Zzzz. Honestly, Toadie, it's been done before. I'm sure you must have been here when we've discussed the royal family....

Anyway, with regards finances: you're right, I haven't done any economic analysis of the royal accounts, but it is universally agreed that they are cost-effective.

Baldy's got a link to the report, if you really don't believe me...

Hey if your bored don't bother, that report was bullshit, it was simply talking in terms of the basic costs not the more complex issues of oppurtunity cost and the benefits that could be reaped from better use of the royals assets....

By the way did you see the Mirror yesterday, apparently some of the monarchs billion pounds (imagine what use that could be for the economy.....) was earned from the money left by WW1 soldiers that had no will

It would also appear that the govts efforts to treat them like normal people has gone out of the window seeing as the Queen Mums will has no inheritance tax, what justifies that precisely?

Toadborg why do you live in this country ?

You seem to have little or no national pride, you seem to dislike everything which makes us unique.

I think you'd like a bog standard, run of the mill country

OK, maybe it wasn't that recently, but the issue does come up regularly...

That's not a fair critcism. Just because he doesn't support the Monarchy doesn't mean that he doesn't have pride in his country (and that's without reminding you that our next king is half Greek FFS). It just means that he doesn't support a system which promotes divinity over the wishes of 'the people'.

Personally, I think that the monarchy is an anacronism, but until someone can find something better I support them.

Thankyou MoK
dislike everything which makes us unique.
I love this country because I was born here, it is obviously better then many other countries because of our economic situation but I really don't think that there is anything "unique" about our country in any meaningful way....

I didn't start this thread and you responded to it before me Kentish so I don't know what your on about

What i find objectionable is the fact the national anthem - which being at school, i am forced to sing - is "God Save The Queen", when i clearly believe in neither.

Forced? I'm assuming schools in Scotland aren't that barbaric. Surely?

If you don't want to sing it, don't .

But even if you don't believe in God, or think that we should have a queen, it is still our national anthem.

What "rules of society" are these then? Yes the queen does do charity work but her constitutional role is (in my opinion) the reason for her existence, and the reason we pay her. She has weekly meetings with her Prime Minister, she has to give royal asssent to every new law and she takes part in the state opening of parliment. Lets not forget she is also head of the armed forces.

You can argue about money all you like, but in the end, the queen is there for a reason: to be head of state. As such she has a great deal of responsibility. You could argue that an elected head of state would be in some way better, but I don't believe it would. The queen is not tied to any political party or views. This means she provides stability to the country and ensures that all elected MPs and ministers are accountable. Don't forget the last time we went without a monarch we ended up with a crackpot puritan dictator running the country. Yes I realise Charles I wasn't a good king, either, but with today's system it couldn't happen. There are three parts to the government, the house of commons, the house of lords and the monarch. They are all accountable to each other and this means no-one can get away with extreme policies. I think this is a very good system and I don't feel the need to change it.

not "rules" but rather the idea that you have to work to get anywhere in life, the monarchy goes aginst these values......

I dont like the royal family

The reason the Queen is the Queen is due to the fact that she was born in that family. We are suppose to live in a country which is democratic and here we are having a woman who's only qualification for the job is that she was born in the right family. It is i think wrong to have someone as our head of state who is not elected by the public.

I say we have revolution right now and that u should elect me as the president. Where i would syphon of loads of money into a swiss bank account

What the fuck is the point in the royals in our modern society? All they fucking do is wave.

Also why were so many people grieving at the death of the Queen Mother? What did she ever do for them? Did she help them? Did she provide them with money? Or did they just simply see her wave on TV?

Also I hate the way those "loyalist" bastards in Northen Ireland follow them, pretending to want to be part of Britain when the people living here don't even follow her anymore.

F.T.Q.!!!!!

The Queen is just a figurehead perhaps, but a good one who draws in tourists from all over the world. The buildings aren't the only attraction - the trooping of the colour, changing of the guard, Jubilee all bring the crowds in. They wouldn't exist without the Royal family.
Scotland have had guards for the past 400 years, with a monarch who doesn't really belong to us. People have not stopped visiting Edinburgh castle just because no monarchs live there.
(however i've just been told that they were scrapped earlier this year... ah well)
Its easy to say "Get rid of the Monarchy", but what would you replace it with? More elections that no-one cares about? If 40% of the population cannot even be bothered to vote in a General Election, why would a Presidential election be any different?
w0rd. However, we could just ditch the monarchy, and not have a president either. How about having our PM as our leader? Oh, we don't like him either....
The Beckhams are a stage above the royals, they earn their money through a wage dictated by the capitalist labour market. The royals are a product of the old feudal landed elite, they are an affront to modern civilization........
w0rd... except I couldn't have expressed it so eloquently.
What i find objectionable is the fact the national anthem - which being at school, i am forced to sing - is "God Save The Queen", when i clearly believe in neither.
Living in Scotland all my life, i have never felt that the queen is my monarch. *shrugs* However I'm one of those Scottish nationalists......
Since 1997 Labour has created the devolved Scottish and Welsh assemblies
haha!!! with no power whatsoever!!! They just mirror laws made in London! *giggles*

Personally, I feel that the Royal family, do the job to the best of their abilities. They have to. BUT... I don't like the idea of a monarchy. it's not a fair system.

Let us not 'diss' the Queen Mother. Firstly it's rude to speak ill of the dead. Secondly, the queen mother did not want to be queen. She didn't want to be married to a monarch, and it was only through Edward's abdication that her husband became King. Considering that she did not expect to be monarch, and probably would not have married George if she had known he would be King, I think she did pretty damn well.

I thought we were talking about the Queen?

Also, are we not allowed to express an opinion of someone if they are dead, because the opinion is bad? Seems pretty opressive to me...

We were originally talking about the Queen, but you brought up the issue of the Queen Mother's death, and so many people being at her funeral.

Did anyone else see Queen and country on BBC1 last night. Banishing the myth that the queen doesn't work for a living the program showed she in fact works bloody hard, with boxes of papers to read and sign every day, weekly meetings with the PM and regular Privy Council meetings. Anyone who thought she was a drain on the taxpayer should think again.

So her 'work' is a) reading documents b) signing the afforementioned documents and c) going to meetings, pretty exhausting!

Why does this justify having palaces, servants and millions of squid to libe one of the most luxurious lifestyles imaginable?

I was gonna say that. Just because she does a lot of stuff, doesn't mean that she deserves 7.9 million a year.

Why does knocking a silly football around a pitch deserve £100, 000 per week?

And daft haircuts. At least Her Majesty has a decent hairdresser.

Get some perspective.

I've said this before, if you are goping to complain about footballers then you are saying basically that capitalism is wrong and doesn't work.....

The Queen is a stage below capitalism, Beckham for example had to work to get to where he is the Queen just gets it for being born into the right family and that is wrong.......

That was my thought. Beckham and the Queen are in slightly different leagues. (dodgiest pun ever). Beckham, theoretically, worked to get where he is, and he gets his money from the people who want to watch him (Ticket sales supporting the club...). The Queen gets her money from everyone, whether they like it or not.
