. would you buy it..

Why does it matter what you wear?? Why does having a Nike logo.. or puma.. or addidas matter to people...

I'd buy the £5 one. Whats the point of wasting £15? All these 'cool doods' with their labels frustrate me greatly.

I could have bought the new Leeds shirt for £40 from an official shop, but I chose to buy it from another shop, where the exact same shirt (no fakes or anything) cost £18 LESS. Does this make me any less of a fan? There is NO difference between the shirts.

If the quality, stlye etc was exactly the same, and the only actual real diference was the logo, then I'd buy the £5 one! Most people would. Pffft, who wants a top with Nike on it anyway? Ya wanna get some real designer stuffs.

Yea.. my point excatly.. I'd buy the cheaper one.. No diffrence because of one tiny logo..

Jst I agree with you.. Buying a cheaper version doesn't make you less of a fan.. make you a smart sensible fan..

I'd buy cheaper clothes.. It seems that the new nike Craze is ruleing my mates life.. everything revolves around this stuff..

The whole Nike thing usually does have to do with social classes though. Seeing as only neds wear sports clothes to the pub etc., and 99% of the time neds come from a poor background and area, and usually have a poor upbringing due to this.

    Clothes make the man, innit.

People judge you on what you wear - having style makes you look better, makes you appear more attractive to the opposite sex, can greatly improve your chances at job interviews, can gain you entry into clubs, and makes people notice you.

Maybe you should try it sometime.

All very well and good, but for actual designer and high street designer (ie, not the kiddie, neddy shite you're talking about) clothes the difference in stlye between each of the labels varies greatly. Most high street designer stuff has no visible logos anyway, so it's not about what label it is, it's about the style of the clothes, and with designer stuff the style is usually more unusual, or just plain nicer.

I wouldnt mind buyin cheaper versions of clothes if they wernt so cheaply made! lIKe i spent £35 on a pair of jeans 20 months ago. Still are alrite. Where as i bought a cheapy pair as they looked good and i thought why not try cheapy clothes again. As all my clothes are brands. They fell apart after 4 months.
That is why i buy brand name clothes. Cos they are made well.

    interesting experiment i just did.

i looked at the label of my expensive whistles jeans (ok, so i got them for 3.99 down the charity shop, but they go for £100+ new). guess what it says on the label? made in hong kong.

then i looked at my mum's cheap supermarket brand jeans, and guess what it said? made in hong kong.

what this means as far as quality, is that they are all made in the same factories. the workers are paid the same. the only difference is the amount of profit the company skims off.

then i looked on the label of my other half's cheapy generic skate jeans, and guess what it said? made in the UK.

so if these jeans were made in the UK, the workers must have been paid at least the current minimum wage. doesn't mean they're necessarily made better, but at least they weren't made up by some poor kid from hong kong earning about £1 a week. note to people with a conscience - buy these jeans.

there is a difference in design though. miss sixty jeans, for example tend to flatter young figures way more than asda jeans, for example. this is the reason a lot of people will spend a bit more money on things like jeans and jackets, for which fit is important. but that doesn't mean that the more expensive the better, necessarily. miss sixty might fit someone fantastically. but another person might look and feel better in new look.

But style is personal. My idea of style is 'classic' style - wearing clothes that will take you from one season to the next without dating. Your idea of style may be different.

I dont care!its nothing to do with me how much someone earns. Look after no.1 etc.
But could the material be better or stronger?

denim's denim, pretty much. even cheap denim is tough as old boots.

you might find that designer jeans have more fancy washes or hand-distressed detailing, but if anything, that would make the fabric weaker.

Yeah, so someone having your idea of style would make them look better to you, correct?

Anyway, if you think someone looks good in 'classic' style, you're in the minority.

When are two tops ever the same minus the logo though? They're not, your point's invalid, STFU :)

It's worth spending more money for better quality, e.g. a top from select for £10 vs a top from Next for £20 would be well worth the extra tenner in that it'll last more than one wash. But I only ever buy highstreet. RI all the way!

I dont wear labals full stop. I have one pair of labal trainers and thats cos they are water proof and my mum made me buy them when i was going to be on a navy ship doing training and she thought it would be wet everywhere:rolleyes:
I think labels are ok, their just not for me. What i object to is children wearing them. I mean whats the point in buying a £20 top and £30 trainers for a kid when they are just going to grow out of them in what? 2 months! Its a waste of money.

I buy everything from H&M....I mean everything! Expect shoes and trainers...but if they did I'd buy em!

Now H&M is cheap as shit, but not once has it bothered me wearing cheap clothes.......

Coolness comes from within. You're cool if you're fun to be around, respected, sometimes funny. But coolness is determined by the person who thinks you're cool. Now some people think im cool, other's think im a pretty boy, others think im an outspoken shit.
