Some very useful info
sadly a lot of GPs (and also all the specialists i've seen) have seemed to think that it's 'only IBS' and doesn't really need much discussion.
they say it's only IBS, you're not dying, bye now. and you think, well that's all very well, but i'm still losing more weight than is healthy and spending most of my life on the toilet.
and because it's kind of an embarrassing problem, people don't speak out. and because people don't speak out, doctors don't really care.
but yeah. i've found that eating certain things can set it off. mine are dairy and wheat, and it's especially bad in the morning. if you're not getting enough fibre, you can buy this stuff called fybogel from the chemists, which is foul, but keeps everything in working order. if you have a lot of pain or bloating, you doctor can prescribe you things to help with it. and if you have attacks of diarrhea or constipation, over the counter drugs work well.
it's a matter of trial and error.
I have cut down on dairy i have non-dairy butter on two rivita a day and that has helped me so much,
if you want other peopls's advice who have ibs go here

they have a website and chat forum there that is really helpful.

IBS factsheet
I found aloe vera gel helped a little but the main thing that really did aggravate the condition was the combined pill. I came off that two years ago and while i still have ibs i'm no way near as bad.
I find eating fibre makes me worse but it's different for each person. Mine was very much trial and error and finding out what sets off an attack. Fried food, too much fibre or junk food tend to be really bad triggers.
Some people find alcohol really sets them off, i find the opposite, it seems to calm mine down.
