Hi I'm Sam (she/her) and I'm new to the Mix.

I'm a student currently studying Social Sciences including Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, History, Politics and Research Issues. I'm extremely passionate about Psychology and hope to study it at University next year by articulation to year 2. In particular, I'm extremely passionate and interested in mental health as it has been something I have struggled with in the past, and would like to help others similar to myself as I find this very rewarding. I'm also a young carer for my brother.

I love cats, Grey's Anatomy, reading (including all of Alice Oseman's books!), and listening to music. I currently volunteer at a local bookshop and I also volunteered at a community larder until it's closure earlier this year.

I also have a cat called Vada who is very cute! 🐈

Hi @lunarcat522 Vada is so pretty and stunning. I really want a cat now :). Hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. It sounds like you got some lovely hobbies. Speaking of Alice Oesman I got Heartstopper volume 1 and Loveless and Solitare but I haven't read them yet but I'm hoping too at some point. <3

@Xee I love Solitaire and Loveless too! They're probably my favourite Alice Oseman books. Have you watched season 2 of Heartstopper on Netflix? It's really good. I'm not usually into anything romance, especially in books but Alice is so talented, I really enjoy her work.

I'm currently doing a HND which is just above A levels I think? It's equivalent to Year 1 and 2 of university but I'm doing this course at a college. I did my Highers last year which is the same sort of level as A levels I think? Sociology is really interesting, there's a lot of theories. I find it quite difficult initially to grasp concepts in it but I do enjoy it. We've covered different takes on what influences society whether it's social structures (education, work etc) or if it's individuals that then influence these things, as well as studies. I have no idea what criminology is like as we only get to do it starting this year but I'm looking forward to it. We've been told for our course it will be quite theory heavy so I'm assuming there will be stuff like labelling theory possibly covered. We start in September.

Springpod is quite a good website for exploring different subjects, they have 'subject spotlights' which are essentially tasters of what degrees in various subjects might cover/look like. There's some in criminology that are quite good.

Honestly my music taste changes a lot but I currently like some Conan Grey, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Wolf Alice. My favourite songs at the moment are probably Wonderland -Taylor Swift and The Beach -Wolf Alice.

@Amy22 I absolutely love Solitaire and Loveless because of how much I relate to each of them! I'm hoping to listen to Solitaire on audiobook at some point as I think Jenny Walser has recorded a cover and she is Tori in the TV series of Heartstopper.

If there's anything at all we can do to help whilst you figure it all out, please do not hesitate to give us a shout and we'll do what we can to help. P.S. I also love heartstopper and it was a binge-watcher series for me a couple of weekends ago :p

YOU SEEM SO COOL I LOVE YOUR MUSIC TASTE OMG also I've been to a conan gray concert and I got tickets to the eras tour 😎✌️

I haven't watched s2 heartstopper because if I'm honest I didn't finish s1...I just got really depressed watching it because it made me feel super single 😭 Which doesn't make sense because I'm more than happy to read romance, just not watch it.

Wait that's so cool I've literally never heard of a HDN. I would look into it now you've said that but it might be a bit too late. Wait can you go to uni with a HDN? Like do unis accept that? About finding it difficult to grasp concepts... that's what makes it so fun!! It's so interesting compared to something like maths where the concept you have to grasp is just numbers and letters and logical steps to solve a problem. And thanks, I'll check out springpod :)

    I hope you're having a wonderful sunday!!

Thanks! Honestly it's weird I've never been seen as cool haha! I get what you mean with heartstopper, Isaac is a character I really relate to as I'm aroace so it made me super happy seeing that representation on screen. Hope you enjoy the eras tour I'm sure it will be great!

It's interesting that you can read romance but struggle to watch it, I'm the opposite, it all seems the same when it's on paper! My only exception is Heartstopper but I guess it's a bit different because they're graphic novels.

Yeah HND's are higher national diplomas (level 8) that are often offered at colleges and sometimes Uni's I think (but I haven't really looked into it). It's equivalent to Year 1 and 2 of University so often you can articulate to year 2 (sometimes year 3 at uni) after completing it. Often there's agreements made with colleges and universities as they will look at the content covered to work out the best pathways.

    https://scqf.org.uk/about-the-framework/interactive-framework/

You can also do HNC's which are Higher national certificates (level 7) where after completion you could go on to year 1 of university or do a HND. There are lots of different ones out there, I'm doing Social Sciences but my friend is doing Film and TV!

I did a HND because I had really poor mental health at school and HND's only needed 2 passes at Higher which I think is equivalent to A-levels...? I ended up leaving with 4 highers but it's a really good pathway as it taught me how to reference for different subjects e.g. Harvard referencing for sociology and most subjects really, APA for psychology.

It ended up being a really good stepping stone for me as my confidence has increased hugely.

hi @lunarcat522 ! I am currently studying psychology at university and am really enjoying it! I also love watching greys anatomy!! I was wondering if you had a favourite episode or storyline?

Hii @lunarcat522 ! Welcome to the Mix <3 I have graduated from Psychology, and I'm also ery very very passionate about it too! Have you thought what would you like to do with a degree in psych?

    Take care :3

@Katie12 I'm not sure I really enjoyed Jo's storyline and also Amelia. I'm not sure if you've watched private practice but it's a spin off of Grey's anatomy and focuses more on Amelia and Addison. I always like the episodes where they cover mental health issues like with Jo, Levi, Miranda and Andrew Deluca. I always think it's really insightful.

@vicky_zin I'm not too sure, I was considering becoming a therapist but that needs a lot of mental/emotional strength. I'm thinking possibly going the full way to get a doctorate and then go into research as I think that's something I'd really enjoy. To be honest I just want to be able to go into something where I can help people.

@lunarcat522 absolutely loveee Greys and PP - Addison, Jo and Amelia hold my heart <3 I've rewatched it many times but keep seeing Tiktoks of edits, so I think that's the best excuse just to watch it again :D

@Emma_ I'd love to rewatch it but there's so much that goes on so I think I'll just patiently wait for season 20!

Yes! I really can't believe it's still going. Personally I think the best series were 7-11 so I often just rewatch those and then season 3-6 of Private Practice! I also loveee all of Station 19

Fair enough, for some reason I struggled to get into Station 19 but I know a lot of people love it! I wish Private Practice had more seasons.
