discriminatory practice

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Shouldn't anti discriminatory legislation in the workplace be repealed?

If I own a business, then why can't I exclude blacks, gays, the disabled, women, etc. from working there?

in practice yeh it should be allowed, as people can choose who they employ, BUT it reinforces peoples prejudices and doesnt allow an oppurtunity to prove the prejudiced people wrong aobut their beliefs

IMHO i dont believe in discrimination cause even if meant in a good way, ie positive discrimination theres always someone who loses out

like not many professions get done for discrimination upon sexual preference, and the ones that do like the church etc have some (if bad) reason 2 get away with it, but lots of businesses are known to emply openly gay people cause they're apparently better communicator, which really is just stupid and prejudice againt heterosexuals

It isn't fair that someone should miss out on a position in what could be a fantastic job at a successful company.

Soul Liber, when you open your business and get things going, can I have the right to campaign against you, spit in your direction in the street and leave bags of flaming shit in your doorstep?

I should have the right to, I'm not hurting you by doing it, am I?

Non sequitur. Not allowing a gay to work in your company doesn't violate his or her right to person and property.

Depends on whether you believe in society or not.

Yes it is. Without a job you can't live, eat etc.
And there's more to life than what you own. What about friendship, love, compassion etc?

Ok then. So I'm a black man, and I have a university degree in engineering. However, all the companies I apply to have a anti-black working policy which means I can't work in these companies as an engineer. The only job I can get is in a burger bar, earning minimum wage, with a wife and 2 kids to support. This means I can only buy the cheapest of products, struggle to keep a roof over my head. If on the other hand I was a white male with the same qualifiocations, applying to the same companies, I would get the job and then have a great lifestyle. And this is ok how?

Who says all companies would discriminate? Some would, but one could argue that they would lose out on the best employees.

How is it inconceivable garbage? America in the early part of the 2oth century and even earlier? Apartheid in South Africa? These situations did happen. And if prejudice was so widespread, who knows what would happen? A libertarian society would allow this prejudice without any qualms....

    Your example is inconceivable garbage

We are in none of places you mention

Companies recruit those deemed suitable and are unlikely to have a colour bar

Young brits don't like engineering., courses are full of overseas students

a colour bar would make no economic sense

Not physical damage, but perhaps mental. Ok that was partially a joke, what with the flaming shit bags ect... what I meant was that then if somebody campaigned against that business?

Would that be violating your rights to make money and run a business? Especially if the campaign was effective.

If too many people prevented black people or certain groups from working in their place, would that not create ghettos?

Well, it didn't make economic sense in America, they did it. And if sole liber's comments were enforced, what would there be to stop any discrimination of any kind? None. But I mean thjat's ok to discriminate against people if they're different to us, isn't it? And what you talking about, young brits don't like engineering? University applications for engineering courses was up 6% over the last 10 years here

Thats your opinion, fact bears out that this is not the case and never has.

I think also that you will find that most people are happy with this to some extent, as can be seen on this post and the link form ladymuck.........

No, instead it taxes its citizens and engages in foreign wars that make us enemies in the world.

Is that you're whole argument for paying taxes, because it's used for wars?

I'm against taxation because it deprives people of their property.

A PERSON THEMSELVES earns their money; the state shouldn't forcibly take a proportion of it.

It deprives people of their money to provide other services that they require. Unless you're a hermit...
