****** ? Fatty? Retard? what's the difference?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Ever noticed how it's so frowned upon to call a person a name reguarding their skin colour, yet it's 'funny' to make fun of someone reguarding their weight or the way they dress?

I mean, it'd hurt someone to call them a name reguarding their ethnicity, but it'd hurt just as bad to call someone a name because of their weight.

What do you guys think?

oh but it is frowned upon to make fun of obese people. look at the multitude of politically correct terms for fat/overwieght.

the people that make fun of obese people are often the same people that are racists. certainly in my social groups, fat people aren't outcasts - hell, my best mate is somewhat overweight, but no1 gives two stuffs.

and then, there is fat, and then there is FAT. FAT people deserve to be made fun of - it's their fault.

    my biased, narrowminded, $0.02

If that fat person has been eating huge amounts of food then it is their own fault, surely? And if they're American they can start up some fat and proud club or something? Let's call it FAP.

yeah, I have noticed that when I was lower down my school (all-girl), the one seriously obese girl in my class was an outcast from all the social groups, while anorexic/non-Caucasian/geeks were getting along fine. very sad, considering we were all meant to be intelligent.

(in the end we made friends because I was too geeky and skinny for certain people in my class)

now in Y12, everyone's friends. there's no sizeism anywhere at all suppose we've all grown up!

these days though, PC does get a little over the top. I think most people, 85% or so, are not remotely racist, sizeist, sexist, whateverist: although in some parts of the UK the situation is terrible, mostly we are pretty open-minded.

of course with the exception of the pissed students down the local, who shout something at every "bird" who walks through the door, usually to do with her dress size

From what I know from friends who live up North or the East midlands, Nottingham is a tolerant city.
A lot of my mates have remarked about how people in the north are a lot more narrow minded than people in the south. Many of them think it is because there are very small black/asian populations in the north compared to the south.

While calling anyone any names is very naughty , there is a difference.

Calling someone a name cos theyre black or summit is worse than callin someone a fat fucker simply because they cant do anything about it....You cant choose your skin colour so its unfair to be taunted because of it. Being fat is a choice, so is being in any social/religious group and those things are all fair game for insults.

Being fat isn't always a choice. My friend was on steroids after an operation and therefore put on loads of weight. But I do see what you are saying.

Also, is religion really a choice? If you are brought up a certain way to believe in a certain faith, up until the ages of maybe 13-20 (?) It's unlikely that you will question that.

Going back to the original point, I was thinking about crimes and how they are considered *worse* if they are racially motivated..so if two black men mugged me would that be seen as racially motivated? I wouldn't really care about the race, I would be bothered about the mugging itself.

There was this case in Birmingham a while ago-this mixed raced guy was covered in burns and said he had been set on fire by racists. This supposedly happened right next to my college and a lot of people were very nervous and worked up about it. A few weeks later the truth came out.. he had been trying to burn his car out for an insurance scam and had accidentally set fire to himself. Talk about Peter calling the wolf.

That was probably off the point. Never mind.

I hope everyone had a nice christmas and is suffering for it now!

you have a choice to be fat? <rofl>

so that's why some obese people get depression cuz they have the choice, but just don't take it? puh-lease, wake up

it's about genetics, some people are bound to have a somatotype that's more favourable than others... the thing is, would you go up to a sumo wrestler and call them a fat fucker? no - you respect them because they do something with their size

for those that are obese and just can't get it down - exercising and healthy eating don't work, then i have real sympathy. it takes a lot for them to accept it and turn it into an advantage. i won't ever say 'dieting' by the way - cuz it's bullshit and people on 'diets' need to be educated in nutrition

    anyway....

calling someone black, what's the problem? if you're describing someone, and you say they're black, and they are... problem? not at all. same with fat. if someone is fat, in your opinion, then say it.

medically and politically there will always be definitions to argue with. "that person isn't fat - he's just overweight". <yawn> whatever, it's all opinionated. if you think someone's fat - they they're fat.

the real problem lies in people who are narrowminded and use these things to abuse people. almost always they lack morals, education and basically any requirements for being classed as a top grade human being. if they want to call someone black, fat, gay etc as an insult, then really you should be laughing at them and not rising to their insults.

fat people dont stand up for themselves i fee, because they get weak and view themselves as lesser beings (generally) cuz they start to believe the abuse.

someone calls you fat... ok, accept it. then tell them what they are - below u. uneducated. a dirty piece of shit that is a strain on the economy etc etc

i always stick up for my mates who are fat - it's good fun. im not fat myself, im just short. people seem to get surprised when you stick up for someone that isn't like yourself... try it sometime

Yes being fat is a choice. Of course exceptions are made for medical conditions such as KT mentioned.

