Propaganda

Is Propaganda good, evil or just a tool?

Nice BBC documentary on propaganda from it's modern beginning in the teachings of Freud.

Very little bias that I can see, just a stright forward this is this, and that is that style. Leaves it up to you to decide what the tool is for.
( little each is an hour long )

Depends on the purpose. In the UK during WW2 it was used to motivate the people into working for the greater good, and to get across important messages like keeping your curtains closed and don't tell secrets to strangers e.t.c.

On the other side you've got the Russian and Nazi posters portraying the other side as child eating monsters e.t.c.

Erm.. Whowhere, aren't you talking about the same thing there. Sure some of the UK WW2 propaganda was positive messages but other aspects weren't.

But surely it depends what use it's for? Virtually every single thing said by any political party is propoganda (either attacking other's ideas or promoting their own). The anti-smoking labels on cigs is propoganda, so are the drink-driving adverts...

I can't believe anyone thinks that it's a good thing for a government to systematically hide information from us, and give us media that only shows what they want us to know. Not only is there an inherant lack of morals involved in a government that's elected to represent the people subsequently hiding information from them, but it has the knock on effect of nobody trusting said government. If the government tells you something, do you believe them? Judging by this forum, the answer is an unequivocal no.

Propaganda is a tool used by governemnts, all of them, all the time. Be it Posters, TV, Radio, Wars, new legislation, whatever.

It's ultimatley used to change the minds of individuals who aren't interested enough in politics to see right through it. Brainwashing - no less.

And we aren't likley to ever see the back of it until a vast majority start paying attention to the affairs of thier own country and wake up from thier mass media imposed slumber of ignorance, and stop watching Big Brother 902, Eastenders, and whatever else.

Mass Media is the new opiate of the masses now Religion is largley gone. And it's twice as evil.

You might want to check out the documentary - especially given how little governments use propoganda compared to other groups in society.
