youth work

toffuna101toffuna101 Posts: 2,058 Boards Champion
so like ive said in the update post i wanted to volunteer and potentially work for services for young people which is basically a youth organisation for 11-17 year olds (up to 25 with SEND and im SEND so luckily i qualify for that). i want to volunteer for them when im 18 and work for services for young people when im 19. so that means ill have one years worth of experience. im also saying this because ill hopefully finish college at 19 (well, unless if i dropout again. but realistically i dont want that because i want to actually get a level 3 qualification). for more context i basically dropped out of sixth form for a multitude of reasons. i want to volunteer and work for services for young people because i have youth workers that have aspired me to actually want to volunteer and work for them. theyre really nice too. hopefully everything goes to plan because i can change my mind pretty easily. but hey, if it doesnt i have the probation service to fall back on as a back-up career. i can work for them i suppose as a probation officer or a probation services officer. so yeah. let me know what you think about all of this.

It sounds like a great plan. Volunteering and working with young people is a great goal, and having a backup plan is smart. You're taking positive steps, so keep going you're on the right track.

    hey @toffuna101 🙂

wishing you all the luck with your goals, i’m sure you would be amazing at youth work too!

it’s really cool to hear of someone else with the same goals as me too, as i really want to do youth work as well and for similar reasons too! i went back to college to do level 3 health & social care so as i can go to uni to study community youth work as well as completing my ocn level 2 youth work qualification (that is the minimum requirement to get into any youth work job in northern ireland!) which has been really good plus volunteering as well - i’ve volunteered in a primary school on a programme for children with additional needs and also volunteer with a helpline too and both of those have given me amazing experience for sure - i now also work as a support worker, specifically with young people, which is incredible too, and not something i had really considered before either!

it’s also really good you have a back up option too just in case <3

    thanks @Redemption
@shannon_164 yeah its good to hear that someone else on here wants to work for a youth organisation too although i dont want to get into uni and stuff like that id like to eventually become a youth support worker which is one step below a youth worker but they are both just as equally as important. though id have to get a day job since their hours are 5, 7.5 or 10 hours a week at the most. its good to hear that youre getting experience both in volunteering for helplines and at a primary school. i actually volunteered at a library once for a couple of hours a day for two days and it was a good starter for what's to come. furthermore im doing work shadowing at my school library for one hour a day five days a week so that will be important when working with young people.

Hey @toffuna101 , thanks so much for sharing this with us!!

This sounds like an amazing idea and plan, and so exciting that you're interested in getting into youth work too :star: We're all here rooting you on in your journey and are here to support you as you complete your level 3 qualification too!

I hear you saying that you don't want to change your mind again or to dropout. I wonder what kind of support you might find helpful in achieving these goals? Would there be anything or anyone you can think of that can help you in feeling confident in your studies day-to-day?

Wishing you the very best with this!

i think talking to people about it definitely helps, especially on childline and the mix. i can also talk to people that ive formed good rapports in like youth workers or my favourite teacher at school before i go onto college in september. im still technically a student at the school but ive dropped out of education if that makes sense. this is because i do work shadowing at school in my school library. i think watching people study definitely boosts my motivation to study too because theyre also sacrificing their free time to earn a qualification if that makes sense. @Sian321

@toffuna101 , that definitely makes sense, and I'm so pleased to hear that talking here at The Mix and Childline too has been helpful.

It sounds like you've been putting a lot of thought into your next-steps and reaching out for support. We will continue to root for you! :star:

i forgot to mention that i used to be a student library assistant from september of 2019 to july of 2022 so i have that three years worth of work experience too to help me become a volunteer and a youth support worker

Hey @toffuna101, just wanted to chime in and say that this is a lovely idea! Aiming to finish your studies is a good idea, and it's really nice that you want to work in young peoples' services! It's an amazing feeling to be inspired by people in our lives, and I can hear how your experience with youth workers has helped to shape that path.

It sounds like you're talking to people about this which is a good move so you can find out about useful information and opportunities. Having a back-up option is a useful tool to have in case you need it. It sounds like you have a good plan overall - fingers crossed that things go your way, we're rooting for you! :)