KT, your mugging example wouldnt be racist unless it was clear that they attacked you because of your race. Of course, in this country, if those positions were reversed and it was 2 white guys mugging a black guy then it would automatically be classed as a racist attack.

    Master,

Sorry but 'genetics' is just an excuse made up by fat people to explain away their problems. Any normal person can be slim if they work at it, anyone who says differently is sadly deluding themselves.

Youre right on the colour thing. Calling someone black as a descriptive thing is no problem but its when you start using it simply as an insult. The intent is the problem.

PS< before anyone thinks im talkin shit...I weighed in at around 18 stones from age 14-17 so I know what im talking about.

my best friend is Indian-Yemenese and once I found myself talking to her mum (who doesn't speak great English and I have to concentrate sooo hard when speaking to her!) about another friend who happens to be a very dark-skinned Yemenese. unconsciously I said "yeah, he's black, he's from Yemen . . . " and stopped when I saw her face - she was obviously trying to process what I had just said, and had got caught up on the word "black"! her expression was terrible, I was so scared that I'd just mortally offended her, because she happens to be the Yemenese half of the couple and she thought I described her as black to other people! it was okay in the end though.

I agree, it is daft that we can't describe people as white/black/purple or whatever. calling someone fat is a bit more of an issue though, since in the UK's dominant culture being fat is not usually considered good.

As a person who has suffered from depression, I used to comfort eat to help me deal with my feelings and as a result, I became overweight. Are you ging to tell me that it was my fault I had depression and didn't know any other way of coping?

A lot of overweight people have problems and eating is how they cope. Do you think that by making their problems worse...by picking on them, that somehow they'll realise that they're being stupid and it's their fault they're so overweight?

you are talking shit, i don't "think", i *know*. let me explain.

genetical build up is different for each person, hence we get somatotypes. if it was possible for all people to be whatever they wanted, you wouldn't get people depressed over their weight. some people make a lot of effort to lose weight but simply, due to their genetical code that conscripts their metabolism, cannot lose more than x amount of weight

you're american, right? you should know - your country has the biggest problem in the world with obesity. a lot of people could lose more weight if they adjusted their lifestyle, but for some it isnt possible

just because you lost a lot of weight doesn't make it a rule for everyone. you were a fat bastard then, lazy and had over-eaten and under-exercised. you don't win medals for losin a lot of weight that you could lose if you wanted to

btw - weight has lot of difference to shape, too. some people can be fat but not weigh as much as others. so for you to way tons when you're going through puberty then lose it after when you can condition your body and adapt to your hormones, isn't impressive. if you're still overweight and wana lose some more, then try it. some people just can't get below a certain figure no matter what they do

I don't think he is American-and anyway, the UK is quickly catching up with the US on obesity.

I am a little bit over my ideal weight at the moment and I know that's because I don't exercise as much as I used to when I played tennis. It's not fair though, some people are lazy bastards and still skinny! My boyfriend for example! So don't always say that someone is a lazy bastard just cos they are fat!! People have different metabolisms (?) and burn up fat at different rates.

    Liberty,

Yes, you made the choice to eat to deal with your depression. Sorry if that sounds harsh but its true.

    Master,

Maybe I should have said most then. There are very few people in this world that cannot lose weight if they put their mind to it. Ive met literally dozens and dozens of obese people and almost all of them at one point or another have put their weight down to their 'genetics' or their 'metabolism'. Incidentally most of those people have gone on to lose their weight when they put the work in.

Im not an American. If you look at my location you will see where im from.
just because you lost a lot of weight doesn't make it a rule for everyone. you were a fat bastard then, lazy and had over-eaten and under-exercised. you don't win medals for losin a lot of weight that you could lose if you wanted to

Not what I said...I said that was what happened to me so I have some experience in this matter.
some people just can't get below a certain figure no matter what they do

    Very few.

Careful, Balddog... you are espousing a concept DANGEROUSLY close to personal accountability and responsibility. How BARBARIC and REPREHENSIBLE of you lmfao!

