and third in Europe overall. :yippe:

Full Story

A survey showed Newcastle was in the top three cities in Europe when residents were asked their satisfaction with a range of issues such as employment, schools, housing and health services compared with residents in other major European cities.

I know im biased because I live in the city, but I do think Newcastle is a quality city. Great city for shopping and socialising then just 20/30 minutes on the Metro and your at the beach. :hyper:

What about your city or town ? Do you rate it or think somethings could be improved?

The best in Europe? More like the best city in North East England with a population of more than 200,000. :chin:

Everything is a bit shit round here, we have the basics but that's about it. I have to move, how's Newcastle this time of year?

Having been in some others, I'd say Athens is among the ugliest big cities in Europe, if not THE ugliest. There are nice parts of course, I mean as a whole.

My town was voted one of the worst in the country a while back. I must agree, it's pretty shit and there's not much here. Notts city is really good though.

I was going to say, Nottingham is a beautiful city, infact it seems almost every city seems to be better than Sheffield at the moment.

I love Manchester :D And I think it's getting better and better. So much has been redeveloped in the past 10years since the lovely IRA bombed us :p There's always stuff going on too.

I've been to Newcastle and I thought it was really nice! That main road down to the Quayside with the old posh houses was really pretty but there wasn't much at the Quayside though.. And I was only there for 2 days but I saw 2 fights

I have to say I'm surprised it's 3rd in Europe.. how was this thing voted? Surely Paris, Barcelona, Rome, London etc have got to be up there.

You must have been in the posh end if you only saw two fights :p

Oh I agree, London, Barcelona and Madrid are great European cities. And I dont think Newcastle is better than London. However this is based on the views of residents. You have to remeber London, Madrid & Paris are very expensive to live in and often extremley congested. The poll is based on quality of life rather than having the most shops or pubs. People in Newcastle seemed most satisfied with schools, hospitals, nightlife, clean air and travel etc...

Thats my take on things anyway. :thumb:

I love Brighton so much, because it's just so liberal and full of so many different kinds of people.
It's right on the seafront, with a wicked pier and a really nice beach that's always jammed pack in the summer, and even at night because Brighton's club strip is along the seafront. It's just got such a wicked atmosphere at night, I love the clubs and bars, and in the day it's great for shopping - we have the lanes which have a really studenty/hippy vibe and a kind of continental feel.

London is the next nearest city to me, and it speaks for itself really. Quality place, massive and full of everything basically. lol. I always go to some fucking brilliant raves in London.

As for Europe? I'd say my top 3 cities would be Amsterdam, Munich and London.

I hope to be able to big up Southampton when I start living there for 3 years, next year.:thumb:

Yep, I'd shoot myself if I had to live in London to be honest. Just seems like a vaccous hole to me.

Yeah, in a way your right. London may have loads of good clubs, shops etc but on the downside the health service, house prices, local schools and public transport all reduce your quality of life in the city.

The quest for Europes best city isnt likely to be a major capital like London or Paris, its more likely to be a city that can offer the right combination of shops, bars and attractions yet still provide good healthcare, schooling and public transport.

I hate big cities especially Paris. But I did love Berlin! The problem is all the bloody crime though!

Yeah Berlin is ace, although I preferred Munich due to it being in Bavaria and close to the Alps and Austria...

As someone who's never been travelling in Europe before, and someone who hasn't been to Newcastle before, I couldn't comment on this. Mind you, just about anywhere compares favourably to the North West of Wales. I absolutely hate it here. If you're a holiday-maker who enjoys peace and quiet in the countryside, this is the area for you. If you're trying to carve out a career, go elsewhere - anywhere else.

Although in many ways I'm dreading starting university, I must admit I'm looking forward to living in Manchester. I've visited the city a couple of times and have been impressed. The city centre is pleasant enough, the air is relatively clean for such a large city, and Mancunians themselves seem a friendly bunch. I've yet to meet one I've not got on with, or disliked. (if, of course, you exclude one or two I've spoken to here) :p

It is cool as fuck, was very close to moving there a couple of months back. Pricey though!

Aberdeen is an amazing city. Miserable weather, miserable people, grey buildings, more than likely to be shat on by a scurry on any given day, underacheiving football team, just about the worst (and coldest) bus station outside the third world etc etc etc.

I must have done something really fucked up in a previous life :grump:

Newcastle is a wonderful city, but I'm not sure that it is that good. I'm fairly sure that cities like Salzburg and Munich are better.

I think Newcastle is the best city in the UK, though, with Manchester a fairly close second.

I dont know about Newcastle but, the town in which I live is shite, no jobs, no entertainment, no decent nightlife, nothing exciting at all. Its full of chavs and i dont like walking around at night on my own. Also apart from the train into London it has really bad transport links. To get anywhere you have to go through London first. Im glad im leaving for what should be for good next month. :yippe:

Wolverhampton (which is not my home town, I hasten to add, I just live here for the time being) is awful. At least I save money because there is nowhere to go.

Never been to Newcastle but heard many good things about it. It's small for a city though isn't it?

The city itself is fairly small, about 175,000 people live here, but the surrounding area is masssive, and the population of Tyne and Wear is about 1.5 million.

The problem with living here is that Newcastle has the largest commuter population outside London, which means my council tax is higher to pay for all the fucking tourists. But as we've got a Lib Dem council, at least the tax is only going up at inflation.
