    It can be difficult to stay in a conversation with someone who asks you a triggering question. You could say that you don't want to talk about it or just be vague with details and not go into depth. Another thing you can try is to ask them a question as lots of people like to talk about themselves. For example, if talking about family is difficult for you and someone asks what you are doing with family over the christmas holidays, you can give a brief answer and then ask them what they are doing so that the conversation moves onto them rather than focusing on you and a triggering topic.
