The Socialists are in though not by a massive majority. Apparently they will probably try to get Spain back to a better aliance with France, totally not what Blair and Bush will want!

They're actually right wing. The Partido Socialista are the left wing party (as the name suggests) and my Spanish teacher assures me they are far more socialist than Labour. Which is not a challenge. ¡España ha visto la luz! lol

Edited to add: Forgot to explain that the P.S. won.
The Socialists won 43% of the vote while the centre-right Popular Party has garnered 38%, reports say.
See BBC News for the full story.

Could be interesting tidings for the EU defense initiative.

So Al, are you going to pop back to Madrid to help Mr. Aznar pack his things? ;)

With gusto Clan, with gusto! :)

I've spoken with my family and they're all very happy. This is the first time many people have been able to smile in the last 4 days.

Before the attacks the PP had a very sizeable majority in all the polls. The importance of this PSOE victory cannot be overestimated.

Out go the lying, Franco-loving, extremely sinister little fascists. Oh yes!

You have no idea how corrupt and manipulative that lot was... makes the Republican neo-cons look like a beacon of honesty and transparency. I'm not kidding...

My family had to get their news from foreign websites as those bastards controlled every TV station and most of the press and radio. It was only yesterday when Al Qaida was really mentioned a bit on the Spanish media (despite being mentioned right away in the rest of the world). The bastards tried to push the ETA hypothesis all the way so it wouldn't damage its re-election chances. Even this morning the more right wing papers were still saying "it was ETA".

It has actually emerged that within hours of the attacks the government issued orders to all embassies demanding they spread the word ETA was definitively to blame for this.

But as it sometimes happens, the truth emerged. Yesterday people started protesting against the official line and incredibly, the public organised spontaneous demonstrations outside PP offices across the country by text message and internet forum (first time it happens I think). By the evening there was mass discontent and the beginning of the end of those cunts was in sight.

Oh how must Tony Bliar be shitting himself right now! :D

He must be concerned but if there's no UK outrage between now + next election he'll romp home, no stirrings here apart from demos by the usual suspects (this w/e so I hear!)

Nah. Can't see too many people voting for Michael Howard, and the Rt Hon Member for Have I Got News For You doesn't get enough support nationally.

As for the Spanish result being good, I would have agreed. Until, that is, I heard a Radio Five report coming directly from the Socialists HQ. Apparently they were playing Lionel Ritchie songs on a permanent loop.

Sorry, but that's just wrong

At least the Spanish socialists can dance. Do you remember that footage of John Prescott and other Labour ministers "dancing" and attempting to look like they were having a ball during election night victory? It was pretty disturbing... :D

Yes you are right that Blair has the advantage that the main opposition party has a vampire for a leader and that they were just as much in favour of the war as the government. However many Labour supporters will just simply stay away or vote for small parties and whereas the Tories might not get many extra votes Labour will be losing droves of them.

And more importantly the "Coalition of the Killing" has lost its third biggest member and left Blair rather exposed in Europe.

It was highly amusing to read the editorials in the Scum and the Torygraph today. You could make a lot of wine with so many sour grapes. :D

And it was also amusing (I don't want to think about it much or it'd be infuriating instead, given the supreme levels of fucking ignorance displayed) to visit military.wank and viewing the predictable responses to the election result.

    Oh dear oh dear...

Makes you wonder about the point of keeping Tony when a supposedly Socialist leader sees the election of another Socialist leader as a negative.

the madness of modern politics. if bush gets kicked out and the democrats get in ...tony is so tied with bush's republicans that he will be left high and dry there as well.
we seem to be loosing our way ...
IF ...islamic bombs can influence european elections so swiftly and completely ...god help us.

If it even was Islamic bombs, though thats what the "official" verdict will likely determine. The overall effect of it though is bigger than just the nature of the Spanish leadership but the entire strategic agenda of the EU. The upshot for neo-cons is that it will speed up the debate for the installation of tougher "homeland security" mechanisms over here as well which will solidify the PNAC agenda further even should we have another stopgap presidency before they resume again.

i am getting doubtful that there will even be the charade of an election in america.
the possibilities of suspending elections in america looks very real to me. it's getting quite scary this 21st century agenda ...

Nah i think the likely scenario is that those who wield the real power behind the scenes including our Co-President can afford to lose and connive to undermine and emasculate a Kerry Presidency with endless harrassment such as was done to impede and corale Clinton's policy choices to appease neo-con interests.

4 or even 8 years of Kerry is also a good cooling off time to get the masses focussed on something else and to forget about the heavy impingments to our constitutional liberties and protections which will not just go away but will be not talked about and perhaps papered over somewhat. Thus without fully eradicating these monstrosities of police statism they know they can come back from their cushy retirements and directorships under some perhaps up coming Bush or whatever young turk they put forward at that time.

Its better for these guys if the president does take the brunt of the blame so they can slip out the back door. But the foxes know the way back to the henhouse when the time is right.

    The feeling is mutual Clan.

Good old Zapatero (Spanish for shoemaker by the way) doesn't like to beat about the bush- no pun intended. He's publicly declared he doesn't like Dubya and he wishes him to lose the November election. Since being elected barely 24 hours ago he's reconfirmed Spanish troops will be withdrawn, has repeated claims that "the war on Iraq was a disaster and the subsequent occupation is a disaster" and has asked Bush and Blair to reflect carefully on events of the last year.

It is well known that Zapatero and his party PSOE don't have a lot of time for New Labour anyway. Blair & co are about as left wing as Maggie Thatcher and considered traitors to the European left movement. And why shouldn't they be?

    Interesting times lie ahead. :)

Me too. And I am still learning it!
Ask me to construct a sentance and I'll be clueless. But my advantage is that I follow up quickly during conversations and when listening, and have a better pronounciation than most of the class, which gives me a higher grade than I deserve. I won't complain.

Either way, shoes and sale are always good words to know.

Funnily enough the two words are found together very often.

Which delights the girlfriend, who fills our luggage with new yet reasonably priced shoes every time I take her to Madrid.

My language skills have got me through three different trips to Spain so far. I can count up to six also, courtesy of Sesame Street  I shall remember that phrase, just hope I don't get arrested as I haven't a clue what it means
