I don't know if this has been already done already via the artworks posted on TheMix's social media but recently I have started to get back into reading and researching zines. I feel like I wanted to give a little pitch on zines and why TheMix should actually have their own digital zine!.
What are zines?
Well zines are actually amazing little infographic books that can be big or even small enough to fit into a pocket of jacket!. I know right the size of a zine can depend on how content there is in one. However, moving on from size then gets into the history of zines and zine making.
If I remember correctly zines stem from punk/goth/rock subculture during the 70's, 80's and 90's. They are started off as a way to inform the public about what was going on in the world as well as speaking up for and addressing human rights and protesting about unspoken community's. Zines became very very popular during the riot girll movement in the 90's as a way of addressing feminism and equal rights for all.Zines are a way of ampilifying voices and zines are still used to this day and are being made as we speak.
So now we got a bit of history on zines what are actually inside them?
Well funny you asked that as a zine will normally have a subject or theme. The theme or subject could be anything at all to even something very topical and important. Then comes the designing, planning and laying it out. Roughly a small zine will normally have four to eight pages of content inside which can include poetry, artwork, illustration, cut outs from magazines. However some zines can even be mini versions of a magazine so will have more pages. It depends on how much you want your readers to read and digest the info. How you design the layout is entirely up to you and it can be as busy or as a minimalist as you like!.
After designing your zine, you need to find a way of distrubuting them out to the world!. Well according to my research online it is said you may need to make a master copy one so you know the layout. Normally what happens is that once you have assemble your zine and all the pages, you will need to ideally photocopy them all together and staple them so that you have multiple copies of the zines to hand out or leave. Sometimes if its a digital zine your making you can scan in the pages onto a computer and then crop and edit the pages to your liking and then print out how many you need.
After that you will have your own of zines to hand out or even leave in places for the public to read and learn!.
Now we know about zines, why do you believe that TheMix should have its own zine?
I feel like personally zines are constantly evolving over time and are becoming much more popular once again by the young community of people re-inventing them. I personally think that TheMix would actually benefit very greatly from having an annual zine or mini magazine which can highlight important topics and themes for each month. How it would work is that it would conicide with the social media art posts and what is being discussed on socials. The zine would be digital as I feel like having to photocopy lots of paper would be very time consuming and having a digital output is more eco friendly and sustainable. It could be posted on here as well as on social. I feel like a zine would be a great way of giving out lots of information but shortened and done in a quick and sharp way. I feel like a lot of young people would engage more with TheMix's content too. There could even be mini quizzes or activities in each one for the month i.e a mindful activity to try out.
Overall, I'd loved to see what others think on here or even if they have any ideas for topics or themes that TheMix could explore if the zine was an option. . Also I would even love it if anyone was inspired by this thread and decided to go out and make their own because it can be quite a rewarding and fun experience. I tried making one before but I never got round to finishing it. It was inspired by the book 'Moxie'.

if anyone does feel inspired to make one I'd love to see what people can come up with for it 😊
@TheMix
I just thought it was something different and maybe even a breakthrough possibly idk
I'd loved to hear what the teams definitely think of it though @Aife. I know my idea for it needs to have more refining and figuring out how it would per month. I feel like collaborating with others on this would be great. I am also more than happy to start one up too as I am mostly free at the moment and not too busy.
