So why is it 'an historian' then, Ms. Grammar Expert :p?

Well, I would write and say 'a historian' :p

    So would the Guardian: see?

You and the Guardian are both incorrect :p.

It is 'an historian'. Though I would also say 'a historian' because it sounds wrong otherwise.

I maintain that it all comes down to "what sounds right" in the end. ;)

According to a more in depth invesigation it is either! While 'an historian' is technically incorrect, it is widely accepted, and has a history of being used in English since the 1800s.

Oh what fun we are having here :p

And Herb is an old fella ;)

I think "H" was created just to reinforce the hatred between the brits and americans. The only time you say H is when it is silent in the American-English pronounciation and vice versa. :p

It looks like a bit of an evil laugh, doesn't it? Or maybe a snooty one, with your head thrown back. :p
