What should we do with all the old people?

As some of you may have seen aparently some 3/4 of a million old people arent getting proper care because councils have been getting more and strict about the care they give out.
My question is, given the number of old people we have, and the ratio of worker to old person is going down - what should we do with them all?
It seems we just cant afford to give all the care we want, so should we ration it? Or should we just take whatever assets the old people have to pay for it?
Personally I think its going to have to come down to councils and the government taking possession of their homes to pay for the rising costs, its a nasty option, but I cant think of any other way.

I love my parents, I really do. But I don't think I can live with them again.
But its a great idea in theory
I agree
My grandma and grandad are unable to function and run a house by themselves now so my mum has cut work hours down and helps them. If one passed away, the other would definatly come and life with us. Would drive us all batty and up the wall but wouldn't think twice about doing it.
Same as my mum, hate her to high heaven sometimes, but if she was in need of care, I would be straight there.
Same goes for any member of my family, we would all care for the other before sticking them in some home.
Obviously, not practical though!
Though we need to up the age...

Crap shit.
Excellent idea, except I think we've come to treasure the idea of independence too much unfortunately. I think this occurs on the continent to some extent, though I can't confirm that.
:eek2:
Great, except of course its totally impractical, there isnt the housing to do it and many people dont have families like this.
We need to take old peoples money, its either that or they will soak up all the government funding for the whole country.
Seriously though, I don't know what to do about this. We need more young people, simple as that. It's only a matter of time before we have a government minister urging people to have more babies, and therefore, more sex. That, or we allow young people to come and live here.
I personally have nothing against immigrants coming to the country - but there simply isn't room for everyone. We're already the most densely populated country in Europe as it is. These immigrants would need houses, hospitals, schools and the like. These will take time to build. It would be worth the money in the long run, but it'll still take a while to make them. If the resources are there which allow more people to live here, fine - bring more in.
And this has nothing to do with right or left, just my feeling that the average Brit doesnt like 'those people from over there'. You only have to look at the way Multiculturalism is discussed to prove that.
And I wouldnt consider myself a Leftie, whatever you think that might mean, I'm more of a liberal (as in the kind of person who wouldnt allow torture).
Maybe because at least 75% of the press is, and virtually anyone who phones into radio shows definitely is.
And we're all multicultural and have been for ages, its preposterous to suggest otherwise. Not only have we have numerous religions for a long time, but also we've had all sorts of immigrants pretty much since we became an island.
And even aside from that, what the hell do we actually mean by 'culture' anyway? Shared values - well thats not true. Shared interests - thats not true either. Shared history - that doesnt apply.
No, but it all goes into the broader picture doesnt it, hundreds of thousands of people buy the Mail every day. Alarming numbers of people cite immigration as they key issue in elections...etc.
I've yet to meet anyone who reads The Independent.
Again you're making massive assumptions about me - I sometimes find you very strange SG.
Of course they dont know how many illegal immigrants are here, surely if they could get accurate stats on them they wouldnt be here anymore. Its like trying to find out how many people use drugs - by the very nature of their position illegal immigrants dont fill in the census forms.
It may well be that many, but then huge numbers seem to be leaving to.
I'm sure you will dismiss this because I'm some sort of socialist (which I'm not) but I just think people are getting far too worked up about what is effectively a non issue. Granted in some areas there have been problems, and the asylum system does need to be made more effective but its not a pressing issue in most peoples lives. So when I see it being made such a fuss of I can only assume that it is because of other reasons - and you hear the old 'errosion of our british culture' line.
There wasnt ever a uniform 'British Culture' there were certain cultural norms, which are largely still there, but to suggest that we at some mythical time all shared one culture is just rubbish.
It may seem nice at first to just take a long holiday but after a couple of months I think you would get totally bored.
And the maths of it are just plain daft, you work for 40 years and then expect the State to look after you for 20 after that - It can possibly be made to work.
Opium is the ideal drug for old people who are getting realy past it difficult and expensive to look after.
It's cheap little need for expensive industrial drugs.
