The only big cases of those were against the tobacco companies in the US because they persistantly lied about how dangerous smoking was.
As for warnings, they do seem to work, and given smoking is dangerous I cant see the big problem.
As for alcohol, warnings are a slight move in the right direction (a relatively pointless one I think) what would be far more effective is a ban on all alcohol advertising.