I personally find it pathetic when I see teenagers who are in worse physical condition than I, due to their lethargy and lack of discipline. Yeah, I am past fifty years old, and I weigh more than I did ten years ago... I was 6' tall, 190 lbs, and looked scrawny. I now weigh about 230 lbs., but then, my thyroid quit about that same ten years ago...

Oh, btw... sustained over 100 fractures during my 15 yrs of racing motorcycles, hitting the pavement 19 times at over 100 mph. Twelve concussions; two comas. A "little" physical abuse along the way... Was wounded twice in combat. Also, gunshot wound when I was 17 yrs old...

There are choices along the way, and for MOST, what they are is what they chose to be. Richard Bach espouses that theory in his book "Illusions": if you look in the mirror, and do not like what you see, the responsibility lies within the person you see there... If you are a couch-potato, and have the figure of that potato, well, it ain't nobody elses fault...

Reality ain't no fun, is it? Delusions are ever so more delicious!

first off, the whole racist thing, F*CK it! My roomate refers to me as Blanco and I call him a Negro. And you know what if you think about it, you just laugh when people think your horrable. All we are doing is calling each other white & black in spanish instead of english. Somehow the dumbf^cks in this world thing that negro is a bad word. This is just stupid.

Now on to the fat thing. OK I'm going to admit something to you all. from the age of 6 to 18 I lived with my mother and she tried her hardest to sheepify me. At 17 I was a 265lb 5'9" lardass. I had a 43" waist and manboobs. But I said after only having one girlfriend in highschool, "F^ck this sh!t I'm going to get in shape!".

In 6 weeks I lost 60 lbs and 8 inchs off my waist. I still wasn't a god but I was in much better shape and had a great senior year (last year before university or military, trade school, ect)

I joined the US Marine Corps and now I'm 185 lbs and have a 33" waist.

It isn't impossable but it takes a lot more mental strenght than most people are able to withstand. It is a matter of ignorance and mental weakness. I probably wouldn't be in as good of shape as I am if it weren't for the Marines but I lost a lot of fat on my own.

besides the few exceptions of real health problems, your only excuse is you haven't taken the time and energy to learn how to treat your body.

On a lighter note, if you feel you are looked down on cuz your not white, you can change that, just look to Michael Jackson. Just don't @ssrape young boys

So Thanatos jr, pray tell how you lost 10 pounds a week for 6 weeks without cutting off limbs, as I am sure there are a few of us out here that need to know.
Oh, and are you saying that fat people, anorexic people, and anyone with problems that, in your eyes can be sorted by just doing one simple thing are the same, then I pity you.
But all things aside, please tell me how to loose such weight in such a short time in a health manner.

snoop...try the beat diet...they are filling, tasty and have no food value of any consequence...fill up on them when you're hungry...they'll make your urin red and your feces will look the same...but you aren't adding calories or fat...personally, I like the pickled ones in wine vinegar...!

Think thin! Inside every fat lady is a lovely thin lady just waiting to be found by the right partner (wasn't that ever so politically correct of me? No gender involved, etc.?).

Consider the consequences...Afganistan...don't see any faties under those burqas...course who can really tell...they are all starving! Unfortunately starving women really have a bitchy attitude, get down right cranky...try my method, fill up on beets...you'll bloody love it!

I seriously recommend that no-one does this. yes the bulk will help stop you feeling hungry, but this is essentially a carbohydrate+fiber diet

Don't even start a diet from the internet without consulting a dietician/doctor.

Actually he suffers from a rare skin disorder meaning he has little pigmentation in his skin. Kind of like being Albino. Why do you think he has no colour at all in his face?

The skin disorder left his face all blotchy, but mostly white, so he made the decision to have plastic surgery, and he was advised that the operation would be more successful if he was made white as the doctors had more to work with.

At the risk of being accused of having had a sense of humour bypass, I'd just like to point out that diets such as this one are very dangerous and not recommended.

Oooooohh I LOVE this thread. However liberal and peaceloving I like to think I am, I still think Fat People only have themselves to blame for their size.
Is that horrible? I just think that everyone must be aware that too much food coupled with no exercise results in Obesity and if you're not prepared to do something about the problem than stop moaning.
Good for Geri Halliwell - at least she did something about her fitness - anyone can do it. it just takes sensible eating and exercise.

If there were fewer overweight people around, there'd be more room in town during the sales!
