shot the Battyboy

Why are they so Homophobic in Jamaica,

All raga artists got a battyboy die song; any party playing ragga will have at least one more like a few songs supporting the virtues of violence towards Homosexuals

Theres a lot of places where they hate gays but they don’t sing about it, there isn’t always at least 1 song in the chart regarding it is there

Eg Texas, where gays are hated, Romania where it was against the Law until the EU told them to change it if they have any change of joining, but no songs about it, they prefer to pretend it dosnt exsist,,,

Does anybody care to suggest why this is.

I love reggae and dancehall, but that's one thing about it that I hate. Not all artists are slack, but a lot are.
    Its not on IMO.

I think the act of homosexuality is illegal in Jamaica, I might be wrong though.

Its a culture thing, 'black' male culture has this very overtly masculine thing going on, it can be seen here and in the US too, and obviously homosexuality doesnt fit with that. Concerning really because it goes hand in hand with the extreme violence that can be part of young black culture, especially in Jamaica.

It is illegal in Jamaica. There are all sorts of reasons, religion being one. I was trying to find some sociological/cultural analysis of why homophobia seems to be rooted in a lot of black culture and I couldn't find any. My own feelings are that it could be to do with history of repression and the de-masculanisation of black men by western apartheid and slave owners, calling them "boy" and depriving them of liberty and the ability to provide for their families etc. It could be a reaction against that. These are just my thoughts on the subject though.

Why are they so Homophobic in Jamaica,

It's a different culture. Why should they change?

In my experience most blacks are homophobic, be they African or West Indians. I don't know why!

Because it's infringing on people's rights to a loving and intimate relationship.

And we used to have slavery why should we have changed,

Theres terrrable abuse that goes on there towards gays outright murder, the polce do nothing,

There was the first ever gay pride march planned in Jamaca it was canceled because of a sudden rise in sales of machete's just before the march.

Who also should change some of their laws imo. Religion is no excuse to enforce hatred on any minority.

Murder of gays shouldn't be tolerated but why look down on a culture that doesn't share your sensibilities?

The basis of the right to love another human being? It strikes me that it's a basic human right, although there's no kind of law saying as such.

Pricisely. It's MORAL RIGHT, not a legal right.

    Damn you got there first...

But I would also add the Church of England too, bearing in mind lukesh's apparent patriotism...

Yes, but it's legally wrong to incite hate crimes in the ways that these lyrics do.

Look up Maslow's heirarchy of needs... Shouldn't we have the right to good mental health ? There must be something there stating that...

As I said, moral rights not legal rights.

Why not? Our concept of what is legal or not is based entirely on morality.

People have the right to think what they like, but when that impinges on other people's rights to live their lives, then its wrong.
Aren't you always going on about people's rights to freedom?

The point is to learn what a moral and legal right is.

A 'right to love' is only a moral right. I know of no country in the world that recognises a right to love.

Its a basic human emotion that we are all capable of. To deny it is to deny basic humanity. Thats the problem I have with your views - you don't seem to recognise that people have emotions.
    I find that quite disturbing.
