Lots of fruit, and bran-type cereals. So Alpen and Meusli and that kinda stuff.

Anything else? Anything that I should be avoiding?

Some people react to dairy, maybe see how it works cutting down for a while.

Surely your doctor gave you some advice?

Try reading up about it in books/internet.

I'm with Lucifer Devil on this one - why didn't your GP give you some advice? They should also refer you to a dietitian or a specialist who will offer personalised advice. In the mean time though they really should have asked if you have any questions!

    Some very useful info

sadly a lot of GPs (and also all the specialists i've seen) have seemed to think that it's 'only IBS' and doesn't really need much discussion.

they say it's only IBS, you're not dying, bye now. and you think, well that's all very well, but i'm still losing more weight than is healthy and spending most of my life on the toilet.

and because it's kind of an embarrassing problem, people don't speak out. and because people don't speak out, doctors don't really care.

but yeah. i've found that eating certain things can set it off. mine are dairy and wheat, and it's especially bad in the morning. if you're not getting enough fibre, you can buy this stuff called fybogel from the chemists, which is foul, but keeps everything in working order. if you have a lot of pain or bloating, you doctor can prescribe you things to help with it. and if you have attacks of diarrhea or constipation, over the counter drugs work well.

it's a matter of trial and error.

My doctors were crap when they told me i had it. I spent two years going back and forth getting given the same tablets i'd already tried, even though i told them they didn't work and getting told "well just try them again".

I found aloe vera gel helped a little but the main thing that really did aggravate the condition was the combined pill. I came off that two years ago and while i still have ibs i'm no way near as bad.

I find eating fibre makes me worse but it's different for each person. Mine was very much trial and error and finding out what sets off an attack. Fried food, too much fibre or junk food tend to be really bad triggers.

Some people find alcohol really sets them off, i find the opposite, it seems to calm mine down.
