Once again, Thanatos shows us how to be a professional soldier. Bollocks

but you exemplify military discipline. again bollocks & DJP get your head out of his arse

Those that boast how many they've killed and how good they are usually the ones who turn out to be the bullshitter's.

    Go book Thanatos.

I did imagine that this might happen.

If you can explain to me just one good reason why I should be sucking up to Thanatos, please?

I'd be very interested to hear the options for that! He's in the US, I'm in the UK. In no way will he influence my life.

The guy has my respect. To be honest, I'm not fussed if you disagree, you're entitled to your opinion, by all means. That's why this thing called democracy, that people like Thanatos fight and shed blood to protect, is so valuable.

    Mobile Phone Shootings Shock Britain
    By ED JOHNSON

LONDON (AP) - In a country where most police are armed with little more than batons and the closest many people get to crime is a TV drama, criminals with guns have been seen as the kind of problem that afflicts other nations.

But a surge of murders, robberies and assaults involving guns in London, including the mugging of a teen-age girl who was shot in the head for a mobile phone, has shaken Britain's traditional attitude that guns are other peoples' problems.

According to figures released by the London police, muggings involving a firearm have risen by 53 percent, from 435 during the six months ending November 2000 to 667 during the same period last year.

The number of murders with a gun in London jumped by 90 percent during the same time, from 16 to 30. That's a far cry from the 640 murders - many gun-related - in New York alone last year, but that figure is way down from the peak of 2,262 in 1992.

Street crime in Britain's capital has also skyrocketed in recent months, with 19,248 robberies reported between September and November 2001, up more than 100 percent from the 8,614 robberies during the same period the previous year.

Much of the crime wave involves a massive rise in the theft of mobile phones. Government figures show that more than 700,000 mobile phones were stolen last year.

Police insist gun violence is largely confined to disputes between criminal gangs and drug dealers.

But an incident on New Year's Day, in which the 19-year-old girl was shot in the head even though she had given up her phone, has raised fear that violence is spilling over into mainstream society.

Three days earlier, a 10-year-old boy was held at gunpoint for a mobile phone and 25 pounds cash ($36) in southeast London.

``Is anyone safe in Britain in 2002?'' asked a front-page headline of the Daily Express, as it reported the mobile phone attack.

The Daily Telegraph said people were worried violence is spiraling out of control in Britain. ``Police fear a new crime explosion as school-age muggers graduate to guns,'' it said.

Despite police and government claims that crime is falling nationally, many Londoners are frightened.

``The shooting of this young woman is off the scale of comprehension,'' said Nigel Whiskin of the charity Crime Concern, which provides advice and help to professional and voluntary agencies working to reduce crime and the fear of crime.

``Quite a large number of people will be very worried about their own personal safety and the safety of their kids. It is very demoralizing for us as a community,'' he added.

For Charlotte Clarke, a 28-year-old worker for a department store, the shooting was a sign that violence is escalating.

``From a knife to a gun, it's just a step up,'' said Clarke, who moved from south London to a more fashionable area in the north of the city she thought would be safer.

``I wanted to get away from the violence and the crime, but 18 months down the line there have been stabbings, a mugging right outside my door, friends have had their purses taken and credit cards stolen,'' she added.

Hand guns were outlawed in Britain in 1997 after the massacre of 16 children and a teacher at a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland. Some 160,000 handguns were surrendered to police.

Dave Rodgers, vice chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said the ban made little difference to the number of guns in the hands of criminals. According to a recent survey, the number of crimes in which a handgun was reported increased nationally from 2,648 in 1997-98 to 3,685 in 1999-2000.

``The underground supply of guns does not seem to have dried up at all,'' he said.

Professor John Benyon, a criminologist at Leicester University, said that although Britain is still a ``relatively low gun-use society,'' there is a public perception that ``we are moving closer toward the problems that America has.''

``People are increasingly concerned that we are losing the fight against armed crime,'' he said.

Especially at this moment, I gotta stand up to attention and salute to Thenatos and DJP for expressing his respect. I share it with him.

With regards to the AP article: again, it clearly demonstrates difference and "equality-gap" between criminals and modest people.

No I don't think that even if guns were legal in the UK, murdered 19 years old girl would be carrying one. But some still do not see that those bloody jerks running around your streets without fear of being put to risk that somebody who they will go after might just retaliate or stop them with the equal force: 9mm or .45.

What else do you want to hear? Perhaps somebody armed knocking on your door at night....?

    Thanatos,

This question isn't meant to be sarcastic or at all disrespectful, so please don't take it like that. How do you manage to stay 'aggressive' but not 'angry,' if that makes sense? It's a question I'm genuinely interested in the answer to, because I recognise that one's an advantage (perhaps even a prerequisite for victory) in a fight, whereas the other is a definite handicap.

Let me add my respects to those already given. I do respect your military service, as I think I've said before. It may not be all that obvious much of the time, beacuse (a) I play Devil's Advocate a lot of the time anyway, and (b) there are few people on this Earth whom I exempt from questioning, even if I do respect them.

    'aggressive' but not 'angry

excuse me for stepping in, it actually made me think a bit (yes!) about my own agressivity vs anger.

Although I haven't been in "real" war like thenatos and only participated in few unfamous peace-keeping and peace-making military missions, I think I'm well aware of the point which thenatos is making here.

Anger is mostly having opposite effect to what you would expect: it makes you more vulnerable.
Any primmed emotions are not good when you face situation where staying calm and sharp on the same time may save your and others life.

Therefore being agressive but not being angry not only makes sense, but IMO is the key to survive under conditions that most of the people knows just from TV and books.

Thenetos, Thenatatoes, tamatotoes, thats what you get for claiming Greek God like status.

On the anger issue-I`ve seen a majority of soldiers that have been on the recieving end of loud noises have a scary calm before the storm attitude. It`s un nerving and to a point a gooddefensive tactic.
I also have been on the recieving end of loud noises and I am still an aggressive fueled by anger kinda guy. I have a goodly amount of mexican blood running thru me and I have given up trying to stop it.
Actually I shut down and run on auto pilot. My memory of events that happened while I was in the anger zone are sketchy at best.
I think it was an unconscious defensivive move that was allowed to slip out in high school were my fighting style became well rehearsed. (Politicaly correct people in charge of Southern Californian schools; I have an idea, we`ll bus the black, mexican, asian, armenian, turks and jews into white suburbia. They will interact nicely and teach each other social skills. The blacks will benefit from the white people that bought a house for a good school system and the whites will learn how to fight multiple opponents at one time" <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0"> Oh joy! Thanks politicaly correct people for giving new breath to the gangs of L.A.
Gangs here used to be chains and baseball bats, you know, broken ribs, kneecaps.
Since intregrated busing started the asians stepped in with MP5`s and Uzi`s and the rest followed suit, MP5 and Uzi`s are now mainly in the hands of collectors and the gangs are using AK and SKS`. It`s evolution, baby.
    I collect

Tricky, I must be part mexican...I have a vicious violent temper which flashes and leaves as rapidly...dang, didn't know that!

    On old saying:

"Those whom the gods would destroy they first make mad!"

We all get angry, best get over it before you get into a fight...works for me! Cool heads usually prevail in combat...just be mean enough to win!

Thanks, Thanatos - I appreciate the time you took even if the evil spawn of Gates destroyed it.

In fact, to all who've posted on "anger vs. aggression", I understand how essential it is to stay cool... I just wish I were better at doing it. That said, I don't think I'll ever think myself wrong for going into a cold fury at the thought of a lady being raped...
