What are you reading right now?

I've just finished Midnight Sun (it's Twilight but from Edward's perspective :p). For those that don't know I'm a massive hardcore full-time Twilight fan but I started this book in October and it took me aaaages to get through. I think because it's like 750 pages and the chapters are huge but I finished it yesterday! I then immediately went and watched Nosferatu and damn I gotta say I love a vampire :flushed:

Anyway I've just started The Impossible Life by Matt Haig who's my all time favourite author and guess what?? These chapters are like 1-3 pages long so I can fly through it !!

My goal is to read 15 books this year so I better get cracking - let me know what you've been reading I want recs :)

Omg I got my mum The Life Impossible by Matt Haig for Christmas actually *It was meant to be a suprise for her but she came Christmas shopping with me instead :astonished::scream: so it sadly wasnt a suprise but she loved it*. I don't think she read it yet but it looks very good actually and the fact it's set in Ibiza is awesome!. I love Ibiza so much and I normally go there on holiday. I think I might be reading that book too. Matt Haig is a brilliant author and his book the comfort book is fantastic!. Midnight Sun also sounds interesting too. I've never read the Twilight series to be fair, I think I've seen only parts of the film and one of the films when I was in secondary school actually because we had to study it as part of the media curriculum :joy:.

I got nearly the ACOTAR series to start reading apart from the two other books. I also got Iron Flame and some library books I got on neurodiversity specifically having autism as an adult as I want to better understand myself and my identity over the coming months (and it might be helpful for an apprenticeship that I might be doing <3:tongue: )

I'm reading Island by Aldous Huxley (the follow-up to his more famous book, Brave New World). It's about someone infiltrating a utopian society, but reads a little more like an extended essay on utopia and associated ideas about society. Goes nicely as a follow up to the earlier Brave New World, which was about a dystopian society with some similar themes, but that had more of a storyline.

Both books are dense and heavy reading, but are well-written and discuss some ideas well ahead of their time given how old they are (Brave New World is almost 100 years old, Island is closer to 70 years old). Would recommend giving both a read - they're great in their own right, but also are referenced quite a bit in the modern day so it's good to know what they're about!

I've got a target of 12 books for the year on Goodreads. Hopeful I'll hit it as I'm putting more importance on reading this year! :)

@Amy22 I'm loving The Life Impossible so far - I'm nearly halfway through it's such a quick and easy read I just love Matt's writing style so much! I hear so much about the ACOTAR series but I don't think I'd like it myself doesn't really sound like my thing  The books on neurodiversity sound interesting and I understand that feeling of wanting to understand yourself more - books are so good for helping with that!

@Azziman wow they both sound like hefty things to read. Bet the language is a lot to chew! Love Goodreads it's so handy to track

@struggling0_0 yeah I go through reading phases like in 2022 I somehow read 38 books??? I find I'm either all for reading or I don't have the concentration at all! The Cosy Cat Society sounds right up my alley let me know how you find it! I might have to give it a read :)

@Katie same!! in 2022 i also had my peak for reading haha, i somehow managed to read 47 books then things went a little downhill with reading haha last year my total was soooo big too, not lol i read 4 books last year!!! i either read for hours on end or re read the same page 10 billion times still not taking it in so give up haha

so far im looooving the cosy cat society and would already recommend it!!

i often read romance books (as cliche as it is i love a good love story) - although my goal for this year is to branch out a bit more into other genres.

i've also heard loads concerning ACOTAR but am undecided whether its for me - but i may give it ago and hopefully it is worth the hype.

and i'll definitely be checking back to this discussion thread for more book recs :3

I think I might go for smaller books this year. I added a bunch to my Goodreads want to read list but if anyone has any short novels recommendations let me know !

I think I want to read more this year. Well I says more but tbh I’ve only ever read one whole book & that was last week lol😂 actually, I read the Bible a few times & that’s brutal boring lol so I could probably read anything

I don’t really know what I like reading though and buying a few books to maybe not enjoy them seems like a waste 😂
  • KatieKatie Community Manager Posts: 215 Trailblazer
@Faolan haha what was the book you read?

Also I'm a big believer of not buying books brand new unless I can't find them anywhere. Highly recommend charity shops or there's a website called World of Books that sells second-hand books for much cheaper! Love looking in Waterstones but I very rarely buy from there (Amazon is usually cheaper!)

It's also super handy if you have friends or family who reads so you can do book swaps :) And if you start a book that you can't get into just put it down - no point wasting time trying to read it if you can't enjoy it. Maybe consider what films you like watching and if you'd like the same genre in books. Or just read a few blurbs and pick your fancy :sunglasses:

I read Daisy may coopers autobiography ‘Don’t laugh you’ll only encourage her’ . It was the only book I could find lol but I actually enjoyed it. She’s a funny yoke & it’s cute that people write their life story in a book lol

I wanna buy a proper story book though. I asked my uncle there if I’m allowed to read books and he said ya so I’ll buy some . I’ll get second hand bc I’m very picky . I never even considered that lol

Now this is my kind of thread! Thank you @Katie , I really enjoyed The Midnight library and will perhaps give Matt Haig another go.

@Azziman that sounds absolutely fascinating, and I'll add it to my book list! I really enjoyed Brave New World, and saw it as the more realistic dystopian threat to 1984. I also really enjoyed the doors of perception, one of the most trippy experiences I've had reading anything! The description is wonderful

@sinead276 I got ACOTAR for my partner and she really enjoyed the first book! I will steal it and let you know how it is--especially as I've just finished game of thrones and am mourning the loss of fantasy in my reading life.

I'm currently reading The Etymologicon by Mark Forsyth. It's about the various quirks and histories of the English language. My favourite chapter is on the many different names for butterflies in all of the world's languages. In Indonesian, it's rama rama, because they form a plural by duplicating the original word (rama being butterfly). In Italian it's Farfalle, which is where we name the pasta (which the Americans call bow-ties, ignoring the Italian name). And in Greek, the name for butterfly is psyche, and psyche was the goddess of the soul🦋

I'll have to have a read of that book. I got a few autobiographies mostly owned by my mum because she enjoys reading about other people's lives. I got Dave Grohl's autobiography for both of us one xmas and it's actually quite interesting.

And it's me again, I just started reading an online sample of that and wow, super good!. Speaking of novels that are on my list *long list of books I need to read but terribly procrasinate reading them*, I want the Dexter book series because omg Dexter is such a hyperfixation at the moment. Also, Dexter is a good tv show too which I need to watch and maybe get the boxset of. What I will say is that the show and the books can be quite dark and deals with a lot of subjects that may be triggering for some <3. *Thought I'd share this*.

Omg @Amy22 I didn't know there was a Dexter book series? Gosh I remember when I was in school racing home then laying in bed watching Dexter on my ipad mini  I don't think anything will beat the title sequence I always found it really satisfying

Omg the title sequence is absolutely amazing and perfect how they shot it too. Did you know that there's Dexter original sin tv show and there's going to be a Dexter resseruction show as well?. Im watching bits of Dexter on youtube lol. Yep there's a book series. Actually the book series by Jeff Lindsey inspired the tv show Dexter.
