UK's first hybrid embryos created

Disgusting, in my opinion.

They're not going to turn into anything though.

If they escape from the lab they could turn into mods or imigrants!

A great day for science and for humanity IMO, and one which will eventually lead to end the suffering of millions of people.

Let's hope those who see this as morally wrong- and they are perfectly entitled to that opinion- don't try to stop or block others from continuing with this work.

Oh FFS, a bundle of cells which are "alive" for a maximum of 14 days.

    Fucking "embryo" my arse.

I understand all sides of the argument but I just think this is one step too far. I personally think the government needs to draw a firmer line on playing with - what I believe to be - life.

You'd think they were talking about grafting the head of a cow onto the body of a human

A friend of mine works in research, specialising in motor neuronal degeneration and her teams research can move on in leaps and bounds with this. Those against it can obviously choose not to benefit from any advances made

Totally agree. Who wants to wager a bet that this will be a failure?

It's the very fact that they are being mixed at all that is so repugnant.

We all want to end the suffering of people with diseases, but there's nothing to actually suggest that this will eventually lead to the end of the suffering of millions. What's more, correct me if i'm wrong, but it's possible to get stem cells from adults and from umbilical cords isn't it? Lets hope that MPs vote to end this.

Except they're not just any 'bundle of cells' are they? They're quite special these ones, being the beginnings of human life and all.

Its not that disgusting really. It would have happened sooner or later. Something bad may come of it yes, but, lots good could come of it too. I think finding treatments for illness is definatly a worthy cause.

Where is the line drawn for the beginnings of human life? Let's not go down the churches route of no masturbation, please.

EDIT: Also, alot of animals just don't get human diseases. That's the train of thought behind them 'ending the suffering of millions'. The point of experiments is to uh, experiment. Too see if theories are correct. Should we stop all experiments incase they fail?

What does the Church's views on masturbation have to do with it?

Sperm is (one of) the beginnings of human life.

I think this is brilliant news. Hopefully soon, more diseases can be cured with such research. Anyone who opposes it should be refused treatment coming from this research, IMHO.

All cells are 'life' so why are human cells more precious than any other cell? They're destroyed after a few days, they never become anything more than cells. I don't see the problem.

being the beginnings of human life and all.

I don't see how anyone can claim that inserting a bit of DNA from a human SKIN CELL into a cow egg is the beginning of human life. They aren't even using human eggs or anything from a human embryo. Perhaps everyone up in arms about these 'animal-human hybrid embryos' should be thinking twice next time they exfoliate.

And wasn't it a similar thing when they grew that ear on the back of a mouse?

No, the whole hybrid thing is a bit of a red herring - basically they take animal eggs, then remove the nucleus, then add a human nucleus.

Apart from mitocondrial DNA there's effectively nothing of the animal left after a few cell divisions.

What is does mean is you aren't discarding half a potential human being to grow stem cells.

Personally, I would object to this if it was being used as a fertility treatment, but for research and production of stem cells to treat medical condtions in existing humans, I'm very happy.

    excellent news.

some people say children are the future...i say its stem cell research and hybrid embryos!

hopefully this could be the start of something special.

    Definitely good news.

If we continue to do this research here we can better control it and take the economic and knowledge benefits. But if we ban it then it will just move to South Korea and they will get the positives.

I have heard there is plenty to suggest there will actually be many, previously unheard of breakthroughs on countless areas of medicine. Most scientists in the field regard this as extremely important.

Embryonic stem cell therapy is all potential and no substance at the moment. Other than diseases where the stem cells aren't already present (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's) it's probably still better to use autogenic/adult stem cells and we've being doing so for years to treat Leukaemia etc.

This is a pretty minor, but positive, step in the grand scheme of things.

Aye you're right, I misread it.

Though I still think the mixing of any human cells with cow eggs to create this sort of hybrid is wrong.

Hybrid cells. Not like we're going to have griffins and centaurs running around.

There's a speech that Sam Harris - i think it was him - gave about the religious opposition to Stem Cell Research, in which he debunks the argument about the preservation of anything that has the potential for life. He cites that with the current state of technological advancement every time you scratch your nose you're committing a holocaust of potential lives.
