A good place to start is by practicing self-awareness. That means paying attention to your emotions (e.g. what excites you? what scares you? where do you feel insecurity, and why?) and thoughts (e.g. what you love to do, what you dream of doing, and what kind of person you'd like to be). But it's also about recognising that who "we" are can depend on the situation (e.g. a friend, a student, a child), and what we're doing (e.g. competing in a sport vs having a chilled day).
I've given a quick summary, but I'd suggest having a search around for guides on how to approach this. It's a really powerful exercise, and you learn all sorts of things about yourself that you never knew
